Aight, I am trying to diagnose my issue before I take it somewhere and have them do it for me. I have the NST pully's on my tC. About a month ago, there has been a bit of squealing from my belts. I noticed when it squeals, its only when my wheel is turning, ie. power steering most likely, right? Well I popped the hood and had the wheel turned while I was watching the belts.. they stopeed moving.. wtf is that?

I talked to some "old headz" here at work, they're pretty knowledgable of mechanical issues and have helped me before.. they think its the bearing on the power steering pump, said its probably going to have to be replaced.

Does anyone concur, or think something different?

Preciate the help fam :)

I think it may just be the tensioner.. I think when I turn the wheel, with the belt having so much play, the sound is coming from the crank pully rubbing against the still standing belt, sound like that could be it? I will see if I can jack it up and pull the wheel off and tighten it down some. Hopefully that fixes the issue.

I would say it is the tensioner or the pulley. I had this happen to my old truck. The power steering got really shitty and come to find out it was the bearing in the pulley. But you always check the cheapest thing first and that would be the tensioner. Either way it's going to be a bitch because everything is so packed together under the hood. Let me know what you need and we can organize a work party. Sap doesn't live that far away and I think he access to a bunch of tools or some shit. He was saying if I needed help with my exhaust and headers he had tools. I dunno.

I'll give him a shout..

I can do headers and what not, this crap too, just need the tools and maybe another set of hands.

Damn Stu, this is the first I've heard of such problem. Not sure I can be much of assistance on this matter, but does it sound like the sound you get when you have no power steering fluid? Have you checked that as well. I know my Corolla had a power steering fluid leak in one of the hoses. Interested to know where this problem is occuring as well, so I don't run into the same problem. I don't have any pullies on the Car though.

I think its just the belt tensioner guys, I wouldn't think its anything worse, mainly because the steering still feels the same, so I really doubt/hope its nothing to do with the power steering unit.

As far as getting the pully's, get them!!! They are really worth the money and time IMO, you also have to remember that my tC is already over 80K miles, so I'll be having issues that a lot of you wont be having for a year or more.. lol..

So fsu1dolfan, get them man, they're awesome.. I dont think the pully's are directly related to this issue, I think the belt is either the wrong one, or the tensioner is loose and would make sense since there is so much play in it.

Not a problem, I've had my pully's for almost 50K, and no problems.

^^are you guys in 05 tC's? or 2006? 80k is the most miles I've seen Stu, where you be going bro...lol. Real quick though, have you tried some belt dressing? Maybe it needs some lub on it.

I have the 05' model, I had one of the early early tC's, got it only about a week or two after they came out. I havne't tried any belt dressing, i'll keep that in mind, but I'm sure with the amount of play in it, it has to be the tensioner. I'm going to get another belt and try and see if that solves it, then if it continues, the lube, and then someone who can properly diagnose it.. hopefully it doesn't go that far..

As far as the mileage, I have been to Georgia about 7 or 8 times back and forth, NJ, NY, etc. I had to drive to work from Southern Maryland to the US Naval Academy for almost 7 months, with a round trip of over 180+ miles a day. Plus I am big into the street scene here in Southern Maryland, mainly a street rebel.. Probably another reason I have 7 points on my licence.

Doh!

lol, 7 is that all you got? I've had 12 at one point, but not from purpose acts. Just from normal traffic violations...lol. That is a lot of driving though. I was in MD a little part of later last year. My boy was getting married, and I was in his wedding. We also have the other half of our Security Software company in MD. Maybe when I visit the other half of the company sometime, I will look you up (that is if I can remember).

he let me drive his car and the squealing noise became the least of his worries.

anyway, not my fault, his tranny was exhibiting symptoms of abuse like having to go into second before 1st.

found this by karl in another thread and thought you might be interested: "I have experimented with a lot of different belts out there. When upping the boost, BELT SLIPPAGE IS ALWAYS A PROBLEM with certain belts. Here's the general rule of thumb - ALWAYS use a belt with a "solid" design (i.e. the 7 ribs of the serpentine are straight through and don't look like "dotted lines" like Dayco/Davis belts or Good year
Gatorbacks). The more boost & supporting mods, the more risk of slippage. The less rubber on the belt in the form of those "incomplete" ribs, the less contact with your pulleys, and the more chances of slippage - and so on and so on. GET A GATES BELT. THEY ARE ALL STRAIGHT THROUGH BELTS and don't do any of that silly "gatorback" stuff to cut costs. If you compare a Gates belt to another aftermarket belt, the difference in quality is simply amazing."
