i have a friend who owes me a favor, he has a turbo 4cyl motor from an old box style mustang. i might ask him for the turbo setup off the motor. i know all the small parts wont work, so ill sell those for a few bucks, but will the turbine itself be ok to use on a tc?

the mustang engine was a 2.3, and the tc being a 2.4, i figured this might be a good match, but i dont know any intricate details on choosing a turbo. i was planning on piecing a kit together anyway, and if i can get a free turbine, thats one of the most expensive parts taken care of.

will it work? what should i be looking for in a turbo?

To be honest, you can put any turbo on your car. I could put a semi turbo on a tC. It won't make boost, but you can do it. I am guessing the question you are asking is if it will be efficient at generating boost or not.

If you are going to use a different turbo, you need to get the turbo's model and find a compressor map for that turbo. Once you have the map, you need to chart the efficiency of the turbo to see where the efficiency line lies in the map. This will tell you whether it is a good idea to use that turbo or not. If you get the model of the turbo, I can do a map online.

To be completely honest with you, the turbo itself is actually a relitively inexpensive part of a turbo setup on your car. People don't want to believe it, but custom turbo setups on the tC often end up costing more than a simple kit. Your major costs are going to be in the custom fabrication of the exhaust manifold, downpipe, and intercooler piping. Not to mention the cost of the engine management, injectors, wastegate, blow off valve, etc. Unless you are a welder/fabricator, you are going to be MUCH better off and save money by buying a pre-assembled kit. Not to mention, you'll have support and know that you have everything you need for the install instead of getting nickle and dimed to death.

I've gone the route of getting a basic kit and adding my own custom stuff to it and even then, it ended up costing A LOT more than if I would have just bought everything together. However, I had done my research and what I wanted to for my car wasn't produced by a company so I had to make my own setup to meet my needs. I didn't do it to save money.
