View Full Version : October NoVA Event - Skyline Drive

This event is open to everyone, NoVA or otherwise.
We are looking to host a Fun Run down Skyline Drive on a weekend in October. I've looked at a couple possible options, and posted a poll up top to have the group decide on the Saturday we will go.
Here's what the trip will entail.
Meet up at Wal-Mart in Front Royal at 10:00am, gas up locally and proceed to the park entrance. (The drive is 105 miles long, and has a strict 35mph speed limit.)
http://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/upload/whole_park.pdf
Travel down Skyline Drive and stop at some of the overlooks and scenic spots at the park. Maybe also get in a group photo. I am thinking that a picnic lunch would be easiest along the route. But am open to suggestions.
After we exit the park at Rockfish Gap, I am thinking that we could roll in to Charlottesville for a group meal there. We've got a lot of options we can consider there. From there, Richmond folks can roll down 64, and Northern folks can roll up 29 to get home.
So, let's discuss the particulars in this thread, the poll to determine the Satruday we go will be open for the next 2 weeks! (You can select more than one if you are flexible on dates.)

So let's start talking about logistics. I am thinking we may want to have some FRS radios on hand if people own them. As we will be in a national park, cell service may be questionable. (If nothing else, to carry in the front and rear vehicles in the pack.)
Has anyone done the run themselves? Any suggestions for stopping points?
Let's get the discussions going so we cam make this event the best possible!

I think normal grandmas are a cliche or something. My mom is a 67 year old grandma, and when she isn't driving at warp speed in her Jeep she is driving at warp speed in her Polaris snowmobile or her ATV! (she also kayaks... It really puts me to shame.)

Hello All!
So as I sit in this lovely tropical weather, a thought occurred to me. Do we have a plan if it rains on the 16th? So I wanted to put forward a backup plan in case Mother Nature doesn't agree with us.
What I would propose is having a rain date of 10/23. I am thinking that with the members being spread between Richmond and the North, this would be the best way about handling this, but will that work for everyone? I wanted to see what the consensus was.

All Don't forget to bring $15 for the admission fee, and a bagged lunch for everyone in your car!
Here's the official road info from the National Park Service:
Note: RVs, camping trailers, and horse trailers are welcome, but be prepared to shift into low gear. Also, be sure you will clear Marys Rock Tunnel (just south of Thornton Gap entrance from Route 211) at 12’8”.
Remember when driving was fun and relaxing? No? Well, believe it or not, your car can be your escape. A slow meander down Skyline Drive will give you a whole new driving experience.
The Skyline Drive runs 105 miles north and south along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park and is the only public road through the park. You can enter Shenandoah at four places: Front Royal near Rt. 66 and 340, Thornton Gap at Rt. 211, Swift Run Gap at Rt. 33, and Rockfish Gap at Rt. 64 and Rt. 250 (also the northern entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway). It takes about three hours to travel the entire length of the park on a clear day.
As you travel along Skyline Drive you will notice mileposts on the west side (right side if you are traveling south) of the road. These posts help you find your way through the park and help you locate areas of interest. The mileposts begin with 0.0 at Front Royal and continue to 105 at the southern end of the park. The largest developed area, Big Meadows, is near the center of the park, at milepost 51. All park maps and information use these mileposts as a reference.
The maximum speed limit is 35 mph, so you can roll down your windows, feel the breeze and experience every curve and turn of this beautiful drive. There are 75 overlooks that offer stunning views of the Shenandoah Valley to the west or the rolling piedmont to the east. The park purposely leaves the roadsides unmowed so wildflowers put on a show all year long. In early spring you can see trillium peeking through the grass. June’s display of azaleas is spectacular, and cardinal flower, black-eyed susans, and goldenrod keep the color coming right into fall.
Deer, black bear, wild turkey, and a host of other woodland animals call Shenandoah home and regularly cross Skyline Drive in their daily travels.
Watch carefully for these animals who may dart across your path without warning. At 35 mph, you’ll stand the best chance of a fun and exciting wildlife encounter rather than an unpleasant wildlife experience! If you want a closer look, be sure to pull completely off the Drive and stay in your vehicle. Remember it is unlawful to feed the wildlife.
RVs, camping trailers, and horse trailers are welcome, but be prepared to shift into low gear. Also, be sure you will clear Marys Rock Tunnel (just south of Thornton Gap entrance from Route 211) at 12’8”.

As McGeorge is way down in Henrico this sounds like an event that will be convenient for folks who are in the Richmond area. Why don't you post up a separate thread and roll call. Make sure to get photos and all, and we can make sure to get new members accounts activated.

We can roll over to Brown's in Charlottesville, They have a special event all this weekend, but I am trying to get a foot in the door with them.
Here's the info for the event:
http://www.brownautos.com/tent-event/
I've got some ideas where to put down for food afterwards too. We got a joint called Raising Cain's in town there which is really yummy. It is down the street from Brown's event.
Location: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1805+N.+Emmet+St%2CCharlottesville%2CVA%2C2 2901&hl=en
With the Richmond folks down at McGeorge, I propose we have them roll up 64 at around 3:30 and meet us in Charlottesville for 5pm, we can then roll deep over to the event and make a good impression!!!
Wayne, you down for hitting Miller's next week to show them some love?

Well despite everything, the Skyline Drive run was a success.
It was an absolutely beautiful day, and the perfect weather to take the drive on. The leaves were vivid with autumn colors, and you could literally see for miles.
We took a ton of photos, so I am posting up some of my favorites here.
We also got to offically welcome our newest member Chris, "ThisorthatxD" to the NoVA Chapter.
Oh yeah, and I had to update my Avatar... :)

That's not a bad idea, I am a fairly recent transplant to Virginia, so I will open that conversation up to everyone else. Maybe you all can come up with a ride for us to take that will fit the bill, and I will learn more Virginia geography in the process. :P
