View Full Version : Judging Idea

I know we have been doing the whole crowd vote thing, which is all fine and dandy, but does it really show where your car stands? Do folks just walking around the place to have a good time really stop to take in every detail of the car? I was wondering if anyone would object to getting in some serious judges. Someone that is not going to be bias (lets face it, we all give our buds the high five sooner than we do someone we don't know). I have someone in mind, but it would be entirely up to you guys, and what the popular decision is. I personally like to get judged VERY seriously, checking the wheel wells, under the hood, taking in every detail, yada yada. Those that have been to serious shows know what I am talking about. We just recently had a show here in OKC where the judging was like that, and some cars that wouldn't normally bring anything home, won some classes because the cars were judged very picky. I mean the judges absolutly checked every freakin inch of the car. I LOVE judging like that!! What do you guys think? I am pretty sure I can get the judges to come up for Asylum if everyone is interested in something like that.

Sorry for the long post!

Shoot... having never been to a Scion show I thought that is what always happened... I think it's a good idea, judged on merit, not on the owner's popularity...

Great Idea! Would also bring an "impartial" eye to table. It would make it a more equal competition, not a popularity contest. Judging may take a little longer but it would definately be worth it.

Could still keep the participant judging for like a "participant pick" category!

My thought exactly. Besides, we were actually at the show for what....4 or so hours last year? That is more than enough time for a couple of legit judges to tear each car apart!

I've just seen so many issues with "legit" judges. I'm not even going to go into all the problems I've seen with those. Besides, that's how every other car show is. I personally prefer participant's choice for Asylum since that's the way it has been every year & we really haven't had any major issues.

Not only that, but it really encourages everyone to go out & check out everyone else's cars instead of cleaning & then sitting in front of their car only. That's really what Asylum is about anyway, getting together & meeting everyone.

But hey, it's up to everyone, so we'll see what everyone else says.

Hmmmm..... I'm going to waffle as Alicia has an excellent point. Being new to Scikotics, and only knowing about car shows where they have judges. I figured that made sense, as it was what I expected. But there is a ton to be said about tradition and the reasonings behind the way they have judged at Asylum and why are pretty cool! You can always opt to enter SEMA if you want real tough judging.... but I have never heard of impartial judging in the auto world, everybody knows somebody...

Half the time, I forget to even go vote at popular vote shows. I always get talking to people and forget about it. I think strict judging would be awesome for Asylum.

I have to agree with Alicia on this one, i havent heard one complaint about how Asylum judging has went, ive heard more complaints about the strict judging at other shows, i mean if you think about it..... When people come to Asylum they arent trying to really scrub down each inch of their car and make it extremely spotless, they spend time with friends, new people and have fun while judging each car.

Ive seen some people actually scrub down their car at shows and get mad thinking the judge did them wrong or didnt judge right, if that were to happen than people would have to worry about where the judges are to wait for them to judge their car so they dont miss them to show details they may miss and sit at their car the time being like Alicia said. Everything goes so great with Asylum with the way it is. But thats just my 2 cents

judging is going to be the same as last year. I have been to a shit ton of car shows and always always always peopleget pissed about the judging! . Asylum isn't about winning a car show, it's more like a Nationwide get together for people that love scions. don't get me wrong tho, I love a good car show where the judges are anal and want to hear about every little detail and mod I've done, but that type of judging isn't for asylum.
and for those of you who mentioned a popularity contest, that shit happens at every show no matter if professionals judge or it's people choice.. it just happens. but last year worked very well and it was fair. we will continue to let the people do the judging.

I like the popular vote as last year was my first show and first asylum and that win for my class was so much more meaningful than the othershows and awards that I won last summer because it was voted #1 by my Scikotic peers....uh family. I also don't think that professional judges would add to the atmosphere. If anything they would make Asylum more serious....In all honesty I have been to serious shows with lots of friends before and they are never as much fun as the laid back party environment that Asylum had. I also loved needing to vote as it gave me a chance to really look at other peoples cars and talk face to face with the owners and get to know them. I don't really care if Popular vote shows may not be the most fair the mood was so much better....Besides all scikotics are my boys...and girls and I was happy to be as fair as I could be.

Well this will be my first Asylum and I didn't even know it was judged... I was just excited about meeting and hanging out with everyone so the judging is just an added bonus in my opinion.

Hey, like I said, it was just a thought. I personally LOVE to get judged that way. It really makes the ones that spend endless amounts of time detailing every last inch of the car, and making sure everything is in tip top shape shine bright. Im not against the peer judging system, I had a blast last year, and will again this year! You all know me, I just got idears fallin out my behind!

Since your show is an import show how about bringing in members of your local hot rod club in. They would be impartial and have a pretty good idea of modifications done to cars. Kind of the way world of wheels gets judged. maybe look for people from local body shops stereo shops or local autozones or oreilly managers. I do feel that cleanlieness should be judged. I also like when some shows have blind judging which is where contestants do not know they are being judged when they are. The judges are in plain clothes walkin with their families .That way there is no schmoozing the judging. If the owner does not know when he is being judged it makes for a better show.

This is the kind of statement that I agree with. Most everyone is traveling a very long distance to be at the show. Some people are driving 20+ hours with no sleep to get there in enough time.

People are not going to want to detail their cars like they do for an actual judged show. They are going to want some sleep, then mingle and get to know people from the different areas and of course, PARTY.

Lets leave the tradition alone and keep it the way it always has been.

Honestly just keep it the way it is. A TON of people come in from out of town and it's exhausting detailing every inch of your car after driving such a long distance. I would however encourage people to take time to look at the details such as engine bays, wheel wells, and such. There isn't really such a thing a "fair" judging unless it is a COMPLETELY neutral party.

I understand that it is hard to detail your car when you travel from a long distance. I know that last year I made sure to walk around look at every car and base my decision on that. Which ones I thought deserved the vote by what they have done to their vechicle, not by how clean it is, or what chapter they belong to. I think if everyone is voting then you need to be fair look at everyones work. We are there to have fun, meet everyone and support everyone.

I know I'm late getting in here but we have a legitimate discussion going on here and it looks about split in the middle. :ponder:

AsYlum is more about getting to know other Scion owners, especially putting names to faces throughout the club. So the walk around vote is a great idea, but also very true on the extra love towards friends when it comes to the vote. That could result in some bad one love to our non ScIkOs.

This event is also a great time for non SciKos to share our dark side love towards Scion. Many new recruits, and occasional chapters have suddenly appeared shortly after the event in the past. Not that we are about numbers its just what happens when we are cool to everyone that shows regardless of colors.

So far this event has worked out in the past but it wouldn't hurt to have outside eyes to oversee.

So how about both. Keep the participant vote but have a few neutral non Scion owners, like a local hot rod club oversee the top 5 Scions voted best in each class. They can take a walk around each one and agree or suggest an order change. This outside set of eyes will look beyond who owns the ride and focus just on the ride.

I do really like Rob's idea. Smart... :)

Personally I think I was slightly hungover and very sleep deprived from the night before! :rofl2:My car was NOT in tip-top shape, haha!
I was actually the CPR of our chapter last year, and I didn't have a whole lot of time to clean my car simply because I was making sure that all of our members were there and I went around to make sure they were all checked in and all that jazz.

I realize it's getting down to the last minute, so I would say "not this year", but maybe something to keep in mind in the upcoming years. But I definitely agree with Kyle and don't want it to be a popularity contest. Quite frankly, I try NOT to vote for people in my chapter when we're at a BIG show like that (unless I feel they are really deserving). :)

Because I see this event as a gathering instead of an actual car show, I want to consider a radical approach to this in the future.

How about we create a fixed amount of trophies representing the event. Nice ones that depict the show and the date but have no classes written on them.

Next everyone with a car there, registers at the show as normal. At the end of the show we raffle off the trophies. That way a truly random sampling of people take home a kickass trophy just for coming, which is the reason to go in the first place.

BTW, see ya there ...

I'm the wrong person to go to the everyone gets a trophy politically correct crap. That's why my kids never played organized sports. You work hard, you get rewarded. Life works that way.

Now a no class on the trophy is fine, and maybe a nice take home dash plaque or something for everyone is all good.

But the reason I brought life back to this thread is because it was a valid point, and a poorly judged event can be the ruin for the event. And considering this is ScIkOtIcs main national event that has been a large result of who we are today in the Scion community, the last thing we want is for someone thinking they got misjudged after the event. Especially if they fly different colors.

Adding a panel of overseers would be no big deal, but please excuse me if I am stepping on any toes.
