View Full Version : Speaker Input

So after I do my coils, I'll be changing the rest of my speakers. Just wanting some input on good component sets and which brands are better, etc. I was looking at the Alpine SCS-600c for my front speakers/tweeters but not sure about the rear speakers. I want something that's going to produce really good mids to fill in the void from my highs to my subs.

i say match your mids highs and subs. plus Fish can probably getcha a hookup on alpine too.

There is no need to match all 3 (highs, mids and subs) or fronts, back, and subs. Some companies make better mids and highs than they do their subs, and vise versa. For interior speakers, you want a good quality set. A good set should give you clear sound quality at almost all levels of volume. I would look at a couple online retailers such as www.OnlineCarStereo.com (http://www.OnlineCarStereo.com) and www.SonicElectronix.com (http://www.SonicElectronix.com) and read customer reviews.

Dead thread jack!
I'm thinking about leaving my back seats out and replacing them with a sub box, probably a couple 8s or 10s. Thoughts?

unless you do a custom install with a trim piece twice the size of the box, it's kinda pointless to only run a couple 8s or 10s in the place of a back seat....now....if you were to run a couple 8s or 10s at the top, and then did a cool backlit amp install in the center with some component sets running down each side, that'd be tits.
And I didnt notice this thread before, but yeah, Josh, I can hook you up on Alpine. We dont stock component sets of anything tho, so I'll have to order it and be here in a couple days. If I were you, I'd run some Type S components, and hardwire in a KTP-445....it's an inline mini-amp. I've heard it myself and it works pretty good for the price. It wires into your deck harness. And doubles the RMS that your deck is putting out.

10 on each side and the amp in middle if you want it to be simple.

How hard would it be to go back and add the mids later?
Rags2Bitches
05-07-2010, 08:30 AM
about as hard as changing your brake pads and then going back and turning your rotors later.

Didn't think it would be hard, but I'm an audiotard. I'll probably come see you today after lunch. Trying to decide what I'm doing.
You can do anything you want really, the limits are your imagination, and your budget...
Pete, iaminsider runs Focal components front and rear, and they sound as good or better than anything I have heard...
We built a sub box in the hatch that holds 2 - 12" subs and fills the hatch area. Currently doing a rear seat delete with a box featuring his amps and crossovers, you could certainly opt to put the subs there with amps and could make it fit and have a level surface from the hatch floor all the way to the edge that would have been the rear seat bottom...

I VERY strongly suggest Focal componants, but they are going to run you a pretty penny.

ANY good speaker is gonna run you pretty good. The best bang for your buck that we have at the store right now is Kicker 6.5 coaxials at 49.00.....if you're going for sound quality, I highly recommend Alpine Type R coaxials or Type S components. The type R's are actually in BJ's Prelude, which is broke down in the bay behind where I sit, so you can hear them lol. The type S components I had in my Montero Sport and they sounded awesome. If you want a really good sound, definitely go with a components set. Also pick up a set of our Quantum tweeters. They're $20 and are WELL worth the money. The Prelude has those installed in it as well for you to hear. We all have them in our dailys.

focal vs kicker? ----------- no comment
adding mids and highs later wont be that big of a deal if you plan ahead. you could get a nice 4 channel amp and run the subs off the rear and later add a comp set to the front.

Focal vs kicker isn't even a fair fight.
dirtyred
05-07-2010, 03:11 PM
kinda depends on the fight but i dont see how the 2 could evenly be compared. they're on opposite sides of the car audio world. focal is for audiophiles and kicker is for everyone else.

if the customer's buying on price point, they're gonna go for the Kicker over the Focals....another part of that is which model Kicker vs. which model Focal? Cause it isnt really fair to try and compare Kicker DS coaxials to Focal K2 component set, cause Focal will run circles around Kicker all day long.

Fish directed me to 2 JL 10w0, a JL J2 250.1, and later on add a set of JL mids and highs to the trim panels.

Yeah the thread had died but it's back to life ha. I'll definitely be finishing out my system as soon as I can. I will probly do that next thing, right after asylum hopefully. I gotta build up my bank account again, let it get too low here lately. And Fish before I do get some I'll try sometime to listen to some of those you guys have installed. I'd like to go with alpine, I was looking at the Type S comps on sonic one day and those seemed good. My question is should I do comps in the front and back? because I didn't see those in the size I need for the back.. or front, idk maybe vice versa. I need a 6.5 and a 5.25 or something.
Also will probly upgrade my tweets while iam at it. Is that $20 per tweet or a pair?
Rags2Bitches
05-07-2010, 11:02 PM
it's per pair. We'll install them for $30 for ya too. We stock 5.25 and 6.5 Type S coaxials, and we can get them in components pretty easily. Shouldnt be any problem. If I were you, I'd do components all around. If it's gonna be a little expensive for you, run components in front and coaxials in the back. That's how my Montero was ran.

I have fosgate power series 6.5 two ways, with two set of tweeters, one in front and back. I think i have the quantum tweeters, not really sure. I do know i thought i had them in a good spot until Mary broke the driver side one bracket, still works and my nephews car seat got hooked on driver side passenger seat, still works also.

I put the Quantum tweeters in my Sable, one of our installers has 2 sets in his Liberty, BJ has them in his Prelude, John has 2 sets in his Sport Trac, and Frosty just sucks. lol

forget 2 10's. do 4 15's instead. if you did 10's though these would be cool to mix in. http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_25310_Cadence_ZRS103i.aspx

$100 for the set....we sell Type S coax's for $120 all day long (which are less) so you're saving about $50 off of what we'd price it to a regular customer.

I'll probly end up going with 2 type s comps, what would I have to do to modify the rear speaker for a 6.5 to fit because I believe it is a 5.5 or something. Or maybe the front is. Idk but yeah, basically make a new baffle like I'll have to for the front?
I'll probly be powering them with a Hifonics ZXi 6410.
Then after that focus on getting a new deck.

I ordered baffles for my 6.5's to fit in the rear. I got em off of ebay I think....
DeadCannon

IIRC Doc Iso makes em

just cut an adapter out of mdf, not hard. 6.5's fit in the back with no problems.
Kid Morbid
05-10-2010, 09:37 PM
Yeah some mdf is the way I'd go. Rather have it than a plastic baffle of sorts that could just rattle ;) Maybe coat it with some resin to make sure it's waterproof just to be on the safe side.
Getting a ballpark price of what it'll cost me to get this set up and it'll be what I save for after asylum.

you wont need to resin the rear but def do the fronts. the front doors of scions get wet and hold water like a bathtub. you might even invest in some of the xtc foam speak covers. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_237XT65/XTC-6-1-2-Speaker-Baffles-3-1-4-depth.html?search=xtc&ssi=0
