:blink:i bought my 05 xB in Sept. I have been itchin to paint some things: engine cover, some of the interior and want some advice. i am more worried about how to go about the engine cover. i dont want to remove anything that would require some automotive knowledge like timing and such.
some key things i would like to know are:
removal
preperation of parts
what kind of primer...if any
do i need to adhesive promoter
do i need plastic paint
how many layers
do i need clear coat or is that just for looks
and any other advice.
i've looked through a lot of threads on different sites and they touch on the above things, but some say you dont need to. i guess i'm looking for people who have done it. know the results, failures and successes.
also, i cant find touch up paint for my Blue onyx pearl. i want to repaint my skirts and cant find my color. i thought i found it (dark metallic blue) but it was too dark and there is no blue metallic.
thanks:blink:

im also going to paint some things in mycar i went and bought some paint from autozone...im waiting till it gets a lil warmer to do this or until i can get a heater for my garage since it will stick better when its warmer....ok you dont need a primer...you just need something to clean the pieces very well...duplicor has wipes that clean the surface before painting...you do not need plastic paint......and the amount of layers is up to you...whatever looks best...hopes this helps a lil bit anymore questions just ask

There's actually 4 10mm acorn nuts holding the engine cover on. Prep with acetone, prep-all, etc. I like to use the clear adhesion promoter in place of primer. Mask off with some painter's tape, and spray.

thats look awesome, great job on the painting....
so we should prep with acetone, use painters tape to mask what we need to ...
should krylon spray paint be used ? whats the recommended paint to use on the engine cover ?

if you want it to look like ur car for the best finish i say clean wit wax and grease remover, scuff wit red scotchbrite, clean again, spray wit plastic adhesive promoter, then spray ur base let cure(15min), then hit it wit a couple coats of clear, wen cured color sand and buff. it seems like a lot but it really isnt. or you can do wat they say. watever works

To make things a little more simple:
1) Make sure what you are painting is clean.
2) It definately helps, but is not necessary, to apply an adhesive promoter and/or scuff up the object with a scotchbrite or something.
3)Apply paint.
4)Apply additional coats to liking if you want.
5)Touch up where necessary.
*You need to make sure that if you are painting something that is in the engine bay or merely has the potential to get hot, that you use a high heat type of paint. Autozone carries many different colors and types. Cans labeled Engine Enamel and anything labeled for high heat work well for things such as engine parts, calipers, anything that gets hot. I typically use Duplicolor products as well.

i have heard people say you need high heat paint and others say you dont. i have heard people say that if it is the engine cover it does not get hot enough to warrent special paint. I'm so confused.
will aresol spray paint work well or should i consider getting a paint sprayer?
also what would be best method to paint and item, flat on its back, upright...etc?
thanks again

Heres the thing. High heat won't hurt. Your engine cover might now get that hot but its better to just use the high heat just in case you know?
All you gotta do is go to autozone or some place and get the aresol Duplicolor High heat or Engine enamel can in whatever color you want for basic colors.
Just hold it in any way to minimize any runs and get a nice even coat.

i went to the autozone in the area and they had three high heat colors..chrome, gold and red.....not much of a selection. i dont think there are a lot of people painting things that require that paint in my area.
thank you every one for all the advice. i will heed it all when i finally start these projects. its so frigid cold right now. paint would freeze before it would hit the part. lol

I would just take it a paint shop and have it done perfesionally. Ive always said you pay for what you get. The end result will come out flawless and extreamly glossy just like your cars paint job. Cant go wrong this route.

it would be great if i could just take it in but the main thing is i want to do it myself. this is my vehicle and well i cant do much worse. i figure if i mess up too bad, sand it and repaint. i plan to start small and then as i get better, do bigger.
now for the exterior:
i'm sad because my front end is white now. nto from paint, but lack of. i have been trying to get a hold of this guy who can supposibly do a great buffin job on scratches. well after 3 months of calling him and him never calling back i have given up.
I need to either take it in a hope that i get a great repaint or do it myself. i cant stand having a 3 year old vehicle with the paint of a 10 yr old one. money is the main factor. i dont make much, im a paper carrier for gosh sakes.
if there are any places near St.Cloud MN someone can refer me to, i would love it. like i said i have only seen and heard bad things. an estimate would be a start.
thanks again
