Just tonight my car started making new noises from the back. Stood on my side skirt and started to make the car bounce and I hear a something like a sqeek I guess you could say. I do have lowering springs by the way(Hothckis)
Is there anything I should be on the look out when I try to figure out what the noise is coming from? Also when I'm driving it on smooth roads the noise continues.

Sounds like what's happening with my truck.... Look behind your rear wheels at the arms, there will be a plastic bushing....see if it's shredded. if it is,that may be it....gonna need to replace it. I am not a mechanic at all,so I don't know technical terms, but I just went looked under the back of my tC and you can see it plain as day. Hope this helps....

Hmmm... I dunno about that... my car makes squeaks here and there too, I think of it mainly of the suspension just doing it's job and the sound of moving metal parts and such... couldn't think of anything that would be actually squeaking.

I don't know it's a squeaking when I jump on it but when I actually test drive it it sounds like a vibration or something. I checked everything under the car today to make sure everything is tight and no problems, so I thouight maybe I need to tighten the ones in the trunk and did that too. NOw when I finish the bottom I checked to see if the squeak was still there or if it was less than before and still the same. Tightened the top ones in the trunk and the squeak became a bit less and required more effort or me shaking the car before I hear it. I don't think it can be my sway bar bushings since this is happening on smooth roads.(as many of you know the top nut on one of the bar mounts gave). So after checking everything and tightening it, I'm pretty damn sure it's not going to be a safety problem, but at the same time I want to know what is making the noise. I know it coming from around driver rear tire, so I checked rotors to see if the little heat plate bent and causes it and no. Checked my struts and my springs to make sure they are sitting right and they are. Strut looks fine too. You think this may be a case where something just needs to be lubed? And if so have any ides what may need to be lubed? I don't think my shock blew yet either, but then what kind of noise would a blown shock make?lol
I may need to resort to going to the dealership to have them check it out if I can't find a solution(scikos please don't make it come to this lol)

Very well could be... and I have not a single clue really...

Not sure haha!

Perhaps your just a bit paranoid? I wouldn't worry about it too much unless of course it felt like something was about to fall off haha...

LOL though I am paranoid about my car, you know it's not that when other people hear it too lol. I made my dad double check everything was tight so nothing should fall out, and well worrying yeah I do that alot with my car. It's a new noise and happened when I was going home, like not even 5 minutes away from the house so it makes you wonder haha

This may sound odd but check your rims. Make sure the lugs are tight. My friend had the same issue and it was hit rim wasnt flush with the hub so it vibrated like crazy and squeaked at low speed. Did you torque it? I think 86 foot pounds is what it supposed to be for our cars.

Duck monk I've had that happened to me before too, but it isn't the rim either. It's really hard to explain the noise I'm hearing. It not a clicking but it kind of is. Kind of like the noise you can make with your tonuge but maybe a pitch lower. Happens when there are bump where it gets noiseier. I haven't notice it in high speed but I haven't tried to drive the car at a high speed since the noise came up(was just yesturday after all). I really don't know how to explain it, mabe i'll try and take a video clip of it later

a couple more guesses on the mystery sound:
Blown shock:
Take a look under the wheel well. If your stock shock is shot it will be leaking and you will see fluid covered in dust. Solution...replace.
Rear sway bar link:
The OEM sway bar link has grease filled rubber bushings. This might have rotted through and you are hearing metal to metal sounds.
Wost case scenario you take it to the dealer. They look at it and let you know the problem, you take your car home and try to fix it :)

It might be a sway bar/ end link might of came loose or broke. Could be a shock fell out of the perch maybe.

Are you sure its coming from the outside? I have the trim loose in my trunk and it squeaks like no tomorrow.

Yeah I'm sure it's coming from the outside. I've isolated the sound when I was driving in my driveway had someone listen to see where it was coming from. May be a blown shock, but I didn't see any fluid when I was inspecting the strut and spring. My sway bar does make noise( hotchkis one), but nothing like this. It make constant noise due to one of the mounts making the nut in the sub frame give so it rattles every so often, but nothing like this. And I do have new endlinks and all are secure. LOL as for the worse case scenario, my dealership is pretty stupid. You tell them you hear something and they say it's nothing. I've brought it to different ones in the area before and all say it's nothing not unless you isolate it and give them your own inspection and what noise you hear.

ok scikos got a video hopefully you guys can hear my problem with the rear since i don't know what it is. As far as suspension upgrades, just have the hotchkis lowering springs and sway bars. The sway bar makes noise due to a broken bolt, but nothing that sounds like this. If you can tell its a blown shock from the noise then by all means give me some input on what youa ll think it may be. All my bolts are tight and everything underneath the car seems to be there too.

Wow that is a new one to me. I have never heard that before in my entire life. I will look into it if not Stu will figure it out.

LOL I told you it was a weird noise. My sway bar makes noise but nothing close to what the new noise is. If I take it to the dealership I know they'l just say warranty voided and just to let them inspect it will cost me money, plus there is no gurantee they will find out what is wrong it.
EDIT: Do keep in mind that I don't drive the car hard and even if I did I don't think i'd drive it hard enough to cause something like that noise. Also have hit any huge bumps in the road either before the I started hearing the noise. Sort of just came out of nowhere

did one of your muffler hangers or something come loose?
strike69
07-17-2008, 01:35 PM
Could that make the noise? I did check all of them yesturday and they are all on., not sure if they are loose though, but when I do shake it doesn't sound like a spring or anything like the noise when I drive. I'll check it again
EDIT: checked the hangars all are fine. notice when I was under the car my camber links are making the squeaking noise, put some lube on them and the noise is still there so I don't think it's that so still no clue what is making the noise

Wow, just watched the video from here at home, that's a wild noise, def something suspension related from the timing of the noises with relations to the driving...
Check and see if the springs are seated correctly and not loose at all, grab them with your hand and see if you can tug on them, etc...
Otherwise I'd take that shit in dude... that's weird.

I agree with Stu. its def. a suspension issue, Take it to the dealership, just for a check out, I don't think they will charge you just to see what the problem is, its could be your springs like stu said.

haha will do, my spring are sitting right, not quite in the perch yet becaus ethey aren't gully settled I guess I'll take it in now and see if they can get me a spot to look at it really fast

after about 4 hours at the dealership they called and said the noise i'm hearing is wheel vibration from all 4 tires. They said it affected my suspension and thats what I along as you all hear in the video I posted. As I was there I told him I don't beleive thats all that is wrong with my car and the guy then said that the back noise is coming from my spring but they can't touch it due to it not being a factory issue. They told me to rechech everything and have someone else check it out. Got home took off the tire thinking maybe the metal washer on my bumpstop came off and that may be the reason of all the noise i'm hearing tried to reach it and couldn't tightened my tire nuts and dropped back down the car. Started to shake the car and I don't hear it as much anymore. Still having my friend check it but it's apparently safe to drive. So yeah just to summarize I paid 42 bucks at the dealership to tell me it's wheel vibration and a compliment saying my car is really nice along with the tech asking if I race it haha. Told my dad he said it's bs and a normal person who doesn't know about their car may buy that but like I said I don't lol. Pretty much they told me to buy new rims.

It could also be the coils of your spring rubbing together. I know mine and my g/f's do it cause I didn't put wrap on the springs when I put them in. It took them awile to do it, but they just started making noise one day. LOL Just another idea. :-)
strike69
07-18-2008, 06:29 PM
hmm maybe sinistr xb... My coils on the hotchkis springs are tightley packed so that may be it. I'll look at my springs again to see if there is and chafing issues on them.

that dont sound good but jack the car up from that wheel and make sure the bolt to the strut is tight? if its loose could be allowing the strut 2 move n make that clunking noise all i could think of bro hope u find it out

FYI - Never answer the dealership folks when they ask "do you race it." That's just setting yourself up for failure...
Not saying you did, just general FYI... :mrblue:

LOL I know Stu, I was like yeah I'm gonna fall for that, I just simply replied with a no. I told my mom yu neever answer that because they'll void warranty and she was just like oh...but I really don't race my car haha no point.

New Development on my problem lol. I've noticed that the noise only occurs in low speeds under 25 mph. Also happens more when you slowing down such as when braking you hear it. I took it on the highway and other roads along as places where you do over 25 mph and the noise disappears completely from what I've noticed. I've also tried it to see if the noise was present in corners and it isn't as long as you are fast than 25mph. So does anyone else know what it can be?

OMG I fixed it. Lol It had to do with the position of my end links which were at the maximum point and couldn't adjust anymore which made the noise you guys heard in the video. I fixed it by making the top and bottom bolt go in different directions and moving the bottom onto the inner side of the hole instead of the more outter side to give it more adjustability. Drove it around and it seems to be fine so far. Now the only thing I seems to think may be an issue is the lower bolt hitting the sway bar if I hit a bump hard enough, but I tried it in the drive way pulling in and so far nothing. I'm so happy. I found out as I jack up the car, put it on stands and then jacked the wheel hub up it started to make a crackling noise. So I thought it was the spring like the dealership said and focused on that. Brought it to my brother in law and he saw the links that couldn't maneuver. So pretty much though I didn't solve I found the problem just looked in the wrong area lol. As for now I'm not sure if this is just a temporary fix or a fix for good only time will tell, but as of right now I'm just excited my car isn't making that horrible racket anymore. I do thank all you scikos for trying to help me figure out what was wrong with my car and giving me input on what may be the cause of the noise. Again thanks to all you.
P.S the dealership was wrong.lol
