hey guys, the other day i took my valve cover off to paint it and i noticed that once i took it off and the cams were exposed that suddenly there was this horrible smell of death coming from my valve cover and the exposed engine parts.
any ideas ?
i mean it smelled horrible, my friends who live across the street cameover and were like whats that smell and after i told them i didnt know they decided to not stick around for very much longer because of the weird stinking issue.

I'm guessing the smell wasn't there before you pulled the cover? Should only smell like motor oil. When was the last time the vehicle was driven before you pulled the cover?
I was reading in another forum that an xA owner picked up their car from storage after being on military deployment and rodents had made a nest in his HVAC system. If you're car has been sitting a while, might be a dead animal, though I don't know how it could get inside the engine unless you left the oil cap off.

thats weird. There really should only be 3 possibilities of crap in there fuel, coolant, oil. I have never mixed them together to see what they smell like. Does everything look fine? look like there is just oil in there?

You pulled off the valve cover? Maybe the gasket around it was melting?

gas and oil smells pretty awful - so does wet oil...be more specific about the smell...did it just smell like a dirty engine, like fuel or oil? or did it literally smell like a dead animal?

I rebuilt a motor that had blown a head gasket. The mixture of the coolant and oil smelled like total shit!!! I mean a really, truly hard to describe smell. Does it look like just oil or maybe something in the oil????

uh oh! sounds like Mike has a blown head gasket...
hey, Mike - does your exhaust puff clouds of white smoke? Check your coolant reservoir and make sure your coolant isn't cloudy - if it is, you need a new head gasket, brother.

my coolant looks pink like the way it always looks ..
and yeah .. it's a hard smell to describe ... smells like ass.
just rotten stink of some kind ..
nah, my exhaust only has puffy clouds of smoke in the morning .. but thats from condensation. cause it goes away after the motor heats up ..

i am thinking that it might be brake fluid.. i did a fluid change on a toyota mr2 and the fluid hadnt been changed since it left the factory in '85 and the old fluid smelled like rotten fish.
otherwise i think the "wet" oil might be it..

brake fluid smells pretty fuggin bad, but it shouldn't be in the valve cover.
I relate the smell of brake fluid to rotten female genitalia.
