View Full Version : Looking for Headunits With Wired Remotes

I am working on headunit research for my car for a little project I will be doing late winter/early spring. One of the primary things I am looking for is the headunit's ability to have a wired remote control.
So far, Sony and Pioneer are the only two companies I have found with decent wired remotes. Several other companies say they have them, but they actually run off the steering wheel controls of the car. I have an '05 tC without the steering wheel controls so that limits me.
Car audio is definately not my specialty so I am hoping some of you guys can help me out.

have you looked into trying to find an 06 steering wheel?

I can get an 06 steering wheel, but I hate the way they look (no offence to you guys). I like my clean wheel. I am very picky about my mods which is why I want to find a wired remote that I can put where I want it.

What about the Avic-D3 from Pioneer?

how will a wireless one not work?
but i am thinking even so, you could figure what wires are extended to make the 06 steering wheel control work on the stock harness and then match them to the 05 harness and extend them yourself to the wired remote thing your wanting.
or i could be completely wrong in this

I want to keep the cost of the actual headunit down and I won't be able to see the screen anyway.

The head unit is going to be hidden. It will be reachable from the driver's seat, but not easily.
I mainly want the remote to control volume and muting the sound for when I get phone calls. I usually listen to my Sirius so I don't really need to track through songs or anything like that.

I really like those remotes, spendy as hell though. $200-250 for a remote seems a bit steep. At least it gives me another option though. I'll have to see if I have room in my gauge cluster to mount one of those. I like how they make them the size of a standard gauge. Thanks Tyler.

I may have to do that. Never been there before but I have heard a lot about them. Hopefully, they'll be able to give me some good info.

The Clarion remotes only work with their marine radio's :(, and they are quite large in diameter. The shop I manage is a Clarion dealer, so I know this first hand. They are cool though, I recently did a system in a '66 Caddy factory limo for a customer and made a custom mount and attached it to the rear of the front seat so the passengers in the back can control the radio and volume. Another alternative is maybe mount the radio in your glovebox or under the seat and use a piece by a company named PAC, that is an IR repeater/extender. Works pretty sweet. I'll have to find my pics of the Caddy and post up.

get a IR port extension... ive seen it before... box goes infront of the radio IR... then you run the wire somwhere hidden in the car where the remote would work

That one is for home audio use. here is the PAC link for the 12v version.

Find a car stereo shop that carries PAC products, or one that can get products from AAMP of America. They have one available. Part#PVIRT

if you look "inside" the the area that the steering wheel is in front of you can see the small blue buttons of the remote that was mounted to the left of about where the drivers left knee would be
