View Full Version : Amp And Cap Install

I'd like to install my amp and cap this weekend, but I'm a little hesitant.
I had the amp installed in my talon and I really didn't care if it looked like sh@t, but I do care in my tC. Is there a pass-through in the firewall that'll accomodate an 8gauge power line already? or is drilling necessary? Or should I just have a professional do the install and not worry about it? I really don't want to spend the extra cash if its easy enough to do.

I put my 8-gauge through the rubber grommet right under the steering column. Works perfect. Just used a screwdriver to push through.

There is a passthrough but I am not positive on where it is exactly. That should easily accomodate the 8G wire. Mine took 4G since it was a loose ho...... ;) I had a pro do mine since I am not all that confident on installing stereo equipment. Good luck though......

yea there is one my brother has I think 4 gauge in his tC and it was ran fine with is cap on the back of the back seat on the left side of the car. So you will not have a problem with 8 gauge, its alot smaller than 4 gauge.

Can you find out an approximate location of the passthrough?

the easiest pass through I found was on the passenger side, there's a gromit in with 2 little nipples on it. you can cut one of the nipple things and push through there. I was able to do it today .... but my stuff's not working ...
in regards to this factory deck .. I have the amp connected to the battery with the fuze, grounded, using speaker wire input from the rear speakers... but notta, no sound. I'm guessing I need to connect these remote power on and remote ground wires? but where? or what am I missing still?

Usually its in the harness on the radio itself... might be labeled p. cont, or remote cont. Which head unit?

its the stock HU for 06... i found the HU power on lead in and spliced into that, works like a charm.

Good job.....nice to know it works now as well as where the pass through is.....

When i did Jorges i did it by the steering wheel column i think

there is a passthrough under the stearing wheel, I found it on the inside, and I think i found it under the hood. I did however do most of my searching on SL and found the nipple thing on the passenger side.
I duct taped my power wire up to a coat hanger, cut the tip of the nipple (I actually had to go back and cut deeper to widen the whole more) and pushed it through. The wire could be run across the front of the engine bay, or along the firewall. I'd imagine the firewall will get hotter, but I tried to run it around the front, not enough cord, so mine's along the firewall.
The HU poweron lead in is on the back of the deck, its the grey wire. I spliced into it right at the plug almost. I tried to make some slack so I could cap it, but no go so I soldered on and electrical taped the spliced wires and electrical taped the rubber tubing back around the wires. The stock HU is a pain in the ass lol. Using speaker wire input, I really need to invest in the apeaker wire > RCA connectors, woul probably improve the sound quality on the sub too.
Next up for me is cutting down the box. It's an old box I had for 2 12in subs. I have one of the old subs that doesnt work anymor filling the 2nd spot. I'm going to tear it down, cut it down to 1 sub and reseal it. right now I have the subs facing the rear seats bc I dont want ppl to see the busted 2nd sub LOL

Dude....totally ghetto.......but hey, if it works...it works....

could be worse ... could be ghetto and not work :md:
really, I initially just wanted to run it and see if it even worked. I've had this sub for several months now, since early/mid winter, and I've had te amp almost as long. They've just been sitting there. The splicing into the deck is the best I could do, the amp power running probably couldn't get much better, it looks like any other black tubing running under the hood.... now the speaker wire into sub ... well that's another story, but it works. I also didn't solder those since I didn't want to make it permenant, very very temporary.... and the sub box ... well ... I'm not going to spend the money on a new box when I have a box lol, just need to dress it up.
Sounds good though. Tuned it in some last night, was ok, really turned it up this morning, and tuned it in some more this afternoon on my lunch. It's good. It's not going to win any sound offs, but it sounds good, definately better than the crapzooka tubes and self powered subs you get at manufacturer, and ended up being insanely cheaper.
I'm happy with it, I damn well better be after I speld my entire evening on it. I had started at 2 with the intention of having it working by 6 for the weekly meet, then I was shootin for 7. When 630 came around, and I was still running around the car I said fuck it, dug down into the trenches and just finished it off as clean as possible. At that point it was no longer a temp install, there was to be some permenance to it, at least in regards to the parts I'd be using with the finished install.
there is the minor detail that no matter how clean I tried to make it, I still have soem loose wires and paneling from inside the car sitting in my garage lol. After working on the shorty shifter and rocking the naked center consol, then tearing the back down and rocking exposed speakers, I kinda like the stripped out look.

Good point...could be ghetto and not work. Don't think I was taking a shot, it was all a joke anyways. We all have ghetto shit from time to time...... and as long as it is temp, who cares.

yep ... and I still haven't put my rear panels back on, and they dont go on tonight either, no time and lighting in the garage is shitty. Not to mention I pulled apart the center consol around the shifter to reroute the wiring for the CCFL's under my seat!
hmm what else can I take off ... are the door panels hard to remove? lol

Are split wire looms worth using? Or just use zip ties? I have plenty of zip ties. I ran all the amp cables so far, the next thing I need to do is rerun the speaker wires through the car to the rear for the amp, find a space through the firewall for the amp power, and find a place to mount my amp (my amp might be too big for the tool compartment next to the spare) and TV tuner. This is gonna be a fun weekend.

I used it to hide the bright red power cable ... so it looked like it belonged, and then used zip ties to hold it out of the way of the actual engine block.
firewall passthrough, there's 2, whicehver's easier for you. Poke thruogh the one thats just below the steering wheel (which I could never find under the hood) or go through the passenger side through one of the nipples and come out just behind the glove box (which I found outside under the hood, but couldn't find inside until I'd poked it through)
amp mounting ... under the rear seats maybe? have you actually pulled the foam out of the tool compartment and see if there's space? How big of an amp are we talking ... and what kind of box/housing are you using for the subs?

Premade kenwood speaker box. Fits in the back with no problems. I haven't tried looking at the tool compartment yet, but looking at the amp... its pretty friggin big lol Not sure if under the seats is a good idea because of the heat it generates.

oo .... that looks like its about the size of my old sony xplod. I have the Kenwood KAC-606, small 2ch 300w amp. yea I unno bout that .... that thing is long ... that just means not only do you get to be creative, you'll have to be creative :loveit:

What is wrong with being creative........
I say lose the spare tire and mount it under plexyglass with a 12V fan to keep it cooler......

I've considered no spare... but I'm very unlucky :D

You've seen my amp right? It's under the floor mat... sunk into the foam. It's got a fan and enough cooling.

I just went out and picked up a Tsunami amp kit. I have a monster set up, but because of the power wire, it'd be only a $10 difference between what I'd need (new 8gauge power wire, ring connectors, in-line fuse holder, fuse)... bleh!

It's not a flashy box setup, but I wanted 2 smaller boxes. I carry a lot of stuff in the trunk for work - computers, servers, printers, etc. I like to be able to pull out 1 sub to be able to fit the stuff in there.

I've been thinking something like that so I can claim back my trunk
hmm ... guess they dont offer the 1sub design anymore .... :(

That's a nice box.... but you still lose the spare tire. I'd rather have mine just in case. I've had to use it before.
Also, there's no room for an amp on it...
Did you look.... they have a 1-sub design...

YES! THe 1sub is what I originally wanted and what I was looking for! Meh!
and the 2 sub still makes use of the tool space on the side where your sub currently is yea?

Nice but I like my set up the best.......I never used the back seat so I just took it out. Now I still have my trunk and spare tire...... ;)

while it helps cosmetically, you actually need to use split loom to help protect the wire under the hood. protects against heat.
Hey Travis have you hooked up speakers in your xB.. how did it go? I heard you are the man to talk to to get me hooked up...

4 and 8AWG power cables? I guess you can call me Capt. Overkill. I have 1/0 Tsunami cable for power and ground.
I just need to get the box built and get everything installed soon.
