it might but it wouldn't be legal, thats been one of the issues, states that do the inspections would check all of that, and you'd be required to let them know you swapped it, if you have a 2004 model car, you can't swap the motor from a 2000 into it, not and be legal, I've been waiting for someone to do a swap into one but no one has
now the question on legality (and I'm not sure if anyone has asked) but is it legal to swap in a CRATE (new) engine from an older car? if so then you can find some really hot, nasty powerful older toyota motors that would fit that bay

Wow, that has to suck, here in Florida they could care less about inspections. But to perhaps answer your question about new blocks. Crate motors are not stamped with vins, just numbers that identify them as new to this year, so I guess if you wanted to be tricky your could get a crate motor for let say a 22RE and throw it into your box, none the wiser ...
Personally though, RWD engine in our boxes may not be the best idea unless you are building a chassis for it, our coke can front ends could not handle the torque produced by performance engines.

Not that it doesn't exist, but I've never lived in an area that inspected for different engines. Most inspections are emissions and safety; i.e. smog test, broken glass, broken/non-functioning lights, seatbelts, etc. Even when I was in Germany, where all vehicles are inspected by the TUV (which is more stringent than ANY US inspection), they never matched engine numbers.

The motor per CA law is from a car same year or newer

Actually, yes, but never had anything custom on my car at that time. I just remember them walking around it, doing the lights, horns, seatbelts and sticking the probe in the exhaust.

yea, cali is why I brought that up, cause cali inspectors on custom cars are the hitlers of the car world
and I'd love to shoehorn the ae86 corrolla's suspension, motor, tranny, and AWD setup into one

i know it probably doesnt matter but i got this info from www.dmv.org (http://www.dmv.org)
This is for the state of connecticut-
Building your own hot rod or chopper? Remember, if you want to ever drive your custom-built vehicle, you're going to need to register it. Connecticut allows registration of custom-built/composite vehicles, but the vehicle must first pass a special inspection process. Before You Start Building
If you've used parts from other vehicles to build your own, you need to make sure you have title certificates for each vehicle used for component parts, as well as receipts for all parts used. If any parts are from used vehicles, you need to include VIN numbers on each receipt.
To get a registration, you're going to have to submit your vehicle to a detailed inspection process, during which time you are required to show all receipts and titles. No receipts means no inspection and no registration.
Ready for Inspection
When you're ready for the vehicle to be registered and inspected, you need to do the following:
Use the Department of Motor Vehicles telephone center (http://www.dmv.org/loading-page.php?mainnav_id=52&stateid=7&state=Connecticut§ion=Custom+Built+Car+Registration&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ct.gov%2Fdmv%2Fcwp%2Fview.asp %3Fa%3D803%26q%3D244574) to make an appointment for a composite vehicle inspection. Composite inspections are done at the Wethersfield office (http://www.dmv.org/loading-page.php?mainnav_id=52&stateid=7&state=Connecticut§ion=Custom+Built+Car+Registration&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ct.gov%2Fdmv%2Fcwp%2Fview.asp %3Fa%3D808%26q%3D244616) only by appointment.
Transfer the vehicle by flat-bed truck or trailer to the inspection station. You cannot drive or tow the vehicle. None of its wheels can touch the ground until it passes inspection and you are granted a registration.
Complete an application for composite inspection (http://www.dmv.org/loading-page.php?mainnav_id=52&stateid=7&state=Connecticut§ion=Custom+Built+Car+Registration&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ct.gov%2Fdmv%2FLIB%2Fdmv%2F20 %2F29%2FR-95.pdf) and bring it to the DMV inspection station, along with two photos of the vehicle and all supporting documents―including titles and receipts for all major parts. The inspection fee is $88 and the VIN costs another $50.
If your vehicle passes inspection, the DMV inspector will assign a VIN to your vehicle, which will allow you to begin the standard process of applying for a registration (http://www.dmv.org/ct-connecticut/car-registration.php) and title. If you fail, you can ask for a re-inspection without going through the appointment process.
You're also going to have to submit your vehicle for an emissions exam. Some vehicles are exempt from emissions testing (http://www.dmv.org/loading-page.php?mainnav_id=52&stateid=7&state=Connecticut§ion=Custom+Built+Car+Registration&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ctemissions.com%2Fexempt.html ). Until January 2007, any composite vehicle that is not exempt must pass standard state emission testing. After new rules go into effect in January 2007, composite vehicles will have to meet specific standards.

I don't know what 2000 model Celica you're talking about, but they've all been FWD in that generation as far as Toyota has made them. And I'm sorry, but you bought a car with a small engine... GET OVER IT!!! I'm sure for the money you're spending for the engine, you probably could have gotten a car that was SUPPOSED to have that engine in it so you wouldn't have to worry about compatibility.

"It's not what you buy, it's what you build". Anyone with the money can buy a fast car. Not everyone has the balls to take a "slow" car and make it fast.
Perfect example, http://www.daveyugo.com/ Pretty sure no one in the world thought a Yugo would run 14s or win it's class in AutoX'ing, but that didn't stop Dave from getting it done. Some people actually enjoy the challenge of doing what Average Joe wouldn't do, that's what makes everyone different.

Silver bullet knows what I'm talking about. The challenge, the questions, the options. I love the Xb and thought instead of tons of upgrades which would amount (if I'm lucky) 180hspw and have something I couldn't drive everyday. When I could have the power and drive it everyday w/ an engine swap. (if I found a engine that didn't need alot of work to make it fit) Don't you think I get enough shit from everyone else just owning a Xb, let alone talking about making them faster? Typical TC owner, you should have got a 04 STi and a turbo FAG!
