I found a buddy with a garret turbo. It has about 15k miles on it and is selling to me for $1500. All it needs is a new piggy back ($500).

He is a mechanic and rebuilt the turbo with new bearings and gasket and also cleaned it. I was worried about the shaftplay but with the bearings being replaced I guess it's fine. He will put everything is for me all for $1500 here or some pics..

He had it on his tc making 220hp at 6lbs of boost.
My questions are, is 15,000 miles on a garret turbo too much? taken the fact it has been rebuilt with new intercooler and pipes.

and how long will it last me.

My question is why did he rebuild it with only 15k miles on it? running 6psi is nothing. what size is the turbo? don't say t3/t4 that means absolutly nothing. what wastegate do I see there and what kind of fmic is the core and what not? If you can run 18psi for way more than 15k miles on a lil mitsu 14b turbo and be fine than why the hell on 6psi did he rebuild this at 15k makes me wonder. unless he just got bored

Looks like a Turbosmart WG and a Greddy RS BOV. Kit is in semi-descent shape. WITH install 1500 isnt that bad since I am guessing you don't have the knowledge to do it yourself. The price is a tad high and a kit without management or injectors should be under 1000, but if he is installing and tuning it works out. In all honesty ask for the price to be 1000 with install, the Treadstone kits were never really that expensive. That looks like a Ball Bearing turbo, is it?

A side note is that with that large of an intercooler low boost will produce less HP and the WG is going to be taxed pretty heavily. Also you are going to have to remove the crash bar.

yeah it does look like the crash bar will need to be taken off. also your bumper might need to be cut for the intercooler pipes

I take what I said back, you can work around that crash bar, there are tC's out there that have. Good Luck :)

You could cut the crash bar and weld supports over the top of the intercooler. Being that size it is actually less functional for our car than the smaller high density I/Cs. Unless you start running higher boost then it gets better. I am pretty sure it's the old treadstone kit... You should have 420cc injectors with it and they came unmanaged. With the banjo fitting on the front like that it really looks like a BB turbo. In which case they don't last as long and if he didn't have it professionally rebuilt it will never hold very well. That's the reason people do CHRA swaps on BB turbos.

Cons:
Price is high
BB turbo garage rebuilt (never good)
Crash bar needs to be cut or removed

Pros:
Better spool
Bigger I/C is great for mega high HP builds

honestly i would just wait around and maybe check on scion life, i've seen turbonetics kits for about a grand sell on there and i've seen p tuning kits sell for around 1500 for everything but the piggybacks harness..
