I noticed on saturday this light started flashing when I turned my car on. I looked in the manual and it means I need to change my oil. My question is how does the car determine this? Is it by mileage or by the level in my oil tank? I checked the oil level and it looks good. The reason I'm asking this is I just bought the car used on 12/21 and the sticker on the top left of my windshield says I have another 2000 miles to go before I need another oil change. Also, if I were to change the oil myself, would this light go away or do I need something to reset it? TIA

That light comes on determined by mileage.
You do have to do a manual reset. I think the instructions for reset are in your manual, if not let us know, and we can find them for you.

when you first turn the car on it will flash. when you are getting close to needing an oil change, it will flash for a while longer after you start the car. Once it hits the 5k mark, the light will come on and stay on.

I looked in the manual but I couldn't find anything about a reset for the oil maintenance. Can someone elaborate on this?

Hold the odometer button down, turn the key on, you will see a coundown on the odometer, just release the button when its done!! :wohow:

The light usually starts flashing around 4,500 miles after the last reset, and will stay on after 5,000 miles!!

Yeah, I just got back from the stealership. I wasn't sure what the previous owner did/didn't do, so I had them do the 30k maintenance on it along with fix the passenger door handle.

Thanks for all the info everyone as I will be doing my own maintenance from now on.
