a rotten egg smell usually means sulfur, are you sure your passengers aren't shitting their pants when you step on it? lol

just kidding with my last post, sometimes it means that the catalytic converter is wearing out. have you replaced the stock exhaust manifold with anything aftermarket?
Ah, the type of thread titles that catch my attention. I’m such a little kid lol.

I get a smell like something is burning if I'm playing with it. Is that the same thing you smell?

hrmmm the car is pretty young :[ its not very often at all just sometimes, but its at 13k right now i put the intake in about 3000 miles ago, also if i push the button to block outside air then i never get the smell but i first noticed when i was really being agresssive with it on my way to my friends house when he got to my car he said "dude what smells weird" and it was def coming from my car

check your oil fill cap, maybe its leaking and dripping down onto your manifold and burning; hence getting sucked into the vents.

as im researching more more most places say its the converter. but what would cause it to start going bad its an 08 car, im ganna get it checked out on friday, everything is stock, expect the intake but i dont think an intake would cause this :[

if your motor is burning oil, it will destroy your cats quickly, just keep that in mind. cuz its odd to have cats fail that soon without there being a worse problem.

no need to panic, sometimes you can get a bad batch of gas that has a little more additives in it then normal. Burning that fuel in excess (IE stepping on the gas) can sometimes make it smell as well.
so when's the last time you filled up? and how long has the problem been going?

I get a smell to when I step on it and quick shift but not of rotten eggs..it's like a rubbery smell. But it's rare for it to happen, like once every week or so.

i get the egg smell like once in a blue moon, like months can pass, or weeks, the rubbery, sharp smell is more frequent, like maybe a week or so apart, and its only when i gun it hard or let the rpm's climb my cars at half a tank now, i filled it up afew days ago, i noticed the smell a few days ago, there may be a pattern there lol, i also get my gas at several places so there is always more then one stations stuff in there

Not sure how easy this could be for you, but to rule out the gas causing the problem you could try to stick to one station for a whole tank. If it still smells then you could try another station..AND if it still smells then you could probably rule out the gas being the cause of the smell haha.

Just FYI...
Catalytic converters ordinarily don't fail due to hard driving. They tend to fail if they are clogging up for some reason. The rotten egg smell is common with a functioning catalytic converter and doesn't necessarily mean it is failing.
As someone stated before, poor quality gas can cause all sorts of problems, including excessive burning, which can cause the odor from your cat to become more prominent.
A functional catalytic converter should be converting Carbon Monoxide and unburnt Hydrocarbons into CO2 and water. Typically, if you see water dripping from your exhaust tip after the car has been running at temperature for a while, then the cat is probably working properly.
If the cat is failing, you will start getting errors at the ECM, which will light up the dash like a Christmas Tree. You also may notice idle problems or a loss of power.
If the cat is clogged, it will start to heat up significantly. It is not uncommon for a clogged cat to glow red hot after running at temperature for a while. This is a tell-tale sign of a failed catalytic converter.

I also know if the cat is failing, your gas consumption drastically decreases.

If you did wouldn't you then fail emissions test? In VA you have to have your vehicle inspected once every year so i'm stuck with a cat. regardless haha.

I had the same problem with mine (back in 2005 when I bought my car). I took it in to the dealer and they replaced my catalytic converter. I still have the problem every now and then. My advisor back then told me to switch gas grades so I went from regular to 89. There was no smell for a while, but now it's back. There's actually a technical bulletin out for the 05s, but I can't seem to find one for the newer models.
