So this will be my second spoiler install that I tape on, using 3M automotive double sided adhesive tape. This is an alternative to drilling holes into your roof and hatch as suggested OEM installation.

My first one I did is still on my car and definately not going anywhere. I picked up another xB for my wife and someone suggested I take pics of how I installed it.

STEP 1:
I recieved a used TCM spoiler that I bought here from another member. First thing I did was remove the old adhesive from the spoiler located on the two ends. Most of it just peels right off.

STEP 2:
I removed the remaining adhesive using some Goo Gone and a microfiber towel. Best tool for this job was actually my finger nail. For tough spots, let the Goo Gone sit on the adhesive for a minute or two before you begin scratching at it.

STEP 3:
Now its time to remove the plastic pegs that are used during a "Drllled Installation" There is two of them.

Best tool to use for this is pliers that look like these....

STEP 4:
Once the pegs are removed, now its time to prep your surface areas. I used a little bit of rubbing alcohol on a microfiber towel and cleaned off the two ends of the spoiler and the two areas of the car where the spoiler attaches.

STEP 5:
Now its time to start putting the 3M tape on to the two ends of the spoiler. You wanna make sure you cover the ENTIRE surface area with tape. If you can, always use the highest grade automotive adhesive tape you can find. Autozone or Pepboys will most likely carry it. Take your time and trim off the edges.Run your fingers over the tape and apply pressure to make sure it attached to the spoiler well. When your done both side should look like this.

STEP 6: Now its time to put the spoiler on the car. I suggest using two people to do this so each person can see where your placing each end.

BEFORE you remove the second side of your double-sided tape, you might want to do a mock fit, just so you both know where your placing it. Once your ready, remove the back of the tape and carefully add your spoiler to the car.

YOU WANNA MAKE SURE YOU PLACE IT IN THE RIGHT SPOT THE FIRST TIME !!! If not it is very difficult to remove and you might have to re-tape the spoiler again, taking you back to Step 5.

Make sure after its applied, you apply pressure to the taped areas to ensure a proper bond.

STEP 7: Now your install is complete and no one will ever know that your spoiler was taped and not drilled. And if you ever remove your spoiler you want have big ugly holes showing through ! Good Luck !

3m tape has been holding my tC spoiler on for about 4 months now. Even a speed test of 120.

Do you think this method would hold a "Fab" style spoiler?

what is "fab" syle?

the main thing is the amount of surface area the spoiler is siting on the car. I didnt know if the xB wings like this would hold.
My spoiler on the tC is the Viniati. large area to tape. I wouldnt try it on the factory pedistal spoiler.

the only thing you have to worry about is someone holding on to the spoiler or just yanking it off...

why is this a good alternative to drilling?
can you do this in conjunction with drilling?
because ive been looking at getting a spoiler. and i hate when your rolling and some trashy car comes bumpin down the street and it sounds like its gonna vibrate apart. so i strive to reduce the rattling. might this help to tape along with drilling?

ive used the double sided tape stuff to keep that thing over the licence from vibing when my subwoofer hits.

using tape and then drilling would be the best. the drilling would hold it strong and the tape will stop the vibrations.

an update on mine :: After a few months in the Texas heat, the heat won and I had to drill holes for the xb spoiler. The tC is still holding strong though.

cool thank you. i was worried about taping because like you said the heat or just weather in general might loosen the tape. and then you pay like $100 for a spoiler and someone can rip it right off?
