you should spray since it's only black but you should do something sick and get a cool fabric for the headliner

I sprayed mine with the fabric paint just because it was easier. It took about 4 cans to do the headliner black. Its not too bad, but I am going to wrap it when it warms up because it needs to match my pillars because those are in black vinly

Upholster it, you'll be a lot happier. The paint will make the headliner hard and just does not look right. If you do your own headlienr, use contact cement and not the spray can stuff. You'll need to do it outside though, the contact cement is pretty strong smelling.

I am wanting to reupholster my interior but not sure where to get fabric. Where do most of you guys get yours from? Local shops or what?

Well in CT we have Joanne fabric, I know some Walmarts carry fabric as well but ours stopped for some reason. I have been trying to find places online but haven't come up with anything

Personally, I would reupholster.... it opens up so many more doors and looks great! I did mine to match my leather seats.... Black pillars, black roof with a center stripe of blue...

Any fabric shop, big one... They normally stock actual headliner fabric, in addition to tons of fabrics that you can use instead, from suedes to velours...

I guess I wil have to do some digging. Surely we have a fab shop somewhere around here. I would love to feel the fabric before I buy haha.

No the headliner is fabric on foam and if you sand it you will destroy it. It is not that thick.
If you want the smooth finish for your headliner then wait for the Scionpro Carbon Fiber Headliner to come out in a few weeks. Saves you from having to do any paint or upholstery work. Also never have to worry about the headliner sagging if you use the wrong adhesive for the fabric.

If you were considering the one out there that has been posted up in my thread about this, it will be considerably less than that, better quality and better fit.
I can not give a certain price just yet because I do not want to over or under estimate the price. I can tell you Kevlar will be considerably more money than the carbon fiber.

Is it possible to upholster pieces of the interior like Lexus and BMW's do?
Kinda like this:

See how on the side of the dash left of the steering wheel is upholstered? I'd like to do something like that but wondering how.

With enough money, anything is possible.
All it takes is someone really good at it to make it custom.

At most better fabric stores, there is headliner fabric. You could use that.
Also, you could get something that looks to have a similar texture and weave to the original gray fabric, only in black.
Personally, I'd get a simple black twill weave. I'm not a fan of the felted look stock. I think it just looks cheap.
