BurnT smell

There was a burning smell coming from my engine bay today. I travelled bout 120 miles total. It was pretty strong like rubber or paper burning. Recently I put in the spectre air filter and silver star ultras with the lube that cones wit it. Im still good with oil, I have 2000 more miles till my next change. I'm at 32000 miles and Toyota just recalibrated my airbags

If u guys have any ideas or what I should check first I'd appreciate it

i had the same problem, i just got my car though, i decided to shorten the proper breakin period and push my car, well i had the burning smell comin thru my vents and when i took it to my mechanic he didnt even have to check anythin, he smelled the same burnt smell and he told me right away it was the trans fluid overheating, i was shifting to close to redline so the trans was burning up the oil.

yeah even in automatics, i did the same thing o.O *sigh* but i dont go near redline nemore. and the fact i took my axle back off, that didn't help either.

Taking off my axle pointed my exhaust upwards, and was melting the styrofoam off the spare cover.

So what should I do? I know my wife punched it once but the xD always shifts by 4k rpms

I just check all fluid. The oil is lookin ok and the ATF is pink doesn't smell at all like burnt. So I'm just warming up the car to check. Any more ideas would be appreciated

It's now be idling for about 8 min it's warmed up and no smell. ????

Also the smell was coming through the vents. We smelled it outside the car. It seemed to be coming from the right side by the air filter cone and headlight

I've never gone neR redlining it. Probably 4.5k or 5k rpms at the most cuz I used to redline my civic all the time and prolly replaced a/t because of it.

Just drove a few miles and as soon as I stopped at the light the smell was back. It's not the oil or ATF.

Yep it seems most new xD's go through a burn off period.

so u finally found out what was causing the smell :) and i have an a/t i dont have m/t. but sumtimes i play around between the low and high gears. my car shifts normally around 3.5k sometime it wont shift til 4.5 k which bothers me cus i road raced so much it seems the trans got used to shifting at higher rpms. i wonder if the ecu picks up on that and after awhile it gets used to the style of driving :/

Idk. My wife drove the xd for mainly the first two yrs and it shifts at 4 or 4.5. Lol. Must be my heAvy foot.

Not trying to be dick but someone is driving way to damn fast. My car shifts at 2-3 K and I'm still easily pulling away from traffic.

That's only recently. I've been hitting the gears since I put in the Ai. It'll shift roun 3 for the most part.

I actually found something, guessing a plastic bag, stuck to the exhaust. The smell though was come throughout the car

Theres either plastic or foam on the pipe underneath. Lol. I was sh!ting bricks for nothing. Had same issue driving back from Scion De Gras last year. When we stopped for gas I could smell something burning and popped hood and couldn't find it then as I was coming out the store I saw the bag under the car and got it off but the smell lasted a while until the bag was completely burned away.

As far as shifting, I have a manual and most cases shift around 4 to 4.5K when I drive it. If I shifted at 3K I would be in 5th at like 35MPH. I hit 3k in first around 10MPH.

But there are a few times especially entrance ramps to expressway I will get it up to redline and shift just before cutout. Even a few times messing around I have hit the rev limiter in first spinning tires and then in chirped in second and third. ***BUT I DO NOT DO IT ON A STREET WITH MULTIPLE OTHER PEOPLE AND DO NOT STREET RACE***

I must correct my self. I get to 15 at 3k in 1st and 50 at 3k in 5th
