View Full Version : So who actually races their Scion?

Lets get this forum going. There are several drivers in various series proving that Scions are a capable platform for racing. Just wondering who else races their car (and I'm NOT talking to the wannabe street-racers out there).

Even though I recently sold my Scion, while I owned it I was very active in racing. I started out drag racing at a quarter mile track here in Iowa. Eventually, I started looking for turns and got into SCCA autocross and hit a few events at a local road course.

With the right suspension mods and a little extra power, these cars can surprise people.

I have made many trips down the strip in mine and won a couple of bracket races with it. Took a couple of laps around road atlanta, and a track called little talladega. Fun car to run around corners. Really suprised me the first time out. Without many suspenion mods it holds really good.

Been to the local 1/8th mile track about 4 times, made a total of 26 passes in 2009.

Just joined the NASA-SE and ran Road Atlanta HPDE1 December 5-6 for their annual Toys for Tots run. Will be going to Carolina Motorsports Park in February where I should be cleared for solo track driving and then two more events at Road Atlanta. When Redline Time Attack announces their schedule I will compete at one event nearest to me.

My instructor was very surprised as well as the other students in HPDE1 as to how well the tC did with mininmal modifications (Coilovers, R Sway, TRD CAI & Axleback, BFG KDW's). I was keeping pace through the corners with a Miata and MR2, and keeping close to a Mini Cooper S on the back straight.

I was able to achieve speeds of 115mph on the back straight coming into 10a, 85-90mph through turn 12, and 105-110mph the breaking point into turn 1.

The only thing that has made me uneasy is how "light" the rearend gets @ 105mph. Other than that the car handles well and is very responsive. I myself am surprised at how well it does with the modifications so far. Looking forward to better brakes, lighter rims and wider tires, and boost!

If anyone wants to run with the NASA-SE region they are giving a free weekend of HPDE1 to new members. Memberships cost about $45 and is well worth it for the free weekend.

I had the same problem, though it was only 70mph into a sweeper. I kept my rear adjustable bar set the same, but my adjustable front bar is what really helped me out.

i really enjoy drag racing, i have done the 1/4 mile on the Tc and on my dsm(i know this not dsmtuners). The dsm was fun to lunch with the 2step but next year i will be using the Anti-lag which i have set to build 15psi instead of 5, i also will be turning the boost up and hopefully i can get in to the mid to low 11s. The tc for been a stock car other than just trd cai and lowering springs its still fun to drag race and next year will also doin more suspension work and autocrossing it.

A rear wing or tall spoiler will help a lot for those that track their tCs. The hatch provides a lot of lift -- just enough to upset the rear -- and without something to separate the air from the hatch's glass, the phenomenon won't go away.

A*REA and I had our tC on the 1/4 mi for the first time ever, at SCION SHOW OF CHAMPIONS in MD this year. that was such a good event.

drag racing is fun, but i have ALWAYS wanted to hit the twisties on a race track! plan to get that accomplished in 2010. glad to see this thread. i live in the northeast US. any suggestions?

I Have been racing my Scion since I bought it, I don't do close course, because a) is quite expensive b) I'm not boosted; but I will try sometime anyway. I always go to the 1/4 mile stretch, best time ever was 15.2 at 90mph.

Last year I was owning all the scions racing at the 1/8 mile track during Scion Exposed in Houston, until someone with spray beat me for like .5 seconds. and not to brag or anything, but I am the fastest Naturally Aspirated Scion tC in Houston, I haven't raced another one faster than me. :D

Track of course...

Best thing to do is if you wanna get into racing go out race your car as is. Then slowly upgrade it so you can feel the difference as its changing.. So you adapt to it. Plus learning lines and how to take corners, really helps your times.

it's called an opinion and like an asshole everyone has one. it's a free country. just giving my opinion, seems like everything has gone "fast and furious" crap now.. sorry if the youngins want to slam gears well then go ahead, but I has nothing to prove with my XB.

Racing doesn't necessarily mean going fast. I've autocrossed my xb before (and would love to again if any events came close to me) and actually won the mildly modified stock class. The xb handles extremely well with very few modifications, and is a lot of fun.

You don't need tons of power to have fun, or go fast (legally)
I'm making 120hp at the MAX & I have TONS of fun in my car.
At autocross, I regularly see mildly-modofied Miataskicking butt - 200-hp Elises spanking 400-hp 'Vettes.

Anybody can go fast in a straight line. Tune the driver & make the most out of what you've got.

what he said!

If you have a box, they probably won't let you run unless it's lowered

Otherwise, some ideas:

for wheels - small & light over big & heavy. 17" wheels weigh around 20lbs - Enkei RPF1's in 15x7 weigh 10 (the tires weigh about the same)
use winter tires in the winter & summer tires in the summer.

If you're looking for function, look for what racers use, not necessarily what's JDM I use & recommend Koni & Eibach

The 1NZFE is slow. We'll never get it to go fast with out pouring tons of money in.

But #1 HAVE FUN

THansenite
01-19-2010, 01:46 PM
I disagree. If you want to get started in racing, bone stock it the way to go. If you have modifications, you will get bumped up into higher classes. My car was turbocharged with no suspension work. I was going up aganist STI's and Evo's. I highly recommend starting in the stock SCCA classes and once you get the hang of it, slowly build your car up to compete in the higher classes. You will become a much better driver that way and learn how aftermarket parts affect the dynamics of your car.

Atomsk
01-20-2010, 02:58 PM
well since everybody is talking about upgrades. Does anybody reccomend a rear strut bar for the tc?

ReaperX
01-20-2010, 09:41 PM
Rear Sway Bar would be much more benefitial than a strut bar (that is assuming you are currently running the stock bar). I would suggest Progress Technology for a rear sway. 22mm and comes with adjustable spherical endlinks, got mine from PTuning for 184 shipped. If you have an upgraded rear sway, I hear the ingalls 4pt rear chassis brace is good instead of a strut bar.

Atomsk
01-20-2010, 10:23 PM
i have ordered a progress rear sway already. I was wanting a strut bar to Just dont know which would be the best option for the car.

THansenite
01-21-2010, 03:17 PM
If you get a strut tower bar, do it for show only. On the tC, the strut tower bar has almost no benefit. The car is already pretty stiff in that area. If you really want performance, you would be much better off getting a front sway bar, better end links, harder bushings, etc. Those parts actually make a difference. A rear sway bar is nice, but having an adjustable front to fine tune the suspension has helped me out on the track a lot.

That lasted until we were getting killed by the guy in the evo and then the two gtrs showed up and raced in the same class. We eventual got our own class at the end and to me it was very fun to race against mostly other members.

search the classifieds on here or http://clubsciontc.com . I've seen a bunch of guys that have purchased the hotchkis set and sell the front bar. IMO you really do not need a stiffer front sway bar.

I took mine to the drag strip twice when I first got it. It was fun but the times were nothing to brag about! I am yet to run it on the track with the NOS and other upgrades, but I am sure I will this season. I have been doing more auto cross events lately. Our local BMW club holds a lot of great time trial events which are hard but a ton of fun!

So to you guys who race your tc's. What kinda front sway bar do you recommend?
I would recommend a REAR bar personally. I thought the stock swaybars understeered in auto-x too much. A rear bar pushes the car toward more neutral handling, by giving the car more oversteer. Putting just a front will cause the car to understeer more. The ratio of front to rear stiffness via swaybar will dictate how much understeer/oversteer you have. This is why TRD and Progress make a rear bar only. The Hotchkis front/rear set is probably the best swaybar setup, since it allows front and rear adjustability. However, I run the Progress rear one and it works great :mrb: Pick one depending on your driving style/budget. Install for the front swaybar is a major PITA, since you have to drop the front crossmember.

Edit: Just read that you have the progress one. If you like how it handles now, a front swaybar will give you less body roll in the front, but most likely it will understeer more.

Exactly my thoughts, quicker steering and some get the rear moving and car will run like a champ.

I'm going to sacrifice some streetability & replace my Eibach SportLines (which have been excellent so far) with some race springs.
MAYBE I'll spring for one or two race seats.
My Bridgestone RE-11's will last maybe half the year...
It all depends on how many people buy Toyotas from me this spring...

In 08 the local scion dealer here (metro toyota/ scion) rented the Kalamazoo speedway for a day and had an event called a "race and drive".
Basicly you could bring out your own ride, and do some hot laps (of course after signing a waiver saying they werent responsable for you finding a wall ect.) or you could give them your credit card (in case you found a wall) and drive a "demo car", option 3 was just to ride around with a dealer employee, but it was alot of fun.

Mounted it on the windshield on the passenger side. Once I get a roll bar I'll mount it on the harness bar.

I am still very much surprised out the quality of video that comes out of such a small camera. I know they did some work on the sound capturing ability over the regular camera. Well worth the money!

I still got a little learning to do on the Nitto's, but they felt great. I now need more camber front and rear. I over drove them a bit during the first day, then settle down the second day. I know how they feel when I exceed the grip limit, and have to relearn some of my corner entry speeds, especially in #1. I also have to get some new brakes, with the extra heat from the tires I exceeded my braking capabilties a few times.

Atomsk

Well after talking with my brake guy we have decided that the HP+ just wont cut it with the Nitto's. Will be using HAWK HT10 up front and HPS in the rear. I will probably have to get custom pads made by HAWK once I begin TT next year.

Very much serious, lol. By my december event I will have a s-pipe w/ a 2.5" straight pipe exiting right behind the passenger door. It will have a flange welded to it to mate to the s-pipe so I can run my current exhaust when dd so I don't annoy everyone on the road. That will be my last point modification to stay in TTF. I am hoping to begin competition by mid next year. I am going to hopefully (fingers crossed) test out of HPDE2 and move to HPDE3 during my August event.

No cage yet unfortunately. I purchased a seat and 5 point harness and haven't even used em yet because I don't have a cage. When I get the exhaust done I will post pics of it for sure.

Interior is still there when I am commuting back and forth to work and wherever else life takes me and the wife. I do pull everything out past the rear seats prior to going to the track though. In August I am going to gut it past the front seats.

Tomorrow I am going to start a little blog thread about my build and race progress so that others may see what I am doing and hopefully build some interest for racing (legally) within the group, and showing that our cars are more than just show pieces.

Good run, but you need both hands on the steering wheel. Try placing them at 9 and 3. For autocross you dont need to shift a lot, usually after you shift into second gear you can pretty much live it in there for the whole course.

Currently I'm working on brakes, suspension, tires, and SAFETY. You can never have too much safety equipment. Then I'm going under the hood to really get that HP up. I'm going to shoot you my email and number so that I can pick your brain as this will be my first year at an "official" track.

I instruct in Chicago Region SCCA's spring autocross school, The Learning Curve. Last year, it was about $120 for two days' instruction - AND about a day & a half of track time!

I took it three years ago & learned TONS. My wife took it last year & was pulling similar times to a SAAB 9-3 turbo - in our xA!

Stay tuned.

I have a question for you that I didn't find in the thread. What safety equipment do you recommend for novice drivers? Helmets and so on.

For me the choices are a bit overwhelming.

All you need is a decent motorcycle or car helmet. that is all!

years ago when i was stationed at Ft.Benning we would have auto crosses evey couple of weeks,i ran a RSR 2.8L Capri. but since i've been back in Arkansas i think the nearest track is Tulsa or Dallas and i hate to drive 250-500 miles just to get to the track. shure wish they had one here in N.E.Arkansas so i could go.

Nothing until spring, but I'm looking to upgrade the suspension. I'll probably use Koni yellows & Ground Control coil kit
