CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Dec 6 (Reuters) - NASA officials worried about tricky fuel sensor readings postponed a planned launch of the space shuttle Atlantis on Thursday, saying it could not go before Saturday at the soonest.

They said they believed a wiring problem caused two of four fuel tank sensors to fail and were trying to determine if it would be possible to either fix the problem or launch the mission safely anyway.

"We no longer have an opportunity to launch tomorrow. Our earliest opportunity that we are working to is Saturday," said LeRoy Cain, head of the shuttle Mission Management Team.

NASA has until Dec. 13 to launch the 11-day mission this year and take the European Space Agency's Columbus science laboratory to the International Space Station. Atlantis must have time to leave the station before the angle of the sun's rays change enough to overheat the orbiter.

The weather was fine and everything had seemed ready for the third on-time launch this year. But on Thursday morning two of the four engine cutoff, or ECO, sensors inside the liquid hydrogen section of the tank failed a routine prelaunch check.

"We have these sensors at the bottom of the tank, kind of like the fuel tank in your vehicle, and they tell us when we are about to run out of fuel," Cain told reporters.

The shuttle uses more than 500,000 gallons (2.2 million litres) of frozen hydrogen and oxygen to get into orbit. If the engines keep firing after the tank is empty, it could spark an explosion.

Engineers and other experts have been meeting to discuss the problem and were ordered to go home and sleep on it.

"I can almost guarantee you we will have some new thinking, too, after we let this team go home and rest," Cain said.

The first mission after the 2003 loss of the shuttle Columbia and its seven astronauts, in July 2005, was delayed 13 days due to sensor glitches. Cain said the sensor system has parts added over the years to boost safety.

ESA has waited more than five years for this launch. Its initial launch was postponed when NASA grounded the shuttle fleet for safety upgrades after the Columbia disaster.

Germany's Hans Schlegel and Leopold Eyharts of France are scheduled to join five U.S. astronauts on this mission -- commander Stephen Frick, pilot Alan Poindexter, flight engineer Rex Walheim, Leland Melvin and Stanley Love.

They will help install Columbus, a 27-foot-(8.2-metre)long, 15-foot-(4.6-metre)diameter laboratory set up for experiments in biology, physics and medicine. (Reporting by Maggie Fox and Irene Klotz)

Damn, I only had it 4 1/2 months... Funnier yet, I just dropped a bunch of money to put new rubbers on it already (yesterday), cuz I had to.... I guess I should lay off the burn outs... lol Soo much fun though!!! Just over 9500 miles on the clock, and new tires already.... jeez!!! The old tires were starting to bald out, expecially one of them, was practically a slick.... That one was starting to leak even.... Caused me to have to drive home from the last Orlando Chapter meet @ the speed limit :-(... That SUCKS!!!! lol Expecially when I drive Mach 5 everywhere I go...

And they took forever to put them on, I ended up missing the Deland show I was looking forwards to going to... I also found out my alignment was out of wack.... That happened a long time ago when I was driving down marrell rd. while it was dark in a poorly lit area, and hit a rock layed out in the road right where my tires would roll over.... Didn't see it until it was too late to swerve, and had to replace that rim.... I got that fixed now too...

Yeah, I've always thought that Friday shouldbe part of the weekend... but after a three day weekend, won't we need one day to recover from it? So we make Monday a transitional day of no work, WITH PAY, to transition back to the workweek of Tuesday thru Thursday. So I think everyone will support this but Business OWNERS.

We still need to have a robust economy to fuel itself, and all the comapnies that we work for need to MAKE MONEY to pay us, and all that stuff, so that's why.... But still a four day workweek of 10 hour days and then 3 off is what I'd prefer anyway....

hahaha thants cool. I love to drive too, especially my car, but even other cars. It's a good thing too, cuz I drive for a living, 125 miles a day through the SF East bay area....

Incredibly beautiful area, especially if you like crisp and DRY weather!! Rents and housing costs are through the roof though... but I think it's worth it!!

That's my WHOLE POINT!!! Over here the weather is TOTALLY comfortable, even HOT weather, cuz there's NO humidity.... I didn't realize how much I truly appreciated it till I went to Asylum this year and experienced the humidity that most of the nation endures regularly!! I have a new appreciation for where I live!!!

Wow, I just looked up the temp here online, and it says ONLY 73, but my own thermometor in the shade here says 83, but in the SUN it feel preety warm... Today is the first warm day though, in a heat wave that's gonna last through the weekend... Hotest places inland may reach 115 by Fri or Sat. Not nearly that hot here where I live though...
