View Full Version : WIERD NEW TWIST on delayed cold shifting

I GET THE COLD SHIFT-DELAY THING during the blue-light warm-up so don't hangup on me yet! THIS IS DIFFERENT: My 06 xB shifts within a half-block from start; down-shifts during a several block stretch of light acceleration/coasting; BUT THEN refuses to shift-up on a couple blocks of flat straightaway; AND THEN up-shifts during a slight incline (and under slight acceleration) BEFORE it reaches the top of the incline!! JUST WIERD. Two Toyo service guys say this is still normal (reasoning that it must be right since the computer so commands) and one said he would have to drive the route first-hand to say for sure. I count three violations of the theory that the cold-delay shift is programmed in this case to protect the engine/transmission: 1) the initial shift-up within 100 feet or so 2) the refusal to shift-up several blocks later (after up-shifting earlier when, if anything, the engine/tranny were even colder) 3) shifting in the middle of a climb (though slight) under acceleration. This last one is triply wierd since, when warm and under similar road conditions, the shift would be delayed at least until we reached the crest of the incline.

Background: The little blue light is on all this time. This has only happened in the spring, summer, and autumn months with overnight temps in the 50-60 F. range. I expect that in the winter ( zero degrees +/-) the initial up-shift will be delayed until we are well past this flat-down-flat-up-flat stretch of road but will update this post after our first winter together. Mileage is not a factor (30,000k) and neither is maintenance (no change after major service in June when I switched to synthetics).

It is no biggie and only happens, at most, once a day. Still, I would appreciate, at least, an explanation that accounts for the apparent violations of the purpose of the shift-delay feature. In this case the purpose of the shift-delay would be best served by delaying shifting until after the final incline/acceleration (it is only about seven blocks total) and a little closer to when the blue light would go off (about another 1/2 mile). At most, I would like to know if the computer can be tweaked to respond properly to this situation and afford the car the protection the system was designed to ensure.

Thanks for your thoughts and experiences (and solutions?). Larry.

when you are going up the hill and it upshifts, how much gas are you giving it?

Your car isnt shifting because of the Blue LIght.

Your car IS shifting because the car senses its on an incline and downshifts to provide more torque to get it up the hill.

^x2 something like that. when I am in my girl's box, I have to almost put the pedal to the floor to get it to downshift again and go. Where hers does it and it sucks is an on-ramp to the highway by my house that goes uphill
