View Full Version : Should I do it?

Found a guy that wants to trade my stock header for a dc sports header. actually, he wants to trade anyone his dc sports for a stock one.

Should I do it? I've been in contact with him, it is off of an '07 with 39,xxx miles on it, and he says it is in great condition. I asked if it threw any codes, and he said it threw the cat code, but I know a fouler will fix that issue.

Questions now.

1) Do I need a new gasket to install this header?
2) How do they sound with a stock exhaust?
3) Is this worth it? (Hassle wise with the fouler and installation, performance wise, gas milage wise)
4)This is my DD, so installing it would have to be painless, meaning he meets me, we swap out the header. Can this be done?

Don't really know anything about that exact header but...
Yes you'll need new gaskets. If it's one that deletes the cat converter you'll notice a bit of a performance difference. Even with stock exhaust it'll be louder, raspy type of sound. If the primaries are thin walled(four tubes going to the collector) you'll have a pingy tin sound under the hood. It's not going to help fuel economy. Sometimes certain headers like to leak or blow gaskets, tend to rust out because of condensation that collects in them. Personally I don't think the performance gains are worth it, it be different if your goals was to performance mod the crap out of it. Plus I'm sure there's a good reason why this individual wants a stock one back.

My two pennies. ;)

you brought my thoughts up in that last sentence. I wonder why he is getting rid of it. I do want to do a cat back exhaust eventually, more than likely early next year, and that will give me a better sound, but i don't want any raspy noise. it is a 4-1 collector, but I'm not sure if it deletes the cat or not.

I just hate he idea of getting one and it screwing up and then me trying to hunt down and pay for a stock header because I didnt keep my stock one.

Keep the stock - in my opinion he is getting rid of it for a reason. Don't want to be stuck with someone else's nightmare.

Found this thread on Scion life. Looks like +8hp & 5ft lbs of torq over stock with their test.

looks like quite a good gain really. hmmm

Most of that gain is because your eliminating the cat converter but you being on the other side of the river don't have to worry bout emissions. :thefinger:

Headers is a good performance upgrade, but it will definitly be raspy, gonna sound like my car :) but maybe even louder...

i would do it if i had ANOTHER stock header, but getting rid of your header might not be wise, because it might eventually get annoying to you and then you won't have the stock one to put on. But it is a good investment.

i'm not sure about the whole installing process. but it's ur choice. are u looking for power upgrades? sound what are you looking for?

I wouldnt mind the power upgrades. as for sound, I want an exhaust for the sound, cuz I know the headers are really raspy. I could however put a resonator on it and silent it a little bit. I was reading though that the ceramic coated headers (this one) have an issue with cracking and leaking rather quickly, and frequently. if this has been on the car for the last 39,xxx miles then it might just be a matter of time. I think I would be better off getting a new one and keeping my stock one around

Usually the header comes with the gasket, and it will work, so everything will be plug and play for each car. The gains are minimal, basically you get more in the highs, but less in the lows IMO. They look better, but sound like direha in a can. Most everyone who switches to a header makes a thread on "HOW DO I GET RID OF RASP" Resonator after resonator etc... still sounds like crap especially with the stock exhaust. You can add more mufflers or resonators, but then you will be loosing the power you just gained. I did a silencer in my tanabe and it helped, but when it is cold the rasp is more metallic fart. So do your research and see if you want to do it. One more note is be careful with the O2 sensor, they are stripped on so they are hard to remove and hard to reinstall, just going to have a bunch of patients on that.

Hey, I am not here to tell anyone what to buy or do. I feel that honesty is the best policy, why BS everything? I have a header my self, and after as bad as I talk about it, I still like it. I like a challenge, plus it looks way better than the stock manifold. So do what you feel is the best, and if you need the help, I am here bro.

Joking? Whats that?
lol
Go with the 4-2-1 header that is made of good stuff. I don't really like the Megan, I have seen some really rusty ones. Strup, DC. WR is my fav.
