I posted this a few weeks ago in my chapter area without thinking about the lack-of-exposure that Frankenscion soon pointed out to me, so I thought I would repost the question here...the correct place for such a question to be posted.

:mro:

Has anyone put together any information about the VIN definition on the SCIONS? I know in GM, you could look up what factory they came from and other stuff like that with the VIN number.

It could be neat to see where they were born:doc: and who's is related!

I thought it might be fun to list the codes at let everyone rediscover their rides.

If I remember right, you could tell a lot of info from the VIN with older GM cars.

The plate on the inside of your door only tell you the production date, the 11th number of the VIN is the code for which plant it came from- all Scions come from Japan... as their sales increase, they will begin to make plants here in the USA for them just as they have with all other Toyotas.

they will never be made here in america, and they only allow 150,000 scions to be made a year

Basically, what does each of the numbers mean? Do they have meaning like with GM's?

Here goes ...

The first character in the WMI sequence represents the country where the vehicle was manufactured. Countries like the United States (1 or 4), Canada (2) and Mexico (3) are represented by numbers while other countries such as Germany (W), Italy (Z) and Japan (J) are represented by letters.

The second character refers to the manufacturer. The characters can be either letters or numbers. For example: Jaguar (A), Dodge (B), Chrysler (C), Jeep (J), Buick (4), Cadillac (6) or Saturn (8).

The third character represents the vehicle type or manufacturing division.

The vehicle description section consists of five characters (the 4th to 8th characters) which identify everything from the body style, engine type, and braking system to model, series, restraint system, etc. The 9th character is a VIN accuracy check digit which verifies the previous VIN numbers. It is determined by carrying out a mathematical computation developed by the Department of Transportation (DOT).

The vehicle identification section includes the last eight characters in the VIN number. The numbers identify the model year (10th character) and the assembly plant for the vehicle (11th character). A number or letter may represent the model year. For example: 1998 (W), 2000 (Y), 2007 (7) or 2008 (8).

The 12th to 17th characters are the actual serial number of the vehicle—these last 6 digits make the vehicle unique (think of DNA). It can also help to identify whether the vehicle was the first, the hundredth, or the last vehicle off the manufacturer’s assembly line. This is valuable information for collectors.

Hope this helps ... I needed to practically memorize this as I built my bikes some time ago ... Enjoy ...

WOW, that is really cool!

:thx::thx::thx::thx:

Yes, that is what I was thinking of...and thanks for reconnecting my brain:nurse:...on the very fact that the VIN is part of the whole auto industry! Growing up on GM cars, I have vivid memories of matching engine & VIN 's and finding cool bits of data...BUT I never did this on any other auto!

Thanks a Million!:toast:

I always thought that the 8th digit of the VIN was designated for the engine type?

and do you know what is bad about ur vin number. someone can go to ur car at night look through the window and write down the number and take it to the dealership and make a key. how sad is that. its happen a lot and yet the dealerships have help nothen. if you have to make a key all they ask for is your vin number. that means no paper work or anything. best trick is to cover your vin number with a piece of black tape.
