View Full Version : A little confession
The Arrant Knave

It's been said, the first step to recovery is realizing you have a problem and then admitting it. So....Hello, my name is Jay and I am a closet Scion lover
I am 47, married, Father of 2. I wear khakis, drive a Buick Lacrosse, play golf, and can usually be found keeping one eye on my 401K and the other eye on any guy sniffing around after my daughter. For fun I usually engage in putting my foot up my son's arse concerning his GPA, or necking with the wife to the embarrassment of said offspring. In four short words...I am your Father.
So imagine my surprise when the wife came up to me the other day and said that she bought herself a new car, a Scion xD.
a what?
a pretty dark blue 2010 Scion xD, and look...it's got a spoiler! <squeel>
how much?
16K, out the door. and they even filled it up with gas! <giggle>
oh, that's nice baby....way to go. (what the hell is a Scion? and it looks like I could use it for playing golf with.)
so I go back inside thinking great. she got screwed and in 2 years she's gonna want to trade it in and then I'll have to resume my role as a chest thumping slayer of car salesmen and get her a good vehicle and never, ever mention that although she is the perfect wife and perfect Mother she should leave the car buying to me since, well....you don't buy quality cars that are smaller then a lawn mower and only 16K.
it took about an hour before curiosity got the better part of me and I went into the garage to look over what I'm sure will be the subject of various jokes out on the golf course this weekend. "look, it's got a spoiler!" <snicker>
hmmmm....it's got a lot of features. and it's bigger inside then it looks from the outside. wait, is that a GPS in the friggin stereo? WTF? ok, but how does the lawnmower drive?....let's find out. 45 mins later and one "I'm letting you off with a warning this time sir, please slow it down" I get a call from the beautiful mother of my future felons.
"Where the F*** are you?!!! and where the F*** is my new car?!!! and oh, while you're out could you please pick up some tomatoes for dinner tonight, hun?...love you!" (I didn't tell her I knew exactly where I was because the GPS actually works as opposed to say, my new 4G iPhone.)
returned home and then got serious. online search of consumers digest, edmunds, etc.....intense reading of owners manual, crawling under car, going thru car looking for anything that even comes close to being substandard <cough....GM....cough>, another ride around the block (this time I grabbed radar detector from my car).
this car ain't bad!....wait, did I just say that out loud? <looks around>
phone rings, "hey guy, whatcha doing?....up for hitting some balls at the driving range?"
nothing!...I'm doing nothing! and I'm not looking at any cars!" <ducks behind the garage>
"ok...ah,...ok. um, you ok?"
I'm fine, I'll call you later.
<turn around to see the wife smirking>
"it's nice, isn't it?
so...now I'm actually looking at another Scion. figure if I buy one for the son he'll go away. and the new rule in the house is don't ask, don't tell!
only time will really tell if this thing holds up...but for the money, and the features included in that price I'm impressed. add that it's made by Toyota and I'm truly surprised that I don't see more of these on the road (and I've been looking lately, figure I'll feel better if I see more lunatics out there)
I thank you all for reading this and I beg you, please don't tell anyone of my secret fondness. I have an image to uphold.

Welcome Jay. That was by far the most entertaining intro I have read in a while
Scionitis is a VERY serious disease. There is no cure, but you are well on your way to managing the symptoms by registering here.

06-25-2010, 03:29 PM
It only gets worse too, first you buy the scion, then you add just this, then just that, and oh look, I need that too....
Welcome from the SoMich chapter.
Trust me, you don't know it yet, but you've been bitten by the Scion mod bug. The scenario starts a little different for each person, some occur very quickly and violently like a sledgehammer to the face, while others are much more subtle, almost unnoticed, but the outcome is all the same........you're infected and are destined to become a Scion tuner! Before you know it, you'll be buying an intake, exhaust, springs, etc., etc.
Little do you know it, but you've stumbled into a car that has a cult following of dedicated owners from all walks of life that number in the tens of thousands!
Welcome to the world of Scion! You're obviously off to a great start being that you've found Scikotics!
If there's anything any of us can do to help you unearth the hidden tuner inside you, just ask!

Hahaha I love it. We're glad to see you have come out of the closet. Now unfortunately coming out doesn't mean you're on the road to recovery, in fact it's the complete opposite. From here things just get worse. You'll buy a CAI and say this will be the only thing you do. Then you'll want an exhaust. That leads to lights and subs and that leads to a whole lot of extra $$ being spent on things your car really doesn't need. But guess what! You love every minute of doing it and hanging out with other Scion lovers. Just don't admit it to anyone, they won't understand.

Someone said daughter, and I am guessing she is 16-17 atleast. HAHAHA :hunter0cj:
Scions rule man! And it's fine I am a future police officer, I love domestics and motorcycles, etc etc. Driving a Scion doesn't let someone take away your "man card". Your good brother lol btw just kidding about the daughter thing, unless.......... oh nevermind!
the most descriptive and captivating intro i have read! Welcome From the Tulsa Chapter! Hope you enjoy your stay here!

Thanks for the gropping...er, I mean the welcome. Funny thing is, didn't realize while writing this post but pointed out by the beautiful wife that I usually drive about 90 to and from work everyday in the Buick and have never gotten a ticket. wife swears I wave hello to all the cops (which isn't true except for one...but we play golf together every other week).
I'm in that damn xD for 30 mins and get pulled....
so let's recap:
drive 90 in Buick and appear to be tax paying citizen and respectable and never get noticed by the city's finest
or......
get into a Scion and become next week's episode of COPS
maybe I should rethink the NOx kit

I have got a serious, and I mean a serious damn problem.....
you guys are joking about "ha ha...you got the Scion bug now!" and all that fanatic mantras and such......
took the xD to the dealership today for the little woman to see about maybe having a security system installed and made the mistake of seeing the 2011 Scion tC.....
if I pull the trigger and buy the damn thing I will never hear the end of it....from the wife OR you SOBs
here I was minding my own damn business and all of a sudden I find myself surrounded by deranged, rabid mental ward escapees....I think it's a plot...you bastards planted my wife on me to seduce me to the dark side

DO NOT BUY A CAR ALARM FROM A DEALERSHIP!!! Get ready for them to lube your ass whole with bronzing tanning lotion so after they get done pounding you, yuo can remember it with a orange ring around your anus.
Go to a car audio shop and ask for a Autopage RS730 with C3 function. (The new model). Do not buy the C3 but just get the alarm. It will be $300-$400 installed and have remote start, 1000ft paging, alarm, etc. with 2 extra buttons for functions!

ok, have a question for you guys (and since I'm new I wasn't exactly sure where to post this so if the mods need to move it please feel free).
doing some research on the tC and came upon this little tidbit of info and would like to have someone independently verify it. Wikipedia (I know, that's why I want outside verification) says that according to Consumers Reports, the xD was the MOST reliable vehicle sold in the United States in 2009.
if this is true, there is no way I'm gonna tell the wife. she's already smug enough considering she found this car, negotiated the sale, and purchased it all without me even knowing what she was doing. the fact I am beginning to really like it doesn't help matters......

I sell alarms, audio, video, etc. Aftermarket is probably my #1 choice. Scion/Toyota does sell an alarm for the car but its $500 installed and doesn't have half the features an aftermarket alarm does. That alarm I told you is my #1 seller.

I'm pretty much halfway between Charleston and Columbia....am interested in meeting members of both chapters (why do I have to pick only one chapter to join? couldn't I be the village idiot for both?).
if anyone from either chapter could message me with their meeting schedule I'd like to try and attend. I'd hate to apply to one and alienate the other, especially since I don't know anyone of either.
talked to the wife (she whom must be obeyed) about joining and she doesn't care which either, although she is leaning towards Charleston only because she's a beach girl having been born and raised in New Smyrna Beach, FL. and we go to Folly Beach every opportunity we get.
and again, I'd like to thank everyone for their welcomes. I found this site while doing research for the xD and joined almost immediately. don't quite know why, but something about the "vibe" of the site appealed to me.
who knows, maybe this is part of a midlife crisis of mine and you poor bastards get to watch me implode. me, driving an xD....who'd have thunk?

Eh, that won't do. You will have to buy that tC ... But I am partial because we own one. But, if you are claiming mid-life crisis what better way to prove that than with a tC which is the sportier Scion in the bunch.

07-01-2010, 08:32 AM
well....after a couple of test drives I'm leaning to NOT buying a tC. don't get me wrong, it would make a nice Knave delivery conveyance. it's fun to drive, yada, yada, yada.....and I had originally considered it because it loosely appeals to that "upstanding conservative" persona that I like to project. but it's too close to the Lacrosse.
let's put it this way....if I was driving, say a truck or suv, I'd have already signed the papers and be driving it right now. but so far I can't see reason enough to dump the Buick for a tC...
that being said, I'm having a blast taking the wife's (she who must be obeyed) xD for spins. and as I go thru all the different posts here on Scikotics, I keep wondering could a guy like me be happy with my own xD or...maybe a xB?
look, life's rough and I spend an amazing amount of time insuring my life is as stress free as possible. I enjoy having toys that makes Daddy happy and at peace. and for some damn reason these little cars strike a chord within me that I have difficulty explaining. driving the xD is cool, at least my definition of cool.
and I have to admit that I find myself envious. I envy those of you who are young and full of energy. I find myself starting to slow a bit (I'm not old damnit!) and more and more I find myself living vicariously thru my kids and it sucks....hard. that's why I still after all these years seek adrenaline rushes, anything to keep the juices flowing although the knee hurts, and I have to switch glasses at times, and all the other little things that proves God's got a sense of humor ("Take that Knave..let's see how ya handle losing your hair....that'll bring ya down a notch or two.").
I envy your talent. some of the things I see you scikos do with your rides is truly amazing. the art, the tuning, etc....I can't do that. yeah, I can pay somebody to do that. here....install those colored brake calipers, install that sound system, paint it with that shade of color, etc. but do it myself? I don't have the skill set. I seriously tip my hat to you kids.
the wife (she who must be obeyed) told me I should just go ahead and buy a used xB and make it a weekend project type of thing. slowly add this or change that and let it become a canvas of expression about me. (you'll notice she said xB....she put her hands on her hips, looked me square in the eye and said no....I can't have a xD. one per household. not saying anything more of the matter. period.)
I don't know....I just don't know. before all this I thought I had all the answers. hard to believe a little car could turn my life upside down. this is gonna be interesting, this little period of self discovery. you guys are either gonna see the little acorn grow into a mighty oak or watch me go down in flames. maybe I should sell tickets....it's gonna be a show.
thanks for listening....you guys are saving me a small fortune on therapy.
jahoppe50
07-01-2010, 10:45 AM
If your looking for an adrenaline rush then buy an xB... Then your artistic juices will get flowing and you'll have your own tricked out car to be driving to the golf course instead of driving the Buick and wishing you were driving your WIFE's car lol. But your awesome and a blast to have on the site. So...
WELCOME!
DeadCannon
07-01-2010, 10:46 AM
Take your time and think it through. A nicely planned and executed xB can play a lot of roles. (that spelling looks wrong but my brain can't think of an alternative) A good suspension can have function and form. Throw on some nice rims and it's a show car. Put some good tires on the rims and take a run down some back roads and it'll twist your face into an evil grin.

i have to say if the tc's didnt exhist i'd rock a gen2 xB. they have alot of room, and i mean alot of it. sadly a stock gen2 xB will out run a tC...

LOVE the story, welcome to the forums! I'm a 40+ with an xB, and it was the opposite with me... I bought it, loved it, and the wife looked at that "tiny little thing" and shook her head! Now... SHE'S looking into buying our 2nd xB! LOL
Sure, it's not as tall as an F350 4x4 longbed crewcab, but it will hold just as many fellas and get us there in the same amount of time with only 1/4 the gas! ;)
Shadow Box
07-01-2010, 06:10 PM
Hmm.. So no xD for you, and the tC didn't get you excited enough to get one? There is always an xA, or the xB...heck, look into the iQ?? If you end up leaning more tward the xB tho they are great on gas, and hella roomy. I wanted a tC, tho, with my first kid on the way and knowing there was going to be A LOT of things to haul and I was not going to lug a car seat in and outta the back of one (I admit, I'm far to lazy) I went for the 1st gen xB (Not to mention a close friend has one, and he got me partial to them). If you want 'get up and go' they aren't that great, unless you have some mods done, the 1.5L stock couldn't out run a tC even if it thought it could, I tried :(. If you want something that can haul, and haul a lot of weight? The xB for sure. I drove to Tennessee to get some military gear for my husband and weight it at a truck stop; ended up loading close to 900Lbs. I couldn't even fit 2 fingers in the rear wheel well with it loaded down. Haha, I love the 'She who must be obeyed'.
