I installed a Pioneer in-dash DVD unit over the weekend and could not get rid of the pesky "Video not available while vehicle is in motion."

First, I grounded the parking brake switch wire but that had no effect, still had the same message. Then I resorted to reading the directions but they were misleading and said to connect the wire to the "power supply" side of the switch. Reading that too litterally, I connected the wire to the ignition hot and, of course, it didn't work. After a conversation with Clay (krazylowgsx), it occured to me that the parking break switch is simply a ground wire and the switch simply completes the circuit (like all good switches are supposed to). With this information, I touched the wire to another grounded bolt head and the video came on. Well, I loosened the bolt and attached the wire and re-tightened the bolt. Everything worked fine until I drove to work this morning. Again, there was no video with the same stupid message. Thinking my ground was no good, I found another ground source and reconnected the wire and, again, the video worked.....until I turned the ignition off and back on....no video. That's when it finally occured to me that they (Pioneer) set it up so that the parking brake has to be re-set everytime the ignition is switched off and on....to keep people like me from simply grounding that silly little wire and having video whenever you want it and not just when the parking brake is set.....sneaky bastards.

Anyway, simple fix was to hook up a switch in the video grounding wire so I can reset the ground as needed. Just thought I would throw this out there so no one else has to go through two days of pulling their hair out the way I did and to see if anyone else has a better solution.

funny,
i just watched V over the weekend too, though I was at home in the Lay-Z Boy...lol I really liked the movie but was a little put off by the ending. seemed a little too happy-happy joy-joy hollywood ending for me. maybe i was just jealous because they got rid of their dictator and corrupt government... :)

anyway, i was wondering if this resetting the ground wire was a brand thing i.e. Pioneer vs. Kenwood or if it was a newness thing. like will all companies start doing this sort of thing or just Pioneer, ya know?

i liked that movie too... anyways, the ground wire is nothing new, i have, probably the one of the first 7" flipout, a panasonic one that i ground instead of hooking up to the e-brake... i have heard of someone telling me that there unit wouldnt work like that, i think it was a nav/dvd unit, i dont recall... not sure if he new what he was doing either

don't know if mine is the latest and greatest, it's brand new and it's a Pioneer AVH-P5700DVD. anyway, after grounded and put a switch in the stupid parking brake wire, i've had video all the time. speed has not been a factor. i've had video at 75 MPH on the freeway. of course, i installed mine myself. if you take it to a shop, they may be required to hook it up to the speedo to cut off at certain speed. don't know.
