View Full Version : VSC Traction Controll and Engine Light on

I disconnected my battery today to redo my headliner and most likely my dash. I never got to doing my dash but disconnected the battery anyway.

Now my VSC Traction Control and Engine light is on. I drove it around the block and when I get to 3000 RPM my car acts like it's going to stall out.

What gives...

Well I don't know about xB's but on the tC when you disconnect the battery and then reconnect it, it resets the ECU so you have to let it sit for awhile running so the ECU can re-learn the air-fuel ratios.

I would try reconnecting the battery again, then letting it sit running for 20 minutes or so.

i just had the same problem with the car acting like it is about to stall. i took it to my local toyota dealer and they said that i got water in the power coil and that it cracked a spark in half. so i would check there. because it cost me like 65 dollars plus labor to get fixed. my check engine light is still on that is because i have a aftermarket engine cover that frayed a wire and they said it would come back on.

I tried letting it sit running this morning for a half hour and nothing changed. I called Toyota and the guy said it sounds like it could be more serious with it wanting to kill it's self at 3000 RPM's.

I guess I have no choice but to bring it there and have them look at it.

he said he was going to do his dash and never got to it.

Yup, I was gonna do the dash to, but never got to it. Honestly. I probably wont even bother doing my dash now with this problem if it's a major fix.

I just read in another thread about someone else that had the same problem after they disconnected the battery, it turned out it was the mass air flow sensor.

it definitely could a be a bad MAF sensor, here is what I think, the ECU built the fuel map while the sensor was functioning, but if something went funky with it, resetting the ecu would mean it would rebuild the fuel map but incorrectly.

MAF sensors are very sensitive, damn when sensitive equipment goes bad lol

my advice would to be to take out the MAF sensor and see if its dirty or got any debris or anything on it. if there is something obviously noticeable, then that would probably be the issue.

I wonder if the SOP should be to disconnect the MAF *before* the battery? Maybe the voltage spike that can occur when disconnecting the battery is enough to fry the MAF?

It was the MAF censor. I get to go pick up my car in a few hours. I think he said over the phone it would be like $360 or somewhere around there.

Since it's the MAF, would that explain why I was only getting 28MPG at best?

360 bucks? you can get one at the auto parts store for like 90 bucks and a core charge of 60 or something like that. Well you've probably already had them fix it by now, but in the future if you have any problems and you want to do it yourself, I'll be happy to help.

Thanks for the offers! I was more paranoid I guess then anything. I just wanted it fixed and don't know much about engine stuff. I can make my car look good but anything mechanical is beyond my talents.

The grand total was $344

Right there with you bud, but I have learned that getting on the forums helps out immensely. Though you may not be handy with a wrench, you probably have a friend or two that is. I find helpful info on here all the time. If you are nervous about getting under the hood, just have a fellow sciko help you-most of them are ready and willing to help whenever they can!!!
