ok so the other day me and austin tried to cover my headliner, well the material i got was like a vinyl with a cotton backing, i thought that it would be perfect, WRONG. we couldnt get it to curve with the curves in the front and in the grab bar sections. luckly we only did like 2 feet, cause i would have been pissed if we did the whole thing and it did this. so the next day i ended up pulling up the bad parts and tried to reglue them and slowly smooth them out but WRONG again, the material just wont go and i have 3 yards of it.
So if anybody has done their headliner tell me what kind of material you used or what is good to use, also GLUE what kinds are good i used 3m super 77, but ive heard of using contact cement and spraying it on, let me know quick cause im wanting to get this done before the 29th.

see which do you think would be better the suede or the vinyl, cause i need it to get around the curves in front, do you have any pics of your front that i can see of the suede.

If you are bent on doing it yourself, you should use the 3m 90. You can also try and pm zereaux or rhino, they did rhino's tC with suede.
I did mine with velvet so it stretches and it came out good. are you spraying bot the headliner and the vinyl, because you should be.

yeah we did but the cotton on the back of the material soaks it up and makes the vinyl on top wrinkle

i used to do headlines some.... you have to use contact cement (sprayable) do a light coat on both the material and the headliner form let set a few mins and then spray both again. if you dont do a double coat you will be doing again in a few months. the suff in a can is worthless and wont hold it must be contact cement!!!!

One of our guys, Keith, does a lot of interior stuff and I saw him do ChefBamm's headliner the other day. He was using contact cement that you have to put on with a brush. It was the made by DAP and came in a red and white paint can. He said you can get it at home depot. If you use that, make sure you're in a very well ventilated area, we were getting high from the fumes that were 20' away! lol

ive heard of spraying it thru a gun though what kind of gun, couldnt you almost use like a pressure sprayer like for a deck, or is it a low pressure gravity feed gun that you hook up to air compressor. i got material today, decided to go with black suede, its like the other material i used. and i got contact cement sounded like thats what everybody that doesnt want to recover it again in a month used. so now i just need a sprayer, and then its time to get HIgh!

Bryce, make sure you let the contact cement completely dry on both surfaces before putting them together. Once you touch the two dry surfaces together, they won't let go.
Contact cement is super thick so not sure what kind of sprayer would be able to handle it. I've got a paint pressure tank that you could use. You probably could just run a hose from the tank, put a small needle valve and then some type of a spray nozzle on it. Slowly open the needle valve to regulate flow and spray away. It would be messy, but should work. . .

If you plan on spraying it, the pressure tank (2-gallon pots, etc.) works great but will be hard to clean out and spray paint through it again. We would always buy cheap paint guns or use the old paint guns for contact cement and keep our Binks guns for our paints. This stuff will really mess with a paint sprayer.
You may want to pick up a cheap gun (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=220964-1126-KBS53000AV&lpage=none) and a air compressor. You can find a much cheaper no-name gun...the link is for clarity only. Just a cheapo gun, no HPLV stuff or anything fancy. Get a gallon of 100% Mineral Spirits for cleaning up with.
The DAP contact cement is thicker than most CC, but it does the job. CC comes in two types, brush (thick) and spray (thin), but you can only get the thick at Lowes or Home Depot. Look up "cabinet Supplies" in your phone book and look for the "key words" Formica or Wilsonart or Nevamar or Pioneer or high pressure laminates and call them. They will sell a gallon container of the real CC that you can get in thin. If no cabinet suppliers are listed, look under cabinets and for the same "key words" and call a few. They will certainly sell you a gallon, just bring a glass or metal container, as they will most likely being pouring from a 5 - 55 gallon drum and the stuff will melt milk jugs and stuff like that.

No problem. My garage is pretty well empty now, but I still have the compressor. You are more than welcome to come over and use it. Just let me know when you want to.

It would probably be easier to drag my compressor to your house than for you to drag your headliner to my house. It would fit in the back of a B if you put the seats down.

your headliner is fabric..... when you put fabric to that.... it doesnt work... It works great on plastic panels... or when you strip the exsisting fabric...

yeah i have been checking that topic and been leaving posts but he doesnt really explain the spraying part, i know you have to go little sections at a time almost split it up into 4 parts, front middle x2 then the rear or should we start in the rear and work our way to the front since its a bitch to do, ive actually found out more on headliner from people on our site, and there is a guy in ft wayne that will do them for 20 or more a yard but i dont want to pay any more, ive done the rest of my car by myself or with you and travis, we can do this for sure.

Since you are on the headliner retouching subject. I was wondering if anyone could point me to the location of the how to, about taking the tC headliner down. I know most of the access points but would appreciate the link to the DIY. I did search just new to this forum and lost a lot of scion forum links.
Thank you.
