Well after a certain year, probably 70's or 80's, all cars from the factory came with an airbag in the steering wheel. Taking it off and putting on another one is a huge offense. I asked a shop if they would do it for me but they said unless its a track car they won't do it. They said that its a federal offense for them and they can get fined up to $10,000 for installing it.
But I still want it haha

Lets be honest who really cares about legalities, i know I dont especially when it comes to my car, Ive thought of doing the after market steering wheel but I just dont wanna risk an accident! They look effin sweet but my safety for myself is way more important then anything else!!! IMO

If you do after seats with 4-5 point harnesses you dont really need to worry too much about an airbag. But thats just my opinion.

Harness beats an airbag anyday. And lets be honest. What isnt illegal to mod on a car these days. People run aftermarket suspensions, exhausts, HIDs, underglows, dark tint, turbos, etc.... But no one thinks twice on the legality of these.

4-5 point harnesses are not safer than a air bag UNLESS you have a roll cage, in the case of a roll over and the roof colapses (which is what happens with the tc) you're screwed. so air bags are important. don't do it unless you have a full blown show car.

My 91 CRX didn't have airbags in it....

Well I still want to do it. It's something I really really really want. If something happens it happens. Oh well. Oh and someone told me that the airbag light goes on which gives a decrease in power because it is some sort of safety precaution. Is this true?

if it is then shit because i've had my airbag light on for 12k miles now and uhh.... i don't think thats true at all. you can do it but get racing harnesses and a cage if you want to do it, otherwise accident and head trauma are in your future

If your airbag light is on then your airbag isnt working either. And how exactly does a steering wheel airbag help you in a roll over? Its not even going to deploy.

What will a cage do in a front end collision that would cause airbags to deploy? Absolutely nothing. 4-5 point harnesses are much more safe than an airbag anyways. I know people that have gotten broken ribs, broken nose, and some other things. Most people with harnesses already have a harness bar or a cage already. I'm getting a cage for mine as well as harnesses and a quick release hub.

another thing u shouldn't be in a car with a cage unless you're wearing a helmet. You're gonna bash your head against the tubes and be all jacked up, and no the half inch or whatever of padding isn't gonna help either. That's y I wouldn't put a cage on a street car.

i just said in the case of a roll over unless you have a cage harnesses are much more dangerous than airbags. MOSTLY if you do not have a cage / harness bar as your spine will compress and kill you instantly which is MUCH more dangerous than an air bag. this is all i'm saying:
don't do it UNLESS:
- you have a 4/5 point harness with FIA Approved racing seats
- A roll cage

Yeah the steering wheel is cool but unless its gonna be a track car, I wouldn't sacrifice the airbag. Not unless u want to wear a helmet driving to arbys or wherever u want to go

agreed, that is a good point, basically to sacrifice that airbag you need to make a lot of safety additions in other places. HANS FTW

Okay I understand the safety precautions necessary if I were to take out the steering wheel. Quick release hub and 4-5 harness bar with new seats and harnesses would be okay but not safer than an airbag. I understand the risk of losing my head literally if I were to get into a head on collision or roll over or whatever. But damn, idk. I barely drive my car, about 100-150 miles a week. Sometimes more but I'm just sayin...it might be worth it. Its not worth my life but idk. haha. me ftw.

I put a max of 75-100 miles on my car a week. I like less than 5 miles from my job. I am getting a second car so I think I'm good to go with getting harnesses, a cage, and a quick release.

i'm probably going to look into a DD and keep the tc as just like my special weapon. DD meaning like a Ae86 haha or 240sx. A fun DD. So I might be good with quick release etc as well.

Yeah, if you're not really worried about your head then go for it. They do look a lot better than what we've got now. Maybe try putting some bubble wrap around you head.

Bubble wrap sounds like a good idea. Why didn't the NHRA think of it? haha.

haha. i'll go tell that to the people at raceway park when i go for a 1/4 run. and i'll say that i quoted it from you and they'll commend the scion scene for such bright ideas lol.
and Sciko Stitch. Was/Is it worth doing the quick release hub?

It is if you don't want your car stolen. Adam (Iateacricket) has one and he has to take his off every night where he lives. Plus there is the cool factor. And all this talk about losing your head if you don't have an airbag is a load of shit. So everybody that didn't have an airbag back in the day died or had severe head trauma? I don't think so. Plus they didn't have seat belts since they weren't a standard option until the 70's. I took on a telephone pole head first at 40mph and my seat belt saved me from even hitting the air bag. So I'm sure a har
ness worn properly would probably be just as good as having an airbag because unless you sit hella close to your steering wheel you're not going to feel it. I say go for it! Just keep you stock one when you go to sell it because it is illegal to sell a car without all of the original safety equipment (if you get caught)

Thanks man, I appreciate it. I will make a final decision over summer. I really want one because it is a great security factor as well as pretty kick a$$.
