View Full Version : Aurora Garnish v2.0

Well folks, I'm back.

It's been a while since I've created anything custom and this time, instead of doing something new, I've decided to better perfect on of my original works.

I'm further along than the pictures indicate, but I don't have those uploaded just yet. I'll finish posting all the pictures when I'm done. Hopefully everything woks out the way I've visioned it in my head.

As always, I welcome any and all thoughts:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o307/aj2k3/Aurora%20Project/Illuminated%20Trunk%20Garnish/P1010391.jpg

And after this point, I played around with some Acrylic sheets to do a somewhat R&D phase of the design process.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o307/aj2k3/Aurora%20Project/Illuminated%20Trunk%20Garnish/P1010392.jpg
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o307/aj2k3/Aurora%20Project/Illuminated%20Trunk%20Garnish/P1010397.jpg

Then came the translucent resin. This was the first of many planned layers in order to get the thickness desired and provide a much more durable garnish piece. Currently, the garnish weighs significantly more than the OEM version.

One question I did have for you all...which do you think I should do, modify the OEM TBL to an additional reverse light (i.e. swap the LED's to white and tie into the reverse lights) OR extend the illuminated garnish so it covers the TBL location and does away with it all together.

Thoughts?

what is going behind the clear? i would say just get rid of the tbl. I am really thinking of doing mine how you did the picture for the white one. smooth out the whole ass end.

Lights will go behind the clear. I've spent a good 3 months getting the clear PERFECT with the garnish surface. I get goosebumps running my hand over it!

I'm thinking I will just do away with the TBL. It'd actually be less work than changing the LED's in it.

Some Updates:

Needed some minor spot adjustments.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o307/aj2k3/Aurora%20Project/Illuminated%20Trunk%20Garnish/P1010610.jpg

And a test fit was needed in order to see what needs to be tweaked and just how much.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o307/aj2k3/Aurora%20Project/Illuminated%20Trunk%20Garnish/P1010669.jpg
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o307/aj2k3/Aurora%20Project/Illuminated%20Trunk%20Garnish/P1010668.jpg

After thinking everything over, I decided that since I have a better/new TBL, I'll delete the OEM one completely. So, I played around with a mold...

Thanks both of you. It's a subtle mod that just makes the WORLD of difference.

Updates on the garnish. 800 grit wetsand of primer prior to paint.

I'll let it fully dry overnight and see if I can shoot some paint tomorrow if the weather is above 60.

Well, today turned out to be productive minus having to run into work for an emergency.

Ok, so here's the progress I've made today. I've gotten the paint thrown on and, once dried, removed the decal (illuminated part) and it's now ready for clear coat.

Note: Placing a decal on it, painting over it, and then attempting removal of said decal is a whole lot easier in concept than it is in real life to do :?. It doesn't show in the picture, but the bottom right leg of the 'N', some of the paint pealed off when the decal came off :icon_redface: and I'm stumped as to how I can fix it. I wonder if I can spot paint it...thoughts?

Ok, clear coat is on peeps and I got those little tough spots out. There's still a couple spots here and there that weren't 100% perfect, but this is a one off and w/o factory equipment, it's what I was able to pull off.

All and all, I'm very happy with how it came out and CAN'T WAIT to install it tomorrow and light it up!

Technically this counts as "tomorrow". I just shot these before going to bed. Just trying to figure out where to place the LED's for optimal lighting but don't want to have too much shining through or you don't see the actual emblem.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o307/aj2k3/Aurora%20Project/Illuminated%20Trunk%20Garnish/P1010806.jpg

This one above, you can see the bottom row of LED's reflecting a bit, but the surrounding LED's look nicely placed.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o307/aj2k3/Aurora%20Project/Illuminated%20Trunk%20Garnish/P1010804.jpg

Now with this one above, I changed the direction fo the LED's and made them point backwards. My thought was if this garnish is pressed agains the trunk, then the LED's will flood the area. Much like the LED in a cupholder and then adding a water bottle.

You know, you are soo right with the LED placement comment. For lights, I have 6 waterproof LED strips from Oznium. 2 are short, and 4 are long. This thing will be wired with an adapter so it plugs into one of the license plate plugs. The new LED's for the license plate lights will be tied together and wired to a second adapter and plugged into the other license plate plug.

Thanks man! Appreciate it.

Actually, it'd be classified as a run light I guess. It will come on when you turn your lights on...simultaniously w/ the license plate lights.

The_Butcher
10-24-2010, 03:40 AM
I would wire it as a brake light.. with maybe only 1 row of LEDs wired for running.. that way it is lit when the lights are on, but gets brighter when you put on the brakes.. a running light that bright might get you pulled over.

ok so 2 short and 4 long, u can have them eather faceing straight up to"spotlight" the clear or set them back aimed at the clear, if u were gonna do running and brakes id have the 2 wired to the running and the 4 wired to the brakes that way its insane bright when u hit the brakes

That is an idea. I really wanted this thing to be like 'on' all the time. If the LED's I have are too bright, I can always subtract from the equation. I was just afraid of doing what I did with the first prototype and that was people just didn't see it at all when driving behind me. They had to actually wait until we stopped and could get right ontop of it before they're like "oh yeah, there it is".

So with that in mind...I guess I'll have to just play with it later today.

Wow andre' i totally respect your work its beautiful work of art yay you!!!

current lighting looks good just try to hid the bar from direct view, if u wanna hook them allup id suggest a aux switch maby run it thru a resistor day to day then whe u really wanna lite it up flip a switch to bypass the load, or get a potentiomiter so ucan controll the dim...ooo maby even run it to ur das lights on that factory dimmer

These are actually good ideas bro, thankx! I would, however, have to do them a bit later after Scion Night because I only have tomorrow to work on it and install it. Monday is work all day, and then evening is getting ready for the next morning when I head out. I will hide the LEDs from direct view so it does just kind of light up the area. I need to get some 3M tape to hold the LED's in place and I should be good.

hey andre this is the project i wanna do gonna be hard but sick ass shit if i can pull it off. gren led scrolling message

Oooo, that's a cool idea. Hmm...we could deffinitely do something with that. Shoot, I'd make a window in the garnish (kinda like how mine was constructed) and then place the LED scrolling pad behind it. This way it's projected from the elements. Then, you can just paint over everything except the window area. If the scrolling pad is black, I'd do the garnish in black so everything blends better and then poof, you turn on the scrolling text and you got yourself the first animated garnish!

The_Butcher
10-24-2010, 05:10 AM
Andre- how did you make the mold????

Aurora
10-24-2010, 05:15 AM
The mold for the OEM tbl was done w/ plaster of paris from Micheals. It's extremely easy to work with and hardens rather quickly. Able to pour into it after about an hour of sitting time.

As for the main part of the garnish itself, there was no mold to be made. It was all done free style and a sh!t load of wet sanding by hand. The epoxy/resin mixture I used, you could wet sand but only by hand. If you went up to a orbital sander, it would create too much surface friction and fracture the foundation.

I just went with the 1 row of LED's along the bottom and 2 small ones to the far left and right to just throw light inward. It's enough light to light up the SCION lettering, but not enough to be another brake light. It should be subtle enough. We'll see.

Honestly, retail on a one off like this would be up there a bit. All I can say is this prototype took me 7 months and 3 weeks from start to finish. That's a lot of labor, lol.

Nice! I thought you wanted a garnish of the 2nd Gen xB done up, but the front bumper....that'd be pretty sick my friend. Lets start brainstorming and get this turned into a reality.

Oh, and if you know of a tC hatch garnish and 3rd brake light I can get my hands on for cheap or donated....I think in January I might start a replication of this current illuminated garnish and sell the current one. Always wanting to perfect my designs. Question is, how much would someone pay for this one off...hmmm.

Definitely a one off for sure. Only other one out there is my v1.0, hehe. Yes, Matt and I will begin working on a 2nd gen xB one. We'll have to see if it catches on....

Question is, how much would someone pay for this one off...hmmm.

ya i want both lol cmon its me more lights the better haha

Hehe, you're right on that one bro. We'll figure something out to get you all pimped out too!

I'm still working out the details. If I can figure out the process and how much I'd charge for one, then I'll work with that and post up from there.

dang, thanks!
Yeah, i looked into the patent idea. It's like $800 for something along these lines and only lasts for so long, after that, it expires and people can jock your style.

I have looked into manufacturing patents before. the application is $1500 whether you get it or not. ALSO you should hire a patent lawyer who will research your product and help with the application to make sure everything is on the up and up. they run anywhere from $3,000-$6,000.

that's a lot of coin...Patents last for around 30 years then you have to reapply for it again.

A patent pending costs around $100 but only lasts 1 year. One idea is called a poor man's patent. A "poor man's patent" is essentially an urban legand that claims by writing a description of your invention, and mailing it to yourself or someone else by mail or certified mail, will protect your invention.

Then I found this:

Poor man's patent- an unfortunate myth
A patent protects an invention, and gives an exclusive right to the benefits of an invention. It is possible for an individual inventor to file a patent themself. We do not recommend this, as a poorly drafted patent is basically worthless. If your invention is worth protecting, then it is a wise investment to spend several thousand dollars and use a patent law firm (http://www.biotechbeachlaw.com/)- you will have much stronger patent protection.
Additionally, common myths such as the "poor man's patent" and common law patent protection do not protect an invention. A "poor man's patent" is essentially an urban legand that claims by writing a description of your invention, and mailing it to yourself or someone else by mail or certified mail, will protect your invention. This is not true at all, and can in fact hurt your later patent rights.
Sending a a certified letter sent to yourself or someone else can legally only prove one thing- that you sent a letter to yourself or someone else. It does not prove what is inside the envelope itself, and will not stand up in any court or before the USPTO.
A "poor man's patent" is an unfortunate myth that many believe. It can also harm you in the future, as an inventor must be dilligent in pursuing an invention. Taking no action, which could be shown by only having a so-called poor man's patent could show that you have not pursued your invention, have abandoned it, or even concealed it- all which could pose problems in the future if you attempt to obtain a valid patent. In short: there is no such thing as a poor man's patent that can protect your invention.

Thanks for the info and advice. I'm just taking things as they come. I'm currently shifting attention to the interior and, should I come across the correct materials, I can see what replicas can be created.

Thanks bro. I still get a lot of haters, but that's how it goes.

I'm actually looking into putting in the time (and it will be time) and making another one of these, but this time make a plain one that I can make a mold of. So right now I'm on the hunt for a garnish and oem tbl in mint condition (meaning no chipped edges, all in tact). I'll modify it and then try and get a solid mold made from it, then it's "taking requests" time.

That one might be easier since it's a smaller garnish anyways. I'd have to get one to play with it.
