On the xD I just grab the rim of the black surround for the cluster on the vertical parts between the speedo/tach gauges and the side gauges and pull it straight out. It just plugs into the dash itself with friction tabs. It helps with clearance if you lower the steering wheel. After you remove the trim piece you will see the entire gauge assembly. Unplug the two electrical connectors in the face of the unit in the areas between the center and side gauges, then remove the two phillips head screws that hold the unit into the dash and pull it out. Takes a couple of minutes at most and sounds more complicated than it is.

you forgot the pixi dust needed! but yeah, its that easy. the joy of scion, if it looks like it should just pull off, it does.

Once you have the clear plastic lens off to access the needles you just pull them straight up off the needle shafts. Before you pull the needles off, gently use your finger to move them away from zero and then back down until the gauge stops. Make note of the position relative to the markings on the face. This is the zero position.

When I put the needles back on I put them only slightly on the shafts with the needle reading much higher than zero, then gently rotate them down to the gauge stop and use its resistance to slip the needle on the shaft until it reads zero and then gently push it the rest of the way on.

Do not push it on too far or the needle will rub on the gauge face and cause you trouble. If it does then pull it off and try again.

It will make more sense once you start fiddling with it. Go slow and build force as needed. As long as you are paying attention about the worst thing that can happen is that the needle cover will pull off the hub and come apart in your fingers. If this happens don't panic. You can super glue the parts back together (off the gauge of course) and try again. Make sure to give the glue a few minutes to dry and finish giving off vapors before you re-install it so you don't get a white haze on your gauge face.

Good luck.
