Ok... so I have a moon roof on my first gen. I bought it used and the previous owner had it installed. For over a year now I've had problems with is so today I finally found someone will the balls to take a look at it...

Moon/Sun Roofs on Gen 1s are rare so it took me a while to find someone willing to look at it. Here are some pics of me and my buddy Travis ripping it all apart...

We still haven't diagnosed the EXACT problem as far as electrical. The leaking problem was a bit more obvious...

Note: all the filter lines going down the A and B pillars. One reason it leaked was the fact that the xB was is so square that the flat surface did not allow for the water to filter DOWNward across the roof so there was build up.

The motor worked perfectly fine. Because of the water build up we are theorizing that it may have shorted an electrical... See more component in either the switches or the electrical box itself. I'm going to look to see if those can be ordered online. Switching them may fix the problem.

Anyone have experience with messing with these? Suggestions, questions, comments? All feedback welcome. :p

Did you break man windshields? I heard that's why not many have sunroofs.

A lot of xBs have problems with moonroofs because of the structure of the vehicle. From what I was able to view the fact that their is no arch in the roof makes for a more difficult mounting technique that required more supports. That's why I hear about a lot of xB sunroofs that sag. Also the water lines that filter down the pillars go straight across the roof because of that same reason. There is no arch to let natural gravity filter the water downward into the lines so build up occurs in the actual cavity of the roof.

In other words the windshield has absolutely nothing to do with it. The only reason an xB has sun roof problems is quite literally because it is a BOX shape.

Nice sunroof. Ive thought about having one installed since i bought my box last year. Just dont want someone ripping the interior of my box apart.

Its REALLY super easy to take out the headliner yourself. But yeah, if you get one they will definitely have to modify your headliner to be able to make everything custom fit. As well as having to completely saw off some of the original brackets that support your roof and build in new ones. Once you look at one thats already been installed you see all the work that goes into it.

I've honestly yet to hear of a gen1 xB NOT having problems with one. Everyone I've come across has had some sort of problem but that doesn't mean the problems are not able to be resolved. If you do make sure you find a well noted place to install and preferably one that is experienced in installing them in the gen1s because how straight the roof is makes it different/harder than other cars.

But just think long and hard before a mod like this and BE PREPARED! lol
