For those of you who don't know, EZ-BAKED is in process making a FFF for the xB with Sonar headlights. However he is having some delays since his volume manufacturer is backed up at the moment. I started this project a while ago but got delayed with other things for a few months, I'm now back working on it.

If you still want a FFF, want to buy from EZ, but don't want to wait, get a pair of his OEM eyelids and make your own. They seem to fit decently over the Sonars; just be forewarned that much bodywork is a PITA, a power sander is a necessity. All you need is a stock grill, a pair of eyelids, two part epoxy, fiberglass mat and resin, and body filler. Pretty straight forward to do, just takes a few coats of filler and a lot of sanding to get everything smooth. I obviously sill need to paint it.

LOL, trust me, you couldn't afford to pay for the hours of labor I've put into this thing. Not for sale, just a one-off I'm doing. I can post a guide if you want to make your own, I did have a few design challenges to overcome that would be helpful for someone else wanting to make one. Fiberglass and body filler aren't hard to work with, if you can mix drinks and spackle you have the skills needed. Just have a garage or shed and a charcoal respirator because the fumes are harmful otherwise, and dust gets everywhere when sanding.

xBtony, I'm not EZ-Baked, I just used the eyelids he makes as part of this project since the thinness of the design on the outer edges of the light makes fiberglass too brittle to use. He is doing another FFF that is made for Sonar lights, check out his webpage for the pre-order.

I'm hoping I got the last of the pinholes filled yesterday and will try and prime today.

How much have you got into this? I am needing one of these since my xB was just wrecked and the damd cover was ruined.

Was only about $100 in materials but I must have put in around 30 hours of work on it, not including drying time. If done smarter it couldbe done in around 16 hours but whoever built it would need a donar stock grill and a set of EZ's eyelids, this is not a cover, it is bonded to the stock grill. I may look into getting a mold for the outer surface and possibly laying it all in fiberglass to go over a stock grill for multiple productions, but don't plan on doing that anytime soon. Plus then I would lose the uniqueness of it.

Yeah, I likehis work too. in addition to the eyelids, I got the Decepticon badging from him and a battery tie-down, though it doesn't look like he's taking custom orders at the moment for that sort of thing.

Forgot the zoomed out picture. Hopefully I can get it on the car this evening.

Yes, it is sitting on an older ported speaker box that I couldn't get to fill well in the car, sounded amazing though and makes a good work stool.

Finished it! Unfortunately there was one bubble where it seperated during fitment so I'll be doing a bit of spot filling this week or next, but overall it came out pretty good.

I believe that's what we're saying is messed up and needs filler and stuff..

Right?

vettereddie

yeah, on the left hand side where the eyelid meets the main grill is where the bubble is. I'll be taking it off to reprime and paint, probably another three day job. I'll be bracing the wings this time during paint to hold the curvature.

I've actually got a crack there now as well :ablow:

I wish it would have worked as designed, but until i can find a solid way to bond the eyelid plastic to the grill plastic, it's just too unstable. Given how fragile it's turning out to be, I'm going to modify the design, making it a three piece by seperating the eyelids from the main grill. That will give it some play, make the pieces smaller and more robust, and allow me to remove the bumper without touching the eyelids. It will look like this when done, but better:

Here's some night shots. No photoshop on this one, it was below the dew point so I could actually see the beams coming out from the projector lamps. These will be insane once I throw in HIDs tonight.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/2760/newgrilloldunderbody010vd5.jpg

Also, I like how the lid covering part of the halo gives it a meaner look (no headlights on, just running lights and underglow)

Nope, keeping the new set of Sonars so I can throw in HIDs and have the halos. Visibility at night will be greatly improved as well.

Dang that really turned out sick. Did ez's lids fit over those HLs as well as the oem or did you have to mod them?

vettereddie
07-26-2008, 09:52 AM
I ordered a set of the blanks and trimmed them on the front edge. I believe the way he has the pre-painted ones they will cover the high beam too much and may leave a gap on the corner where the turn signal sticks out. Once I trimmed the front, they fit well.
