View Full Version : Installing Underbody Lights?

Ok, i got the colorstorm underbody kit + tons of other small lights.. I started installing the underbody lights today and i ran into a little snag.. i can't figure out how to mount the light bars in the front and back. Theres nowhere to screw into thats secure enough that they wont rattle or fall off after a few days. They are 18" sticks that mount in but a circle harness that wraps around the light and then it is screwed into the body of the car. there's just no place to mount them in front or rear!
Any suggestions?

use the circular harness with a zip tie instead of a screw, and make a hole in the exhaust heatshield where the lowest point bends, zip tie it tight and walla!

thats how mine is installed :)

for the front, just dremel out a small section of the plastic shield underneath.
if you look under there you should see a channel that goes all the way across it except for one piece that comes out in the way. take out that small section and you'll have a complete little channel to set the bar in.
and for my back bar i zip tied it to those things that come out from the bumper cover to the mounting points, held up just fine with no problems or worries of falling off.
what killed my kit was the dealership breaking the wires and giving me a check for twice what i paid for it and i got a brand new inferno kit from a group buy with $30 left over. :D

Thanks guys.. hey Eugin, I have TWO 18" light sticks that are SUPPOSED TO go in the back, will that method still work for 2 lights? The lighting should cover the whole back of the car.. and front.
I figured i could cut some of the front plastic piece out, i just wasnt sure how secure the lights would be.

I suggest not putting them on the exhaust heat shield...... one that thing will rattle over time..
I also attach then to the piece that come off the bumper and attach to those metal brackets... as shown in the picture.
Now for the front theres a notch in the middle of the plastic where those same tabs come back on the front bumper. The notch in the splash guard plastic has two notches you need to cut out to make the full bar fit all the way up in there.

So pretty much what i thought before.. to cut out the usless curves in the plastic under the front bumper? And what would be the best way to attach the lights to that rear metal bar?

thanx phil... would it be a good idea to have a few small pieces of dynamat between the light tube and heat shield to avoid rattling?

Its the heat shield that will come loose on most tc's... I know chads rattles and so does somone elses... And if you have a stock exhaust or a stock style I dont recommend placing it on the heat shield!!!!

I got the front done.. started off easy but it took me awhile to get the lights alligned.. (2 sticks)
so what do you suggest for the rear lights?? Since you say the heat shield will rattle... (i could still lay R-blox(dynamat) down under the light so it wouldn't rattle i guess..

I suggest putting it where I said to put it... same place I did the xb tonight same place I did the last 10 installs.

i wouldnt put them on the heat shield but zip tie them to the posts that attach the bumper cover to the frame.
i think me and _Keith_ both like that same spot cause i said it before too :p

So i suppose you need to make some extra holes to attach them to those posts right?.. alright, i'll figure it out tonight when i get home.. I'd like to see some pix of that though if you have any!

No... you just zip tie em on,,,,,, one zip tie around the light another that connects that zip tie to the supports.

^^^ yea, or for the extremely cheap just one big zip tie going around the lightbar and the support at once.

DOing it that way put stress on the glass not much but some by doing two loops the top loops gets nice and tight around the part on the car and means less movement.

yea it was more of a joke, and my lightbars were plastic & LEDs, i dont like the concept of glass tubes under the car like that.

Only thing I dont recommend from this pic is going through the plastic... go off the bumper support plastic that comes back and attaches to the splash guard.

I have some pics attached to a post in this thread as I installed a colorstorm light kit on my 07 tc. It isn't the cleanest install, but it was tricky trying to find a spot for the 2 18" sticks on the front and rear. I winded up being real creative with zip ties! lol. The little notches in the front splash guard worked for the right hand light, but the left hand one was harder to mount imo. On the sides I used the mounts it came with and the self tapping screws worked fine through the plastic. It isn't hooked up electrically yet, but will include more pics as they become available.
