Check out Memphis Car Audio also. Their Power Reference line is really good. Are you running any amplifiers for your mids and highs? I know the Type R's and JL's will need some power to get the best sound possible.

Just like anything else, go to a shop, and listen to them. I myself have cerwin vega's but I don't ride in your car. It is like Coke and Pepsi. you pick what you like. Hope that makes sense. But all the above replies are true, stick with a major brand.....

I'm an Alpine guy. But, like Indylowbox said, you will likely need to add an amp to properly power the speakers and get the best sound.

I'm a JBL kinda guy, just installed a pair of GTO427 (4") and they sound GREAT with the stock setup. Gonna be hella better when I add the amp !

i know it might be a little too expensive for you (since you said under 100)
but i got a pair of Boston SL60's and i couldnt be happier with them.
they are a HUGE improvement over stock!
the lows are sooo much lower and the highs are super crisp!
if you want to go all out the first time (which is my point of view, why spend and get cheap equipment the first time when down the road you will want better anyways) just get the SL 60s, i promise you that you wont be disappointed.

Stock fronts are 3.5", but 4" will fit, rears are 5.4" but I'm told 6.5" will fit surface mountied, doors are 6.5"...

kicker speakers are terrible sounding...no offense.
I would look at some eclipse coaxials. They sounds pretty good without an amp on them. I wouldn't suggest the type R's even if you can get them for $100 they don't sound good unless amped.
Honestly I would wait and save some more money up and get some components.

spock. you are right. my kicker speakers are lying in the trash. they sounded so good in my 65 mustang. im starting to think anything would have sounded good in my mustang. its basically a big metal one piece sub box:)
edit: can you get bass without adding subs/amps. i like a little extra bass but not enough to have subs (1. to kill my trunk space. 2. to kill my style as my whole damn car rattles.)

for '04-'06 xb's
the new polks 2 way "db651" (not the shallow version) sound great in the front door panels..w/a bit of modification u can actually fit them in the doors w/o the trim ring/adaptor...
-2 way speaker w/built in crossover
-i believe 3/4" tweets on them that swivel/angle so u can adjust tha sweet spot
-very efficient speaker and good mid bass
-rubber speaker surround, marine based speaker so they definitely can handle the elements (i.e. moisture, sun, etc)
-check out the reviews on this speaker on www.crutchfield.com (http://www.crutchfield.com)
-got them awhile back around $79, but i think they list or go for $99.
but definitely not a bad deal for speaks under the $150 range and they kick ass!

As I've stated earlier, I'm a JBL man but I'm getting the Premier 8" Sub on advice from a few others....

Im a huge fan of alpine,so i would definatly recommend the type-r component speakers if you can afford them go to www.hookedontronics.com (http://www.hookedontronics.com) and they have type-r componets for $139 and type-r 2-way for $94,both 6 1/2".If you go with the components, get an amp, alot cleaner and louder sound. In my opinion, the type-r componetns are one of the best sounding out there, crisp clean but not over powering highs and great mid bass with decent lower bass too, very well balanced!A good place to look is www.amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com) ,type in the part # from the manufacters website and you can find almost anything dirt cheap!:Musique48:
