Hey guys,

So I woke up this morning with what I thought was a really good idea. My plan is to wire my red underbody lights so that they turn on whenever I unlock my car with my LED dome lights, and then turn off with the dome lights too. Does anyone have any info for how I would be able to do this? Is there any wiring besides the dome lights that I could tap into?

Thanks for any help you can give me, I'm gonna go prod around with a multimeter while I wait for a reply :O

ok to do what you want to do i would bring a seperate power line in from the battery. and use a relay to to send the power to the underbody kit while using the dome light as a trigger for the relay. that way you aren't drawing power from the dome light line and risk blowing something.

For starters what kind of LED kit do you have? Is it a basic one color kit or do you have a controller, etc.

i actually wanted to do this same thing but with the interior glow so the inside illuminates even more with the underdash/seats/vents/overhead LED or cathod kits

I think this would be a good project to do. I know somehow you're going to have to tap into the dome light wiring. Perhaps utilize a dummy bulb from Oznium.com and run the wires along the headliner and down the A-pillar where you can connect it with the underbody lighting wiring.

I did something like this for a key ignition light project for my xD.

I used the T-tap source from the illuminated scion door sills. All I did was look up the install PDF on TRD Sparks and found the power source.

Haha so a couple days and a few blown fuses later this is starting to sound like a good idea lol. So I grabbed my multimeter and noticed the dome light bulbs spit out 12v which is perfect for my underbody lights, (the lights have a controller etc. but as soon as they get power they turn on and go to red, which is what i'm wanting). I got an extra dummy bulb from oznium, soldered on some extra wires and hooked them up. Although the voltage works apparently the underbody lights draw too much current because I smelled burnt plastic soon after and now one of my dome light bulb sockets doesn't work :O

Forgive me for being an electricity rookie, but how do I wire the dome light as a trigger for a relay? This sounds like it would be perfect, because I already have a direct line from the battery for the lights, and I'd love to do this.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, I'm really hoping I can get this working.

Ahhh, thank you so much, this will be a much better source to tap into so that I dont have to run wires down the headliner. Although I think my entire underbody kit would draw too much current without having another power source, I'm thinking I will use this idea in combination with Jaspers idea of making these trigger a relay.

So, my final question is how to wire this power source as a relay? I'm going to do some research online but I'd love some help with this, Thanks again for the replies so far :)

Relay wiring (i always use Bosch little more pricey but never had one go bad)

12v--> _ (87)
(86)12v-->| |<--negative trigger(85)

|<--Output to UB kit(30)
**87a is left untouched**

I can draw it better or wire up a relay and take a pic if you'd like when I get a minute and have a relay next to me. Hope that helps

Here is something I used to tap into the dome lights. I used this when installing the led interior lights to turn on when unlock. Though the blue wire in the pic is the ground, though on the tC atleast mine, the blue wire is located in the wire loom with a large plug adapter, you wont miss it is closest to left side. Best thing to use is a t-tap for it. the red wire is power and that you will have to do yourself, there is no wire there, just a spot for one. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll go pick up a relay from radio shack tomorrow and wire it up. I'll let you know if I have any trouble.
Thanks again,
Stephen

with this set up wont he only be able to turn the lights on if the door is open? something to consider is to be able to have the lights still function off a switch or something, if your cruising into a show or meet you might want your lights on, but not the dome light....

tapping a door pin would prolly be the simplest place to trigger the relay...
