View Full Version : Wash Board Feel on Tire?

So I've got 2 of my tires that have this odd wavy feel to the inside of the top of the tire.(Not the sidewall, the top of the tire on the edge for like 2-3 inches)

It's causing a slight vibration when I drive, and I've dealt with it since I put my wheels back on for the summer. I figured they would come out after driving on them but they aren't. I think last summer they were both on the back, which I am running -2.7 camber, and I think I accidentally put one on the rear again this spring. I had it off the other day to check for a leak and I noticed it was extremely worn on the inside more than it should be. Checked my drivers side and it was fine, normal ware, no wavy feeling.

I took it to S&S Tire today, going to have them check each tire make sure they are all balanced and the alignment was still all correct. Instead I talked to the guy and showed him my tires, and he said it was from my negative camber.

I find this a bit hard to believe because so many people run negative camber and I've not seen the wavy effect yet.

Anyone who's read this all I appreciate it, and thoughts?

Sounds like what your describing is "cupping" usually caused by alignment, although camber does affect wear as well.

negative camber EATS your tires, if you keep it this way your rears will be like this all this time, i personally would just keep front on the front and rear on the rear, just switch sides. the front will never feel right due to the wear patter from the rear.

most likely the rear should wear out on the inside first and then you will probably have to replace them before the front....unless you have a lead foot.

either way you 4 tires will not wear the same again now.

BTW your signature is HOTT!

The more I read about cupping, which definitely seems like what it is, the more it seems like that can cause it. Bearings, alignment, worn suspension, bad shocks, etc.

I knew it wasn't going to be as simple as getting it balanced but I was hoping to have them check everything out for me as to what's causing it. This doesn't seem like it's gonna be very fun to fix. I still don't think it's my camber causing the cupping. I had the slight vibration toward the end of last summer when I took my wheels off and I didn't notice the cupping.
