View Full Version : working on a new place to mount my front license plate

So I did a quick photoshop rendition of what I'm working on. Basically I'm making a new license plate bracket using perforated steel pipe strapping to mount it above my hood in front of the windshield on the passenger side. Derno if it'll work but there are a couple holes on the underside of the hood near the hinge that I can use. The strapping can reach around the rear edge of the hood and mount to the license plate. If I set the plate forward a couple inches I'll have enough clearance to get the hood up without the plate running into the windshield.
As for the applicable laws concerning the front license plate... since I still have CA plates I found some of the regulations that prohibit people front mounting their plates behind the windshield on the dash etc. at least for California. (Simplified of course but if you want the full text I can paste that here too)
1.) Must have both front and rear plates
2.) License plate can't be mounted higher than 60" off the ground
3.) Front plate must be mounted on the front of the car (behind the windshield = middle of the car)
4.) Must be clearly visible
5.) Must be mounted securely and not be able to "swing"
There are also laws I found regarding obstructing the drivers view
1.) Driver must be able to see clearly through the front windshield
2.) The only exceptions to the rule are non-transparent sun visors not mounted on the windshield, rear view mirrors, and stickers on a 7" square on the bottom of the windshield furthest from the driver and a 5" square on the bottom corner closest to the driver.
With that said here's my solution... btw let me try it out first before anyone else try it. I AM SIMPLY STATING MY OWN PERSONAL INTENTIONS AND DO NOT CONDONE THE REMOVAL OR REPOSITIONING OF FRONT LICENSE PLATES. Don't blame me if we all get tickets for this -_-;

try to mount it on ur lower grille with zip ties. I did that on my tC. But make sure you use some camper tape to secure the back of ur license plate so it wont scratch ur bumper. That is probably the easiest, or u can drill holes to mount ur plate. its ur call. hope it helps

Allen, from the pic it looks like he has holes in the bumper, I think he is just looking for something different. Plus Allen on the tC they make a license plate holder that goes into where the tow hook goes on the front bumper. I don't have a link right now though.

I've looked at some other options. I've seen the towhook adapter, I kinda wanna rock the towhook though. I've thought about attaching it to the lower grille but I have plans on taking that whole insert out. I do have holes on the bumper but I'll get that filled sooner or later, and I did do some photoshopping on the front bumper because the original picture was with the license plate mounted in the stock position, I just did a quick clone stamp to get rid of the plate on the front.

Yea I like the tow hook option too. I rather only have one plate but I know that ain't gonna happen. They also used to make bumper plugs to cover the holes, it's slot cheaper than having them filled. But idk if they still do make them or not.
To bad you couldn't have someone airbrush the license plate on the front haha. But I don't think that would go over well with cops.

the holes on the bumper are the least of my concerns, I can throw a little fiberglass on the back when I take the cover off (to remove the lower grille) then fill from the front and vinyl wrap that middle section. Going to the hardware store today, wish me luck

So did you find anything to mount it with? Since you said you were heading to the hardware store.

I replied on my iphone but I guess it didn't go through... but yeah I did find some stuff to make it with. While I'm figuring out how to mount it to the underside (without the use of JB Weld or anything else sloppy) I fabricated a makeshift bracket affixed to the lower grille and offset towards the passenger side.

Yeah that's how I have it mounted right now, my ultimate goal is to mount it above the hood in front of the windshield on the passenger side

Rob, Josh post this in another part of the site. I think it is interesting, not sure if will work for what you are doing, but it has potential..

might not be illegal to not have one in WA

I think it is illegal, since if your state has a front license plate it is supposed to be displayed somewhere on the front of your vehicle.
But I have already come up with an idea for that hide away plate. Might have to get it here soon.

I never said anything about motorized. The non-motorized will work fine.
