VVT-i stands for variable valve timing (http://www.justanswer.com/questions/162nu-what-is-the-meaning-of-vvt-i-system#) with intelligence, this is a hydraulic controlled system that advances and retards engine timing by turning the camshafts, it is controlled by oil pressure to the vvt selonoids and the ECM has the capability to monitor and change the output. Older inport vehicles has VVT but no intelligence, these newer systems are more efficient and powerful because they do not operate off preset values, they are "intelligent" and respond to live data for the current situation. This provides you with better fuel mileage, better horsepower and cleaner burning emissions.

I'm guessing that since it says camshaftS it's both? Not a real clear answer.
