View Full Version : Got 15's! Now with pictures, installed on my dirty box!

Right now I've got 18" Flik Wasps. I'm kinda tired of them and I promised myself I wouldn't blow a bunch more money on my car so buying new 18's is probably out of the question. I am going to try to sell my 18s with tires for enough to buy a new set of 15s without tires and just use the stock tires for a while so I break even. I need to find some 15s that will look good. Well...can 15s look good on my car? I really like Brandon's wheels and Cathy's too!
I'm not sure what color to get but I kinda know what style I want. I want a lip for sure. I don't want the spokes to be flush with the edge.
I have 16 spokes right now, and they are a bitch to clean for shows. They have the little rivet things around the lip too. I want some like..fatter 5 or 6 spokes I think, easy to clean.
Any input would be great. And if anyone is interested in buying my old wheels, let me know. I'll probably start a thread in the classifieds soon.
I checked perfectly round first, of course...but here's all they had that I kinda like...not really feeling the color though.

Hypersilver might not be hideous cause I've got the brushed aluminum grills. I'm not sure though.

I also might consider these wheels, though I'm not sure how I feel about all black wheels...

if you still have those wheels in like towards the end of july let me know. lol oh yeah how much are you selling for

mafiamike
04-19-2006, 10:14 PM
Depends on how much the wheels that I want are! Probably like...$400 or so. They have a little bit of curb rash on like...3 of them, and the clear coat on the lip is a little messed up on 1 or 2 of them. All the tires have half tread atleast, I think.

FrankenScion

15's will not look right with stock tires. I tried and Brandon did too before he went with the 50 series tires he has now.

I think the setup he has now looks great though. But you will need some different (wider and shorter) tires to make 15's look good imo.

mafiamike
04-19-2006, 10:19 PM
Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking. I know I'm gonna want wider tires for sure, and his 50 series look good! I just don't want to spend a lot of money cause when my lease is up in fall...I'm throwing away all my furniture and buying new stuff so I'm gonna need to start saving.

Why are you throwing everything away at once?

I'm not sure how much Brandon spent on tires but I don't think it was that much. Does perfectlyround.com have any 15's you like? Jeff could get you a deal on tires too.

Yeah, I checked there first! I really want something with a little lip atleast. I wanted to stick with glossy black and a silver lip maybe, but larger and fewer spokes. Hypersilver might work cause my grills are brushed aluminum. Hyperblack or gunmetal might work too. Still not sure.

Maybe I should go with these badboys! :rofl2:

Cause I have had the same furniture since I lived with my parents. I've moved twice since I moved out, and I really don't think it's gonna make it through another move. My bed is older than I am fo sho.

Yeah, I was kidding about the red wheels! I guess I'll probably talk to Jeff and see what he can do for me on 15s with tires.

Stock tires are 185/60R15...that sucks. My 18s have 215/35R18s on them. I could go with 215/50R15s. Those would be 1.2% smaller than stock circumference. Do you know what width Brandon's tires are? What did you have on your Rotas? 215/45R15 are 4.7% smaller circumference than stock.

FrankenScion
04-19-2006, 11:04 PM
I had the stock tires on my Rotas, thats why they never looked right. It was quicker though.

You could always go with a widened steelie like the guy in NY did. That was pimp.

mafiamike
04-19-2006, 11:10 PM
Brandon needs to post his tire size!

I hate my 18s cause the tires are so wide and flat that they go pretty much wherever they want to. And I also want a smoother ride.

Ok I finally got on here now.

I am running the Rota GT3's. They are 15x7 and wrapped in Toyo Proxes4 195/15/50's

The rims ran me $399.00 + the Rubber and I think I got lucky and only paid $58 a tire.

I will tell you now, if you want to run 15's you are going to have to get some spacers or find some 8~9 inch rims to get the stance to look good. I still want to go lower to really make the ride look better. But that would take bags which I can't afford.

mafiamike
04-19-2006, 11:20 PM
Brandon, do you have Gold-Lines?

All the 15s at Perfectly Round are 6.5 inches wide. You have spacers in the rear? Right? Are they the kind you just slide on the bolts? Or do they bolt on and then your wheels bolt on to the spacers?

I'm off for the night, I'll be back tomorrow.

Retro Style
04-19-2006, 11:26 PM
Yes I am dropped on Goldlines. I also run 15mm DRS Series H&R Spacers on front and rear along with the OTG Shims in the rear.

The H&R Spacers I had to replace the studs for longer ones that come with the kit. the DRA series only come in 40mm and larger and you dont have to replace the studs.

I like the 2nd set of 15's that Jon posted, they remind me of the Work Emotions.

Personally to do a lip on a 15 is kinda hard, since the lip takes away about an inch of the look. Something like the 2nd or third option of what Jon posted would look clean on the right offset/spacer.

mafiamike
04-20-2006, 10:27 AM
Damn, I think I'd wind up spending more money to make 15s look right than if I just bought some 18s. I'd probably go with the DRM series in atleast 25 mm since all the wheels at Perfectly Round are 6.5 inches wide. I don't think I'ma be getting new wheels anytime soon... :(

Well, I think as long as you get spacers and get the tires out a bit it will look fine dude. Don't want you to give up on the idea. I enjoy my 15's, but I do miss my 17's at times, cause they were hawt.

mafiamike
04-20-2006, 01:09 PM
Well, the 15s were more of a compromise between me trying to not spend a lot of money and wanting new wheels...but you guys are right...I'm gonna have to get wider than stock tires and spacers so it's not really a cost-effective solution to me wanting new wheels. :(

Okay, so I looked around a bit more. I checked the sponsored sales on Scion Life and I found what I want.

I'm getting Drag DR16s in black, 15x7 and using Brandon's suggestion on tire size, 195/50R15. I did a bit more shopping and discovered that 195/50R15 tires are significantly less than stock tire size (185/60R15). So...I am justifying my new purchases using the following:
1. Curb rash will be a lot less of a threat
2. Bumps in the road will be a lot less of a threat
3. Smoother ride
4. Cheaper to buy new tires (than my 18s or stock)
5. Lighter than 18s

So, here's what I've decided on.

http://upload3.postimage.org/147309/DR16_1.jpg (http://upload3.postimage.org/147309/photo_hosting.html)

Unfortunately, the spacers will have to wait until after my vacation/birthday at the beginning of June. It sucks, but the family should throw a few bones at me for spacers, hopefully. I should have them for the Asylum atleast.

I'm waiting on a reply from the seller to see if they can hook me up with a wheel/tire combo. If not, I've priced tires seperately so it will be just under $600 for the new wheels and new tires with shipping.

Now, does anyone know how much I should expect to pay to get them mounted and balanced?

mafiamike
04-21-2006, 02:01 PM
Oh, and Brandon, do your tires have more of a "baloon" look? I think I'm the only person that likes that...Stretched tires are about the gayest thing I've ever seen. 195/50R15s are only about 3/4 of an inch wider than a 15x7 rim. I really wanted 115/45R15 tires, but they are closer to 3 times more expensive. Honestly, I'd like tires that are 1 1/2 to 2 inches wider than the rim...but no one else seems to think that's cool.

Hahaha, goddamnit! I hope you don't mind that we are pretty much gonna have the same wheels. I didn't realize that they were just like yours. Mine are $400 shipped! And the tires...$37 each. I'm not so concerned about having a sticky tire so I'm just buying the least expensive. They've got a 320 treadwear rating, which is what I'm most concerned about. All the other ones are like...280.

You've got 10mm OTGs with additional 15mm spacers? I was thinking about rocking 40mm DRAs or DRMs...I still can't figure out what exactly is the difference. Right now my wheels are either 7.5 or 8 inches wide. The new wheels will be .5-1 inch (12.7mm-25.4mm) less wide. I know with my setup now, I wanted to push the wheels out another 10mm-15mm, so with 40mm spacers and skinnier rims, I should be sitting where I want to be. I'm only kinda disappointed that I'll have a bit more wheel gap now. I pretty much got rid of it but the new tires are a bit smaller in circumference than what I've got now.

Retro Style
04-22-2006, 11:41 AM
Yea.... I know what you mean about showing fender well. I want to be lower just to get rid of that but the only way is bags $$$$$.

40mm spacers would push you way far out though. you would have to do 40mm in the back TOTAL.... and about 20mm in front to get the stance even. I made that mistake at the beginning getting 15mm spaces all the way around and my back wheels still being further insde the fenders. That's why I run OTG's as well.

I really like the Rota GT3's, I just wish I was bagged so I could hide gap...... and the weight savings on the wheels you will like. Better acceleration response and gas mileage will be back to around normal

Retro Style
04-22-2006, 11:51 AM
oh, and if you go for a real cheap tire, look at the tread. I was going to do that until I realized how bad it looked. I had to go with performace directional tires because the cheapies looked..... well.....real cheap. But this is totally your call. I am picky with those things. directionals ( also known as tuner tires ) always look better in my opinion.

mafiamike
04-22-2006, 06:08 PM
I have 10mm OTGs in the back already. Since I will have more wheel gap with the new wheels, I think I am going to go with 40mm H&R spacers. Brandon, do you know what the difference between the DRA and the DRM series is? I couldn't realy tell.

As for tires, the ones for $37 each are Hankook Radial K106:

http://upload3.postimage.org/154556/HankookRadialK106.jpg (http://upload3.postimage.org/154556/photo_hosting.html)

So they are uni-directional. But have a lower treadware rating then the Falken Ziex Ze 512:

http://upload3.postimage.org/154591/FalkenZiexZe512.jpg (http://upload3.postimage.org/154591/photo_hosting.html)

So, since the Falkens weight less, after shipping they are only $12.45 more than the Hankooks, so I'd definately get the Falkens.

I'm trying to get the guy that I'm getting the wheels from to cut me a good deal on tires too, mounted and balanced...check it out :) :

How much could you ship Black DR16s in 15x7 4x100 with 195/50R15 tires to OKC, OK 73159? Do you mount and balance them too? I found some tires for $37 each but if you guys can beat that or match it and mount and balance them, then that'd be better.

$690 shipped, this includes the DR16 Blk 4x100, mounting and balancing, 195/50/15 Falken Ziex512 shipped to OK. please let me know if you are interested the rims will be in stock in about 1-2 weeks
-hikaru

Okay, so here's what I have to consider:

15" Drag DR16s in black with Falken Ziex Ze 512 tires in 195/50R15 from you, mounted and balanced - $690 shipped to 73159

15" Drag DR16s in black from you - $400 shipped to 73159
Falken Ziex Ze 512 tires in 195/50R15 from www.edgeracing.com - $212.21 shipped to 73159
4 tires mounted and balanced at Wal*Mart - $32.51 with tax
Total - $644.72

But, if I am ordering tires seperately from the wheels, I can get Hankook Radial K106 tires in 195/50R15 from www.edgeracing.com - $199.76 shipped to 73159, so then my total would be $632.27

I understand that the Falkens are a superior tire, with a better treadwear rating, better grip, and lighter, so even if I buy the tires seperately, I'd spend the extra $12.45 for the Falkens. It would be a bit of a hassle to go somewhere to get the tires mounted and balanced, so if you can ship the wheels and tires, mounted and balanced for $650, then I'll buy the tires from you as well.

Here is my dilemma:

Eventually, I want carbon fiber fender flares and spacers to push my wheels out as close to flush with the flares as I can get. BUT, with the Goldlines and 215/35R18s, my tires are tucked into the rear fenders just a bit. SO, I can't space the wheels out past the fenders and flush with the flares because they would hit my fenders. I don't think I can get a small enough tire to keep it from hitting and not look completely retarded, and I don't think I want to raise my car up. I also don't think cutting up my fenders would be a good idea...

Brandon, it doesn't look like your tires tuck, do they? Like...right now, if I were to put a ruler on the top of my tire, it would hit my fender before I leveled it out and it would still be pointing at the ground because the top of the tire is just inside the fender. Do you think that with 195/50R15s I could push the wheels out past the orginal fender and flush with flares? Goldlines are pretty damn stiff...I'm just wondering if I could manage that and still be able to go over normal bumps in the road without my tires slamming into my fenders, cause that'd fuck something up real bad. Also, with a larger sidewall, my tires will absorb more impact than with my current wheel/tire combo, so less absorption by the springs. 195/50R15s are a 31.7mm smaller in diameter, so 15.85mm smaller in radius than my current tires. That means that I could take 15.85mm off of the top of my current tires to see where the top of the tire would come on the fender.

If you don't think that's possible, then I'm going to go with 205/50R15s. They will be 10mm wider and 10mm larger than 195/50R15s, and only $4 more per tire. Still a tad under stock tire diameter, but closer. I'm really just after a wider tire and if you get below a 50 series, they shoot up in price almost double.

Retro Style
04-24-2006, 10:55 PM
It all depends on the width and offset of your rims. You keep talking about tire size and not rims. With my rims they would hit the fender unless I stretched tires on which is hard to do at that size and it looks wierd.

My offset on my rims are +38 + add into the factor of the spacers and no I could not tuck.......

If you want rims to push outside the fender with fender flares you would go with an 8 to 8.5 inch rim with 0~+10 offset and have to have spacers to do it. But also, to do that you would have to stretch tires on to get the tire to not hit the fender. Understandable?

mafiamike
04-24-2006, 11:17 PM
Offset and width have nothing to do with what I'm talking about. I'm only concerned with the distance between the fender and the top of the tire. Regardless of offset, I can get spacers that push the wheels out far enough that my tire is sticking out past the top of the fender well. I'm not trying to stretch tires, I hate that look. I'm not sure what that has to do with anything, either. It doesn't do anything that a smaller profile tire couldn't do, atleast. I'm just concerned about the travel of the springs, and whether or not there will be enough of a gap for my tires to move up and down with bumps in the road without hitting the metal fender of the car and slicing my tires or at the very least, wearing them out or bending my fender.

ok ok ok ... I got ya...........

You should be fine...... Mine have never hit the fender with 50's on my Goldlines.... Now if I were dropped another inch I would have to lose the spacers. Also... I am not so sure on the way larger tires will look on the 15's.

If the rim is 6.5~7 inches wide, a 195 tire does the rim justice.... if you went 205 ~ 215 the walls of the tire would bulge out past the wall of the rim. I think this is the look you are going for, but it would not be my style.

It may look good........... it's kinda up in the air for my I guess.....

I hope it'll be okay. I want a wider tire, but I'll go 195s if I can space the wheels out. I'm talking huge spacers...pushing the wheels out like...2 inches past the metal fender. The CF fender flares add like...3 inches to the fender.

Ugh! Just for you. Is anyone from Tulsa coming to Grills and Wheels on the 13th? They made a Scion category just for us! It was the flyer Roger was passing out.

Sorry my shit's dirty, it's gonna rain tonight and tomorrow. I'll take better pictures at Grills and Wheels next weekend. I could use some more spacers, but I've got the OTGs in the rear so it's not terrible.

Thanks! I like them a lot actually. I've been wanting new wheels, and I like black spokes with a polished lip. I hated the ride with 18s after I dropped it on Gold-Lines cause I drive on I-40 downtown every day and it's bouncy as fuck, so 15s have more rubber and a much smoother ride. I was also looking for something easier to clean for shows...My old wheels had 16 spokes, and rivets. I could NEVER clean around the rivets. These are only 10 spokes and no rivets, much easier to clean! I went with a tire that was wider than stock, but with a lower profile (as Brandon and Jon suggested, thanks!). It lowered my car another 3/8 of an inch, gotta watch my muffler on driveways now, but it's great to be able to turn my steering wheel all the way to either side and not rub at all! The only downside is that if you go with 15s, you can't get a wide rim without throwing out some cash. These are only 1/2 inch skinnier than my 18s, so not a big difference, but I do want to space them out more cause I'm looking to get the CF flares from bBist so I'll need to push the wheels out further. Another upside: 4 new tires are around $200 shipped!

Looks good Mike! We are the oddballs.... I think 15's look real good. Now I gotta repaint my breaks again. Yours look good and mine are chipping......

Now you just need to invest in H&R Spacers!

I think it looks better than your 18s...I'm not a big fan of big wheels

Thanks to you I am thinking that smaller would be better. I wanted 17's but maybe 16's would be better.

Those wheels look great on your xB!

I've been wanting a set of 15s for daily driving, and for track days also.

I cut a second off my quarter mile times with Rota GT3's, which are the same as Drags that Mike got, not including better gas mileage going from my heavy ass 17's.

I re-painted mine before I put these on.

And yes...it's time for some spacers soon. I'm waiting until I get flares.
