Well I know a lot of people are strapped for cash these days (as am I) and we all like to keep our xBs and bBs looking quite stylish with a "personal touch" but most of the time it costs a pretty penny! So I wanted to start this thread for people who needed ideas or just a start on some cheap/little mods they can do and it is an easy thread to look at.

So I guess the criteria can be as follows:

-Well I think a good amount of money should be around 100$ or so but the cheaper the better!

-DIY articles and or links are prolly gonna be most of this thread so yea they are encouraged

-Mods can be little or big!

I am finding out that there has GOT to be a lot more of mods you can do to your car without spending a fortune!

A great mod i did for $17 was change out the sway bar links on my xb....the ride difference is so much better and feels so much more secure in the front now....the stock links look like worn out mini flap jacks compared to energy links lol....

you can pick these up at auto zone and grade 8 bolts and nuts at home depot

i seriously recommend this especially if you are dropped

Good info!@

Another mod that isn't too costly is cover your headliner.. I did mine with black leather from walmart and a couple cans of spray glue!@

Get a piece of aluminum tubing from lowes/home depot about 4 feet long and about 1" in diameter. Then measure the distance between your rear shock bolts in the trunk and cut the pipe to the right length. Then pinch the ends, drill the holes and instant/cheap rear strut tower brace :)
P.S. this can also be done for the front and you can paint them whatever color you want :)

ok ok ok im not 2 good with DIYs, i hope it hepls

1. Get a 1 1/2" or 2" hinge from your hardware store
2. get 4 srews (if you like i use 2 screws and 2 large rivets)
3.take your hood off the and place the hinge on the(right or left side its your choice) the holes of the hinge should mach the stock hole on the hood if not make the holes bigger or new holes. as you see the rivets are on the hood side and the srews on the stock hinge tray to get flat head srews

http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu273/el_bori_xb/SunFeb14122052EST2010.jpg
4.put the hood back, i think you will be ready to go... her some pics after is done. like i said im not 2 good with DIY

here's a few i can think of:

1. Take apart your speedo and little directional area, scan it into photoshop, edit it however you'd like. Goto kinko's and have it printed out on a transparency, cut it out lay over existing pieces, put back together and bingo.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y154/xdeaddandelionsx/Picture040.jpghttp://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y154/xdeaddandelionsx/Picture044.jpg

2. Goto a sign/graphics store and ask for any scrap remnants of vinyl and make a set of eyelids.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y154/xdeaddandelionsx/jj-1_jpg.jpg

3. Goto a tint shop and ask for scrap tint and tint your side markers, buy some leds $3 so that you don't lose any light output.

4. Take off the rear wiper arm and replace with either a 1'' chrome hole plug from lowe's/home depot $1 or leave the motor in and find something you like drill a hole in the back get a rubber grommit with nut $.15, cut the nut out, slide over wiper motor spindle and slide new item over that. Plus when people ride your ass you can let them know "No means no" you can also invert the windshield washer and give them a little tinkle if you feel fit :muahaha:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y154/xdeaddandelionsx/Picture223-1.jpg

5. Totally hack apart your a/c knobs for the piece that slides over the plastic axle we'll say, find something cool that isn't going to hit each other when turning the controls, drill a hole in the items, epoxy the a/c piece into the hole, but make sure your going to have clearance for the center dash piece, maybe a few small spacers may help. Find your self a transparent dvd case and use a hole saw to cut out new backings for your custom a/c knobs. (I used an xbox 360 case since it's the only green one I could find, but i've seen blue, red, smoke, clear, and probally more colors available at electronics stores.) While your dash is apart might as well change the instrument cluster lights to leds $4 for two.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y154/xdeaddandelionsx/Picture049.jpg

6. Ground wire kit, buy 8' of 8gauge wire from lowe's/home depot $5.75 (lowe's had more color options) and ring terminals and heat shrink $4. Cut the wires to length before hand (passenger's strut tower to engine block, block to last coil pack, form last pack to neg. side of battery, from neg to driver's strut tower) make all your connections and enjoy a better grounded system.

7. Wire loom!

I know I will think of some more as the time goes on.:mj:

for you stock interior owners, spray paint for all your plastic interior needs paints only like a few bucks; i painted my console were the radio goes and my shift ring on my 05 xb, painted them black. you can see the dash, but i dont have a picture of the shift ring painted. also covered my front pillars in black pleather for less than 5 bucks
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j85/str8crazy80/2010snowandsciondegras288edit.jpg

also changed out my auto shift blub from a dingy dark color to a bright white led for about 6 bux i think

When you painted your dash what kind of paint did you use? will it ever fade in the sun or bubble from the sun? I'm wanting to paint my dash too but i'm too scared it will look crappy after a while. is there a certain brand that you used that you would prefer? and after did you put any gloss over it? sorry so many questions i'm just curious.,:dontknow:

^ Many people use basic spray paint made for plastics. Best results will always come from automotive paint with a few layers of clear coat.

There's always a ton of inexpensive interior lighting, if you can solder decently. I think all of this cost me about $200 ($135 + tax, shipping, and wiring supplies).
http://www.scikotics.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=1406&pictureid=11042
Let's see...
customxbguages.com
LED lock knobs - $30 for a set of 4 - a supreme pain in the butt to install, but look so cool when done correctly.

oznium.com
OEM LED rocker switch - $12 each - Seems a little steep at first, but looks stock and fits exactly in the plugs under the AC controls.
Superflux chips - $3 each - 1 in each vent, 1 in each cup holder (they are held in place with clear silicone)
PLCC-2 chips - $.50 each - I think it takes 3 or four to change the color of the guage cluster. This requires very good soldering skills and a lot of patience. Be careful about the color you choose, because white (stock) is the brightest. I'm going to add more LEDs to the cluster to make it brighter.
Cold cathodes - $10 for set of 2 with transformer - I don't recommend pairing these with LEDs, since the colors are never a dead match. Mine are under the dash, lighting the front foot wells.
LED modules - $10 each - I have 1 in each roof handle. Carving the little fins out of the roof handles goes faster with a hot knife (think soldering iron with a blade attached at the end). Since the stock headliner is grey, this actually produces the most light out of all of my other mods. It could also be done cheaper with a strip of LEDs from a good local electronics supplier (the bulbs used on those are PLCC-2s, not the common bullet shaped LEDs).

Miscellaneous suppliers -
Skull shaped cigarette lighter lamp - $5 at Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, they only come in blue, but I managed to replace the bulb with a $2 clearance LED from a local electronics store.
"Pig-tail" or "Add a Circuit" - $10? from AutoZone (basic auto supply store). This is a must for electronic mods. It allows you to add a circuit onto your fuse block without compromising your original wiring.

If you are really interested in interior lighting, I suggest spending a lot of time on Oznium.com. They have a wide variety of products & prices, and a lot of their stuff is pre-wired for 12V systems.
Feel free to PM me if you are interested in doing any of this.

I'm just now getting started on exterior lighting because I don't want to get a bunch of tickets from the overzealous Fresno cops. I've been researching California DMV codes and trying to find the loop holes for legal exterior lighting. There isn't a lot to work with.

Ok soo heres my cheap mod. pix will follow.
1 remove hatch cover
2 buy plexi glass thats about same thickness, very fine sand paper and a very rough sand paper
3 cut plexi to shape of the hatch cover
4 use the sanpaper to haze the plexi and create design
5 place new hatch cover
6(opt.) i havent gotten to this step yet myself but put LED bar behind and wire to the dome so not only do you have a custom hatch cover but a trunk light!
total cost probably 20 dollars have fun

10$ in cabin air filter helps with my seasonal allegies. Filter behind the glove box.

Tailings are easy to pull appart to tint whatever way you want

Remote starter about $150, awesome for winter. Made safety switches from axeman parts to make it manual friendly. So worth it for MN winters.

Debaged the car and clay barred the adhesive. Fill in the the front grill hole with fiberglass or bondo.

Relocate frnt license plate using long stainless steel bolts and large washers. Grill mounted.

20$ walmart fogs.

thank you that is my next plan. im goin to wire them to my dome light which is blue. so that when my hatch is open it will light up the truck b/c as we all know there is no light in the back for the 1st gen. i have the 19" oznium flexible led strip just not the time to take my headliner apart to get to the wires.

Where do you get Plexiglas that cheap?

near my place there is a store called true value. the guys there were real nice i just pulled out the hatch cover and gave it to them and they cut me a piece that was a little bigger than the piece and i just took it home and had a buddy use his jigsaw to cut the round out. it was like $5 plus the cost of sandpaper and masking tape.

thanks. just a heads up i went and bought some velcro and i cut tiny little strips and after driving with it for a while itll squeak so what you do is find where the plexi rubs on the metal and stick a small strip of the soft side of the velcro there so it wont squeak anymore. it was bad for a while cuz i didnt have the time to mess with it. and then one day i just got fed up with the sound of the squeak so i fixed it and now its silent. so just a heads up. and another note. if you decide to stratch any wording into it. i used the backside or the side that will be touching the hatch to scratch into so that the other side facing the observer will be nice and smooth and glossy. so what i had to do was spell scion backwards and inversely so that when held up it read it correctly through the other side or the shiny side as pictured above. its up to you ultimately but i thought it looked alot better this way.

thanks i was wondering about this... i think i heard someone say at a show this year that if you have even used armor-all on the pieces that paint won't stick to it.

If i use a grease remover and also the adhesive promotor should i be fine?

This may be a dumb question but do i need to sand any of the pieces at all?

Ive done interior painting alot. For cost effectiveness rubbing alcohol will work great for a grease and wax remover, my favorite pain is the duplicolor interior paint it seems to actually soak in the plastic if done right. Also i have used the red scotch bright pad to scuff the plastic so the paint would adhere better just somethin i am use to doin. Some plastics have a thin film laid on them to keep stuff from sticking or deteriorating them that why i scuff mine.

Just a little dressup mod here, but it looks good at shows. Get a can of Nevrdull and polish up the a/c lines at the firewall and by the belt, takes about $5 and 30 minutes of your time, but looks a lot better than the dull, dirty lines you see at most shows.

looks awesome is their anything more specific about the hinges i should know before getting them so i dont get the wrong ones? (the nearest lowes/home depot is about 45 min away so i dont wanna get home and find out i got the wrong ones)

any issues with clearance aka fender/side of hood getting scratched?

I can't recall witch one I got 1"1/2 or 2" but I know for sure is not bigger or smaller then that. When the hinge is installed the hood is gonna go up like 1/4" to 1/2",when this happened I just apply presure and push down and it wasn't fully flush but you can't really tell. My hood got scratched just a lil in that corner but nothing too serious.I do recommend to color match the hinge and the hood if you can! (I didn't do it but i wish I had, just for a clean look) I hope it helps

Whats the best way to go about this? I want to paint mine white but don't want it to look cheap?

Is it just Krylon and some clear coat?

Please help... hoping to do this this weekend while i am putting my LED's in

I've had good luck with a Rustoleum Specialty Paint for Plastic, at Home Depot for about $6.

i always like the mobile1 oil cap key cover!
you take the silver cap:
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g249/wncrzyhrs/mobile-1-0w-50.jpg
you cut the sides off so theres only like 1/16th left from the top around the edges, then drill a hole in the center of the cap(i forget the diameter) then cover the key cylinder in your gen 1 xb. it fits exact! and it matches the stock silver dash pieces!
ill look around and see if i have an old pic

well i dont think anyone has done it yet that im aware of but, my husband did his tail lights himself because they do not make aftermarket parts for his car( his has a 2003 saab 9-3 turbo) its very rare. I looked at all different aftermarket tail lights for my xB and didnt really like any so we did our own custom tail lights.

spent around 20.00 at advance auto
1 can of adhesion promotor
1 can of gloss black (or you can do any of your choice)
1 can of gloss clear (top coat)
a few sheets of stickey paper or long roll of tape (walmart)

i bought sheets of sticky tape and cut out a design of my choice i picked "xB". just as long as it fits in your tail light spots. i removed my tail lights and taped up around the tail light not to get it on spots i didnt want painted. i cut out my designs, wiped the tail lights down so they werent dirty and placed the stickers where i wanted them. i used squares on the top and bottom and put the xB logo in the center. spray on the adhesion paint to both tail lights. let dry. followed up by the color of your choice ( i recommend at least 2 or 3 coats, with drying inbetween.) remove the stickers then top it off with the clear coat. let dry. Replace your tail lights and then you have your own custom tail lights that no one else has.

When i tap on the brake pedal my lights glow "xB" its awesome.
Feedback is much appreciated. Good luck to anyone who attempts!

Sweet! I bought some vinyl pre-cut to fit on eBay for $35 I think. Smoked them with the option to remove later if I want. I wish I could have cut a shape into them first like this.

Is this something then that they just tend to "look past"? Had my tail lights tinted for at least 7-8 months now.

Also I talked to a cop last night after witnessing a hit and run and asked about my lights in my Oh Shit handles... He basically said it is open to how the cop interprets it... If they say they are "forward facing lights" you can get in trouble. I was glad to learn this. Not trying to collect traffic tickets here.

Illegal in the state of VA. i had tinted tails. but heres the catch and i think a loophole. basically all they are looking for is that they can read the DOT approval number found on the casing... now if you have an inspector friend then no problem until you hit the streets. the law in VA is as long as you taillights are still visible during the day light at something like a few hundred feet then a cop probably wont pull you. i never got bugged until i had to get my car inspected. dont quote me i am no lawyer but i remember reading that somewhere. gl but i think id rather just buy new taillights than have to pay for a ticket and then have to get to new tails because the ones i have are painted over.

Yeah i have to avoid anymore tickets until June. Long story short i got a speeding ticket on labor day weekend and have to have clean driving record for 6 months and then they will erase it from my record! So I guess I'm just crossing my fingers that my "ticking time bomb" doesn't blow before June!

I had a Camaro in the late 80's while in the Navy stationed in VA. I hated dealing with those vehicle codes! I got a ticket from a local for having a light red plastic cover over my license plate. She said when I turned the corner, "for a few seconds" she couldn't read my plate. Could not wait to leave...

my light bulb went on
I don't have the foglights nor the covers on the bumper and i have been thinking of a way to cover the 2 holes, so i thought of this.

Car looks like this right now.
http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj154/215212223/01d8f7b2.jpg

i have a set of projectors from one of those crappy headlights and was thinking of doing this.
http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj154/215212223/57c00310.jpg

and to cover the rest of the hole, i would make two plastic cut out pieces to fit in the hole and paint them graphite, something like this.
http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj154/215212223/f96a5e8c.jpg

Then put 3000k bulbs in the projectors and use them as foglights.

What yalls think? should i go for it?

I painted my calipers last Fall, but not the drums. I heard it was bad, something about less heat dissapation. But my new rims show the rusty drums off way more now, so I might do it soon anyway.

I have Hella's on my xB by custom brackets someone on another site sold me a few years ago. I'll post photos when my computer is back together after this weekend's move into my GF's place. They use stock locations and only had to notch the grill at the bottom a little.

Ive been fixing up rides for more than 15yrs now and have always painted the drums on every ride I have ever had that was equipped with em. Never had a single issue EVER! If 3 coats of paint and a coat of primer eliminates their ability to dissipate heat....then I guess the design definitely needs to reevaluated...lol. Also had a couple sets powdercoated....never an issue there either.

A pretty cheap way to get tinted lights is to go and buy some panty hose,
any kind will work i got a pack of 6 from dollar general for a dollar
and take your light out and carefully slide it over the light, and cut holes in the back for the light to go in.
I will put pics up tommorow as i will take pics, it looks really nice and you cant even tell its pantyhose and the light goes straight through so you dont gotta worry about those pesky cops, the only down side is you cant spray it directly with a power washer as it will rip it off, what i do is stand back about five feet when cleaning around my lights

I really want to do this the only thing is I have a remote start kill switch up under the hood right behind the grill on the right side one that support beam that goes across between the head lights. My question is that if I put the hinge on the passenger side does the hood sit flush enough, like it would with just the stock setup?
