How did this happen?
torchedbox
10-25-2009, 01:36 PM
fireman said it looks like it started behind the radio, which is stock. I was driving and smoke started coming out of the dash and the ac vents. I pulled into a parkin lot and about 10-15 mins later thats how it looked.

I dont know if scion will help or not yet. I hope they can. i guess they will have to find a way to prove that it was caused by faulty wiring. I really dont know how it works in this situation.

OH MY!
I'm glad your safe and got out OK. I hope the interior stuff didn't include anything personally important or sentimental. Of course, all was sentimental to an extent . . . That REALLY sux!
Keep us up to date on how everything turns out and what you get as a replacement.
That sux, glad you are okay.

So i have been worried today about how insurance is going to cover this and all and remembered that my car is still under warranty. What do you guys think scion will say about this since it seems like it was an electrical fire?
Car still had 10k and over 6 months left on the warranty

10-25-2009, 10:49 PM
wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!glad ur ok...i hope u had gap insurance cause that would cover it all.do some reserch and see if any other xbs have had an electrical fires or faulty wireing in the past...g/l man..

Wow... Oh man... sorry about your B! Tough situation. It will be hard to get scion to do anything as obviously with the damage it would be very difficult to prove what or why. But go for it, stick to your guns, you never know, and if you don't try the answer is already NO. Good Luck and keep us posted!
holy cow. thats real shitty. i feel for ya. but like everyone already said, at least you are still okay.

I would "hunt" around a see if there are any other instances of it happening, that would give you some good "ground" to stand on.

This same thing happened to someone I know except it was a Honda. He got 10k for it from his insurance.Hopefully you can work things out with insurance and get a good amount worth of money for it.

Wow that's ridiculous Caleb. Sorry about the xB. I hope you get it sorted out quickly.
Yeah considering it's stock... did you have any mods in that general area? Any XM radio or anything? They're going to say any mod you had was the cause (just playing Devil's Advocate here).
Like Kary said though, do NOT settle for 'no' answers. Tell them this was not your fault and you expect to be compensated for it. They ARE going to try to shaft you on this. Push for more money out of insurance and keep in close contact between them and Scion.
I realllly hope it works out for you man. *hugs* I just went through the insurance thing (although in a different situation) so if you need to bounce ideas off someone or just need to have some heavy venting, I'm here!!!

there was nothing ever modded other than the rims and the springs. Headunit, speakers, all wiring, lighting was all stock. I never did anything electrical.

Damn that sucks... like they said we are glad you are ok...
This is what insurance is for make them work for you... They should pay the car off for you easy. Remember to remind them that yours was a RS (Release Series) so its worth more then a regular KBB price... If you don't remind them they will just pay you for a regular xB.

-Update-
My insurance is taking the car to Columbia, Sc, which is about an hour from me, so they can do an "investigation" on what might have caused the fire.
Statefarm rep and a Scion Rep are meeting there to go over the car together to see who will cover the car for me. From what I can tell by talking to both sides it really seems like Scion is going to do their part and cover it under warranty. All i can do right now is wait. Wish me luck everyone.

Get in touch with 1derbox (Deb) and the ChuckTown chapter. They have connections in the city.

How will they be able to help me? Do they have connections with Scion/Toyota?

There is Mike Kennedy . . .
Plus with the local dealers- esp. Gene Reed Scion/Toyota, their sponsor.
I'll let Deb speak for herself, rather than me for her. PM her on here, or post over in the chapter forum.

My insurance agent said the same thing.
I called Toyota and told them about the fire and how everything happened and within an hour i was already talking to a Scion rep and they were actually planning a time to come here and see the car. Fortunately for them, my insurance was moving the car and there is a scion rep in Columbia so they can all go at the same time.

*Big Update*
So the investigation was done yesterday and they found out that the fire started on the back left side of the radio. Theres no way to tell exactly what the cause was just the area it started.
on a side note, i found out that i had a 5year unlimited warranty and GPP insurance. GPP insurance is basically GAP but it also covers your deductible. So no money out of pocket for me and the car will be fully paid off. Plus insurance will cover the original price of the rims purchased from toyota.

11-11-2009, 04:32 PM
Ok here is a new update.
My insurance wants to give $11,250 for the car which is the private party for a non RS model xB. Thats not a big deal really because i have GAP. My problem now is that they want to give me $250 for my $1200 rims. But they are taking the price of the rims and adding it to the value of the car. Making the value $11,500. I sent them original reciepts for the rims and an original window sticker for the car showing the full value and the fact the rims were not included. Do you guys think it is too much for me to ask for a check for the value i paid for the rims since i paid for them out of pocket?
Second problem Im having:
The investigation last week said the car was a complete loss obviously. I bought the car on 7-20-2007 which means the 3 year/36k warranty is still effective plus i bought the 5yr unlimited warranty anyways. The problem here is, ever since the investigation, Scion will not return my phone calls about if they are willing to cover the value of the car or not. Second question is, should I go after Scion about covering this and forget about Statefarm all together?
ScIkO*FaErY
11-11-2009, 04:36 PM
i would try and get more for the car and wheels
my insurance only gave me about 275 for wheels n tires even tho they were 1000
as far as scion goes i wouldnt give up on insurance but i would still try and get something from scion since it was a factory problem they should at least find you a used xb on one of the lots or something like that IMO
Mad_Sciontist
11-11-2009, 05:13 PM
State farm covers up yo $1000 for aftermarket parts. I would push for more and in a seprate check to you. Let your gap cover any balance after the 11,250. Use the cash from the wheels for a dwn payment on a new car.
whynot
11-11-2009, 06:16 PM
i would go after the insurance company and push them with the fact ur xb was a rs edition, not a stock edition...ur gap should cover the rest of loan, anything over that is supose to go to u in ur pocket for a new ride..and dont give up on scion reps neither....talk to ur insurance company in person, not over the phone.and tell them u want them to atleast get u 600 for ur wheels..state farm should be a good insurance comp.and they always took care of the clients..
BATComm1
11-11-2009, 06:30 PM
I agree with everyone else...ride your insurance hard, its easy to say "no" over the phone..you need to be standing in front of them..stick to your guns on the wheels they should cover more than that..i would say at least half of the price..Dont take the first offer !!!!!!

Im sorry for your loss and just bought an 06 xb. I'd like to know if this is common or reoccouring problem with any other xb owners. Sounds like Scion is just brushing you off and letting insurance take care of it. I really hope this is only a rare case and glad that you're ok.

My mom got her 2007 Camry April 20th 2006. The next year model usually comes out in fall of the previous year. Where the Camry was an all new model for 07 it came out in March 06. Same thing with dads truck. It said it was built in 92 but was a 93 because it had the new lights and grill.
