invest in a small fiberglass roller!
It will help with the bubbles and laying it up... just soak in acetone at night
Didn't I see this pic on fiberglass forums?

thats sweet ya i got my stuff from there too you got any plans on the way ur going to do it
Oh yeah...but i'm adding a twist to this one. It'll have a pair of forward facing Kenwood 5 way 6x9's in it.
The back stock speakers suck ass so bad that I added a pair of 6x9's in my hatch...

They sound really decent and depending on the music you'd swear I had an amp & sub. But I digress....
I wasn't going to post anything till I had least had this covered but I've been too busy for the past week to do anything with it so I'll go ahead and give you peek at what I've got done so far.

well i definitly cant wait to see what its going to look like yea i dont have much time to work on mine either thats y its taking me so long i get to work on it like once a week if that
I hope to have this thing covered by next weekend. Originally I ordered 2 linear yards of 3/4 oz mat thinking that would be enough but once I unfolded it I quickly realized I should have got 3 x's that amount. I've got another 6 yards that should be here tomorrow. I'm going to give the B-440 a try and see if it's as good as everyone says it is. I bought a roller as well so hopefully I can avoid the bubbles.
We've got a car show Saturday and maybe I'll be able to work on this some on Sunday.
Once this one is done, I have a couple of 10" Alpine E series laying around that need to go in mine....haven't come up with a design for that one yet.
I'm anxious to see yours once it's sanded and filled. What are you going to cover your's with?

yea me too ima touch up some spots and then ima lay the first layer of filler on hopefully this weekend im planning on painting it but it depends on how good i fill it cuz if it looks like shit ima cover it in leather instead
i also have to figure out how ima build my amp rack
that B440 its some good stuff i ended up ordering 10 yards of mat so i didnt run out ill send some more pics if i do it this weekend

dang how did u fit thoes in the rear hatch? did u have to cut out some of the cross braces?
dang how did u fit thoes in the rear hatch? did u have to cut out some of the cross braces?
No, the braces are intact. I made 1.5" MDF spacers bolted to the 1/4" MDF hatch cover. There isn't a lot of room but they clear without a problem. I covered the magnets with this
http://www.builderdepot.com/PLUMBSHOP_20/prodimg/1760400.JPG
They are 3/32" 6x6" gasket rubber sheets because they are so close to the braces.

lol yea it does suck
I wish I hadn't of touched the box last night. I didn't get to work on it Tues so I tried to make up for it last night and had a hard time w/ the router and messed up my speaker ring. It's not bad but because the lip isn't real thick in front it shows. Hopefully once the glass is on there it will be fine.
I should have it wrapped by this weekend. I'll post more pics once I get some new batteries for the camera.

oh hell..I got some new pix and forgot to upload..my bad. This is as far as I've got as of last weekend. My fiance and I have been trying like hell to plan a small quick wedding due to various family health problems and her upcoming surgery so I haven't had any time to work on it in the past couple weeks. Good news is that we got married last night (FINALLY!) and her mom although going through chemo and sick as hell managed to bring herself to the church.
Anyways,...here's some more pics.

Looking very good, and as someone who is also doing their first box (albeit a MUCH more simple design), I can agree that you can't be too stressed over the minor imperfections, rack them up as 'learning curve' and move on to fix them in the next one (;
Again, nice job so far, can't wait to see when completed.

Thanks man....I got out my FG roller and played around with the sag a bit, and actually had it looking not to bad. It was then that I realized that the 2 sides so don't match. One side (RT) looks great, but the LT side is way wrong. I'm gonna have to pull the fabric on that side and rewrap it....dammit.
I knew this design was gonna be a bitch to get straight.

Yea when doing a fleece layer you want to make sure to strtech that stuff as much as possible... and line or bumpes means it needs to be stretched more.... all good ... Looks good

Dang Patrick you are sneaky, I did not know you was doin this. Looks good for a first time job. The fiberglass box i want to make requires me finding a wrecked xB and getting parts. Wish i knew where one was close to here. This is cool though can't wait to see more pics.

Turns out it was a combination of things. One, not having pulled it tight enough in the back, and Two, not pulling it in the right direction to match the other side.
It's all good though, I spent a couple hours pulling staples and ripping the material off. Turns out I didn't have quite enough left to redo it and had to make a quick trip back to Hancock's...this particular material is not fleece but a combo of spandex, cotton and something else and it's been discontinued...luckily they had a couple yards left in blue. Got it rewrapped, resined and got the 1st layer of glass on last night.
I'll get some pics up tonight.

What kind of box are you looking to do? I can't have something like this in mine as I can't afford to loose the floor space...am always hauling something. I've got a pair of Alpine 10" E-series subs that I want to put in and think I'll end up having to make enclosures that will fit in the very back side windows. If I do that though I'll have to install an external antenna...maybe one of an xa. I'm still thinking on it.

Why an external antenna? can't you Just glass around the plug or something ? I want my subs on the ceiling or around the windows too, but i need some extra c pillars in case i F*** up i still got my old ones to put back in.

I don't think you can put that kind of current (from the sub magnet) that close to the antenna's which are in the back window without interference. I've read where other people have done it and said they cannot get any radio reception afterwards...I listen to my radio all the time.
I'd like to have an extra set of C pillars as well as I'd like to modify those and can leave mine in while I work on the system. I still need to get an amp so mine's going to be awhile before I can do it.

Aye, have also heard numerous comments to indicate that covering up those windows trashes the stock antenna's radio reception.
Alrighty then..
I was able to get most of my first layer of glass down the other night. I've seriously under estimated how much material I need for this thing and need to order a couple more gallons of resin and I think another 3-4 yards of mat. All in all I think it's coming along great...got few little air pockets that I was able to knock down with 100 grit on a da.

Not a problem Donnie. I've been studying on the fiberglass forum for months now and have learned a ton of stuff. Seeing the proper way to do things from the pro's and knowing what the best products to use make a serious difference in how your project is going to turn out.
I've got a table saw, circular saw, sweet ass jig saw and can get her dad's router. The supplies are pretty cheap too..that is if you don't build something as big as this.

Thanks you guys, I really appreciate the compliments and comments.

Cool. I have been studying fiberglass for a while too. But have never gotten the chance to try it out, guess i am too scared. The thing i am worried about is the mixture of resin and stuff. Cause it says to much or to little and it doesn't work right. When i get ready i will get with ya.
I've got 2 catalyst charts hanging on the wall above my bench that are pretty accurate in addition, the cups you get with the MEKP (hardner) are graduated in Drams, CC's, Oz's & Tsp...you really can't go wrong.
I mixed up a 16oz batch last night that took 5cc's of MEKP. I worked for about 45mins before it started to gel on me...but I was down to the bottom of the cup by then.
