View Full Version : My Rubbing Issue

Alright so I looked up the offset of my wheels and everything. +40 offset.

According to the chart that someone posted on the scion wheel guide in shoes and rubbers, my setup is in the >2% error section, which is the worst on the list lol.

My wheels are 18x8 +40mm offset
My tires are 235/40.

Ultimately I should have gone with a 225 tire instead and I probably wouldn't be having as much issue.

I'm just wondering how much rub I am getting here. Anyway to measure it out without actually having the weight in the car? The only time it rubs in the rear is when enough weight is in the back to bring it down, which makes me assume it's hitting the fender lip as you all have heard me say now a million times.

If the lip is the problem, it can't be hitting much because I've not noticed any kind of marks on my tires and the sound it made when it rubbed wasn't that loud. Sounded really fast as if it was barely hitting the sidewall.

As soon as I get my wheels back on for summer, we are going to fix this and I'll drop it, I promise ;)

Without suspension setup details I can't really attempt to tell how much rub there is. If there's no cuts in the tire I find it difficult to believe you're rubbing on the fender lip. If anything it would be the plastic/rubber fenderliner. 18x8 +40 offset is still tucking wheel and tire. Now throw on some spacers, or get a wider wheel and more aggressive offset(in the teens perhaps) then you can talk about getting the fenders rolled and camber.

He's running stock stiffies... for now.

I have 18x8 +35 with 225/40 tires and mine don't look like they will tuck once I'm dropped.

Not everyone uses their car the same so it makes it difficult to make suggestions on what to do and also any suspension mods done or planned. If one decides to run on springs and carries things in the hatch or car pools then you gotta take steps to prevent on rubbing. His specific issue is the rear and that's what I've been searching about on. I don't know how low anyone plans to lower their car either. Tire size makes a BIG difference on rubbing and if you plan to run 18x8 +35 you might have to roll fenders(depending on tire size and have a drop on S-tech Springs or similar). I've been searching on this at scionlife. But to rub with 18x8 +40 on stock springs has to be a good bit of weight you're carrying.

Edit: Roll fenders and call it a day. I'm on 18x7.5 +42 with 225/40 and on TRD springs. It may look like it's close to touching but no issues.

TRD is one of the least drops around. Josh is either going sportline, S-Tech, or coils, right? RIGHT?

If you use some lotion, there's not much of a problem while rubbing. Oh... wait... what are we talking about here anyway?

DeadCannon

I've heard if rub too much you'll start to lose stiffness.

I'm glad you posted this, because i'm actually having the same issues with my car rubbing. I've got 18's- i dont know the dimensions or anything, and tires (they were on it when i got the car) and the car is lowered a little bit- I usually only rub if i've got someone (even just a passenger) in my car...it's not leaving marks on the tires at all, it just sounds horrible. help?!

have either of you checked the inner fenders for rub marks to see where its hitting?

DeadCannon
02-15-2010, 03:01 PM
I'm not rubbing mine so far, but it's probably because I don't have Josh's monster in my trunk. We know Josh's Konigs poke out just a little, so it's probably the outside, unless it's rubbing against the suspension.

Trisha, when you get a chance look at the sidewall of your tires and see if the tire dimensions are listed. should look like this.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj11/DeadCannon/0c1f961f.jpgI've been told mine are pretty meaty for 18x8" rims

pretty standard size for an 18. thats what i had on my tc with hotchkis and it rubbed like crazy in the front but not the back. i was running 18x7.5 though. you wouldnt think that 1/2" would cause that much of a problem.

DeadCannon

I was looking at 18x8.5s for Ashleys B and was told to get 215/35 for those.

thats a stretch. 225/35 or 40 would be better.

I ran a 215/35 on my B and had 18x7.5s (I think....too much damn pot blurs my memory)

chris is on 215/35's with an 8" wide wheel and hes got some stretch. 8.5" might be pushing it unless your goin for that super stretched look.

crex149
02-16-2010, 02:18 AM
215/35's on 18x8.5 would more than likely be stretched so far they would have a tough time setting the bead to the rim. Mine are 215x35's on 8" wide rims like Houston said, and without the rim gaurds on my tires, I wouldn't have any lips left on my rims. The next time I buy tires I'm going to step up to at least 225/40's.

<< My avatar shows a pretty good veiw of the stretch on my rims.

just do a 225/35 next time. i think the sidewall looks too big on 40's.

crex149
02-16-2010, 03:20 AM
That's kind of what I was thinking about doing. 40's do look a little bit big, but 225/35's are harder to find in a decent price range usually.

Wow this thread really took off. I can't wait for spring to get here so I can actually look in the wheel well with the wheels mounted to see what's going on.

Where I am? In the back when you have weight in it? Or on the front when you turn?

DeadCannon
03-05-2010, 10:36 PM
Front passenger side when I leave work. I've heard it a couple times. I turn and come down out of the drive way and you can hear it when the suspension come down. I haven't checked where on the tire yet though.

Kid Morbid

You think it's rubbing inside or the fender? I am surprised you're rubbing there honestly. I've never heard mine do it in the front and my tires are bigger than yours. Maybe mine are just more flush outside than yours idk.

If I knew it wasn't going to snow and get nasty anymore I'd go ahead and put my wheels back on for the summer.. It's suppose to be in the 50's this week. I may go ahead and do it my next day off.. Hmm.

DeadCannon

It thought we had the same. 225/40 on 18x8

I think he has a different offset than you.

I've got 235/40. And yeah the offset is probably different. I've got 40mm offset.

Yay tire rub!

Anyone know how to roll fenders? 16x8 +0 with 205/45 tires = tire ruuuuuuuub. Need halp!
