I have an idea for the BP oil disaster but BP has not sent me the forms they said they would when I called them... My idea is to float a large old metal ship which has had its deck cut out (save the support structures) out to the broken pipe, capsize it and sink it over the site. the oil should collect inside the upside down ship, like a bell jar, since the oil is lighter than water. Drill holes and attach pipes to the apex of the upside down ship and pump out the oil that has gathered there. I drew a quick diagram of what I mean. I hope you can tell what's going on despite the quality... what do you think? Any one know how to get this put into motion?

They pretty much tried that with the cement cap. I think it's a matter of things getting tricky when you're a mile deep.

i agree with colbert and we put a giant pineapple over it and stick a sponge in it.

no but seriously. it is rather difficult to do anything due to it being so deep. The pressure is very high, the current is also a factor and on top of that you have to go through so many channels to get anything approved.

essentially, thats what they are doing right now, They cut the pipe, and stick a cap on top of it, and process as much of the oil as they can, while the oil they can't suck up flows out of the bottom since they can't get a perfect seal.

Same thing with as your boat idea, the issue is that the oil is just flowing faster than they can process it, and its almost impossible for them to get a perfect seal around the pipe at that depth.

BP has plans to build a relief well and then close the current one under the oceans surface. I think the bigger issue is how they are going to clean up the oil that has floated up to the surface.
