So, for those of you who have set up a turbo before, building your own kit, what parts do I actually need for a good sturdy build?

If I could get a list of the parts and manufacturers that you'd recommend for the parts, that would be awesome. I'm considering buying a kit as well, but I was thinking I might be able to build a better one by piecing things together, and get it for less perhaps.

I haven't boosted my tC, but know people who have. The benefits to buying a kit over building a frankenturbo setup is that you KNOW things work together. It MIGHT be cheaper to buy your own parts, but then you'll want to look at how much you'll be saving by buying all parts from the same company such as Dezod rather than paying full price for all parts from lots of places.

Then again, with the knowhow and research, I've known people who have built a setup that puts down over 320 whp from a kit they built themselves, including fabricating some of their own parts.

Best of luck to you.

It appears that you haven't done much research in this area. Even though it sounds counter intuitive, you will end up paying more if you try to piece it together yourself and it still won't be better than a kit. Yea, you can buy a cheap turbo off eBay or somewhere similar, but you'll end up with bad results and likely a blown engine because of the crappy quality.

As far as building a better setup, companies like Dezod have been around in the Scion game for many years and have continued to make their kits better and better. They know turbocharged Scions inside and out so I wouldn't expect to piece together a kit that is better than theirs without a lot of research.

You'll see it time and time again on these boards as well as ScionLife and other Scion boards...save your money and buy a kit from a reputable company. Dezod was great to me when I was building my setup so I always recommend them. Their kits are proven and there are hundreds (if not thousands) of cars running their setups on the road.

Agreed there are too many well thought out kits available for your car, so buy a kit. If you have to ask what parts are needed for a turbo you really should rethink piecing together a kit. You more than likely would be half way into your build and not have a part resulting in waiting for it to ship. With a kit, all parts should be there and you have a parts list to double check things.

With turbo kits, are there things I should buy outside the kit? Such as internals for the engine? Or are kits from places, like Dezod and Greddy, fully complete, and I won't have to do anything beyond the kit not to have engine damage from using it?

And yes, I've never turbo'd a car before, hence my asking those of you who have done it. :D

Seriously, are you not reading what we say? DO SOME RESEARCH. You can't have people spoon-feeding you every step of the way. If you want to know about turbocharging your car, the following link has the answer to every question you have, guaranteed: http://tinyurl.com/3d7svyn

It also depends on how much boost you want to run and how much money you want to spend. They all will sell you a complete kit to match your boost requirements and resulting parts needed.

As mentioned do some research online and then once you have formed an idea post the idea up and we will help you.

There is no guarantee when it doesn't come from the factory turbo'd. Most people run stock internals until they break something or they want to push the envelope even further. The kits will typically have everything to boost but a tune which should be done by a professional.

Don't need broken record advice, Thansenite, annoy someone else.

The rest of you, thanks guys. I'll just be getting a kit. :)
